Paragliding in Munnar runs only in dry, steady weather, and in 2026 it has also been shaped by district safety rules. On 14 October 2026 the best-known online listing for Munnar paragliding carried a notice that the activity was temporarily unavailable due to bad weather or government restrictions. Treat any booking as provisional until the operator confirms by phone on the day before.

Three things decide whether you fly:

• Rain alerts close everything. In bad weather the Idukki District Disaster Management Authority suspends all tourism and adventure activities in the district (Onmanorama, 6 Aug 2026). The August ban covering Munnar, Pallivasal and Vagamon was lifted on 10 August 2026 (Onmanorama, 10 Aug 2026), but when heavy rain returned on 21 September 2026 the authorities again ordered adventure tourism centres closed (Kerala Kaumudi, 21 Sep 2026). Wind, low cloud and mist on the ridge also ground flights on otherwise dry days.

• Licensing is being enforced. Kerala requires adventure operators to register with the Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society (KATPS). In February 2026 an Idukki district inquiry found 21 of the 25 adventure centres it checked were running without approval, and the Collector set up an inspection committee (Onmanorama, 26 Feb 2026).

• No Munnar operator is on the accredited list yet. Kerala Tourism's accredited adventure-operator list had no Munnar-based paragliding operator on 14 October 2026. The accredited paragliding operators are in Vagamon (OneAdventure) and Varkala (CanFly, Fly Varkala).

Before you pay anyone, ask for four things. The operator's KATPS registration. The pilot's tandem rating and how many tandem flights they have logged. Proof of third-party insurance. And a written weather policy that promises a free reschedule if the wind or rain grounds you. An operator who dodges any of these is one to skip.

Why Choose Paragliding in Munnar?

Paragliding in Munnar combines the thrill of flying with a view you cannot get from any road. From the air the tea estates turn into a green grid cut by estate roads, the Muthirapuzha river shows up as a silver line, and on a clear morning you can pick out the high ridge that runs towards Anamudi, the tallest peak in South India. Flying over the hills gives you a completely different perspective of Munnar.

Commercial tandem paragliding in Munnar runs from one main site, not the long list you'll find on some websites.

Chithirapuram take-off

Chithirapuram is about 10 km from Munnar town on the Pallivasal side. The take-off area is a grassy hillside surrounded by tea plantations. You glide out over the estates and the winding road below, and the flights are short, which makes this site ideal for beginners. Most operators pick you up from your Munnar hotel and drive you up, so it works well for travellers staying in central Munnar.

Landing near the College of Engineering Munnar

Flights come down on open ground near the College of Engineering Munnar. The field is flat and wide, and your pickup vehicle meets you there. Plan on about an hour for the whole outing, from hotel pickup to drop-back.

What about Attukal, Echo Point, Meesapulimala and Pallivasal?

Attukal is a waterfall and viewpoint about 9 km from town, not an operating take-off point. Echo Point is a lakeside viewpoint and Pothamedu is a viewpoint over the coffee and tea slopes. Meesapulimala is a trekking peak run by the Kerala Forest Development Corporation, and you can book the Meesapulimala trek separately. Local pilots do test ridges around Pallivasal, but we found no regular commercial flights there. If someone offers you a flight from any of these, ask exactly where you will take off and land before you pay.

How a Munnar Paragliding Flight Works

From pickup to landing, a Munnar paragliding outing follows six steps:

1. Confirm the slot. Your operator calls the evening before or early that morning to confirm the wind. Morning slots are the most reliable.

2. Pickup. You are collected from your Munnar hotel, or you report at the Chithirapuram launch field at the time you were given.

3. Weigh-in and consent. You show photo ID, get weighed and sign a consent form. Anyone outside the weight band is turned away at this point.

4. Briefing and kit. A five-minute safety talk covers the take-off run and landing position. Then you are fitted with a helmet and harness and clipped to the pilot.

5. Take-off and flight. You run a few steps downhill with the pilot until the glider lifts you. You then spend 8 to 10 minutes in the air over the estates.

