Halcyon Castle In Kovalam
Halcyon Castle, Kovalam also referred to as the Kovalam Palace more often than not by the locals, is a castle converted into a deluxe hotel in Kovalam. One of the few attractions apart from the beaches in this quaint little beach town, Halcyon castle is an imposing structure with a very strong, colonial flavour to the architecture. The architecture is actually an interesting blend of traditional Kerala architecture mixed with the colonial style. Built all the way back in 1932 by M.R. Sri Rama Varma Valiya Koil Thampuran, the consort of Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bai, Halcyon Castle was initially meant to be a summer retreat home for their family. After serving that purpose for a few decades, it was sold to the Kerala government in 1964 who promptly turned it into a luxury hotel. There was a dispute regarding Halcyon Castle when the Kerala Government tried to make it a heritage site but it eventually got sold to the Leela Group and now belongs to the Ravi Pillai Group. The dispute is still not completely resolved, however Halcyon Castle is still open for tourists to visit.
Though there is not much to do for tourists at Halcyon Castle it is an ideal place for those interested in interacting with the history and culture of this area. Another aspect is that it doesn’t take long to visit this attraction. Being fairly near and taking about an hour or so to see properly, Halcyon Castle is the ideal destination for tourists looking to spend an idle afternoon or morning while also learning about the area. The silent stone of Halcyon Castle is a reminder of another era, an ode to the royalties of the past and the influence on colonial rule over the nation, thus making it a very interesting visit.

What is the history of this castle?
Halcyon Caste was built by M.R. Sri Rama Varma Valiya Koil Thampuran in the year 1932. The intention of constructing this palace was to offer a perfect
summer retreat to Maharani Sethu Lekshmi Bai and family. The palace was sold by Valiya Koil Thampuran to the Kerala Government in 1964. After that it was converted into a luxurious hotel. The Indian Tourism Development Corporation was running this hotel but later they sold the palace to a private resort group.
