History of Amarnath

It is believed that when Goddess Parvati asked Lord Shiva about his immortality and the reason behind wearing garland of heads, then Lord Shiva revealed his secret to immortality and the secret of his creation of Universe in a cave, which was difficult to be reached by common people. As a pair of doves heard this conversation, they became Amar. Hence, lakhs of people embark on Amarnath Dham Yatra during Shravan month to seek blessings of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesh to receive the boon of immortality.

Highlights of Amarnath

The major highlight of Amarnath Cave is the ice stalagmite of Shiva Linga form, which grows in size during every season of Shravan, and then gradually wanes after that. It is accompanied by two other ice lingams, which are referred to as Parvati and Ganesh.

As per the religious beliefs, it is also said that the ice lingam grows and shrinks in accordance with the phase of the moon, and thus it reaches its maximum height during the summer festival.

The Amarnath Temple Yatra starts from Skanda Shashti as per Hindu calendar, and it lasts till the purnima of Shravan month, which also marks the festival of Raksha Bandhan. However, the actual journey of devotees starts when they reach the base camp.