Best Time to Go Paragliding in Munnar

The best time for paragliding in Munnar is October to March, and December to February gives the steadiest flying weather. The skies are usually clear, the air is cool, and the wind is predictable enough for pilots to fly most mornings. These are the same months Kerala Tourism recommends for paragliding in Vagamon, the state's main flying site (Kerala Tourism).

September and April to May are possible but less reliable. September often carries leftover monsoon cloud, and pre-monsoon thundershowers build most afternoons in April and May, so fly early if you go then. Do not plan a flight between June and August. Munnar gets heavy rain, the wind becomes unpredictable, the ground gets slippery, and operators stop flying. District rain bans also fall in these months.

The listed flying window is 7:30 AM to 5:50 PM, but the best time of day is usually between 9 AM and 4 PM. In the early morning, the air is calm and smooth, and the sunlight is soft. Late afternoon brings good light over the hills. Midday flights are possible too, but the sun is stronger and the thermals are more active, so the ride is bumpier. Safety, Equipment and What to Wear

Every flight in Munnar is a tandem flight, where a pilot controls the glider while you enjoy the ride. Before take-off the pilot gives you a short briefing about the take-off run, sitting back in the harness and your landing position. You will be given a helmet and harness, and you are clipped to the pilot's glider for the whole flight.

The leading Munnar listing accepts flyers aged 6 to 84 who weigh between 20 and 95 kg. Some pilots, and Kerala Tourism's guidance for Vagamon, set 14 as the minimum age, so confirm the rule with your operator before promising a young child a flight. If you are close to either weight limit, tell the operator when you book, because you will be weighed on the field.

Who should not fly

Skip paragliding if you are pregnant, have a heart condition, high blood pressure, epilepsy, a spine or back injury, or have had surgery in the last few months. Don't fly after drinking. If you have a strong fear of heights, try a short look from the take-off ridge first. There is no shame in watching from the ground.

Paragliding vs Parasailing ('Parachute Ride') in Munnar

A 'parachute ride' in Munnar almost always means parasailing, which is a different activity from paragliding. In paragliding you run off a hillside with a certified tandem pilot. There is no engine and no tow line, and you get 8 to 10 minutes of free flight over the tea estates.

Parasailing in Munnar takes place over the reservoir at Mattupetty Dam. A speedboat tows you up on a line while you sit in a harness under a canopy, and you stay tethered for the whole ride, which is shorter than a paragliding flight. It is run by a private operator under a revenue-sharing arrangement with Kerala Hydel Tourism and started around June 2025. In December 2025 a tourist fell into the reservoir during a ride and was rescued (Onmanorama, 18 Dec 2025), so check that the boat carries a rescue crew and that you are given a life jacket.

By Air:

The nearest airport to Munnar is Cochin International Airport (COK), which is located about 100 to 125 km away. The drive from the airport to Munnar usually takes around 2.5 to 3.5 hours, depending on the traffic and weather. Once you land at the airport, you can hire a taxi directly from the airport or book your transfer in advance through your tour operator or travel agency. By Train:

The nearest railway station is Ernakulam Junction, about 125 to 130 km (3.5 to 4 hours by road) from Munnar. After you arrive at the station, you can hire a taxi or take a private cab to reach Munnar. There are also state-run and private buses available from Ernakulam to Munnar, but a taxi is more comfortable and quicker.

By Road / From Munnar Town:

If you are already staying in Munnar town, reaching the launch site is easy. Chithirapuram is about 10 km away, roughly 25 to 30 minutes by car, jeep or taxi on the Pallivasal road. Many operators offer hotel pick-up and drop-off, so you don't have to find the way yourself. Check with your operator whether this is included.

Before you head out for your flight, always confirm the exact take-off point and your pickup time with your operator. Munnar's roads are hilly and winding, so keep some extra time for travel, especially if the weather changes. Public buses do not go to the take-off field, so a taxi or private car is the practical option.
