The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is situated near the beautiful Vembanad Lake.

History of Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary was formally known as the Baker’s Estate and it was a wetland area where Alfred George Baker started to convert the wetland into fertile land and planted mangroves in around 10 acres of the land. Soo, migratory and other birds started to flew to this land and hence the land was converted into a bird sanctuary and is currently taken care of by KTDC (Kerala Tourism Development Corporation).

The major attraction of the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is the local and the migratory birds. One can spot birds like cuckoo, owl, heron, waterfowl, water duck, Siberian cranes, teal, larks, wood beetle, parrots, flycatchers, and many more birds. This place is a heaven for wildlife photographers and nature lovers. The best way to have a look of the birds is through houseboats and motorboats cruises which are available on the lake.

Some of the birds in Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, which you spot are woodpeckers, egrets, cuckoo, waterfowl, Siberian cranes, parrots, and larks.

Kumarakom bird sanctuary timings for all days of the week are from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
