About Dukes Nose in Lonavala
One of the most popular attractions of Lonavala, Dukes Nose is a cliff that has beautiful views and a very interesting story attached to its name. Legend has it that the Duke of Wellington, who lived in the area back then, had a nose that resembled the shape of the cliff. The hooded shape of the cliff, which is nearly 800 foot tall, is also reminiscent of a cobra’s hood, thereby coaxing the locals to also call it by the moniker of Naagphani as well.
Dukes Nose point is not just a picturesque location, with gorgeous views of the Sahyadri Ranges in the Western Ghats, but is also a haven for trekking enthusiasts and for those who like rock climbing. There are plenty of Dukes Nose trek for novices as well as experts here, offering people a chance to commune with nature. The main trek starts from Khandala, and it takes nearly 14 hours to reach the top of the cliff, with a couple of stops in between to recharge your batteries. Even night treks are a very exciting possibility here, which starts from the base of the cliff and covers a little more than 7 kms. Other adventure activities at Dukes Nose include rappelling and ziplining, which are carried out by a handful of agents who offer secure services and great equipment on hire. The costs for Dukes Nose rappelling and ziplining vary from agent to agent, but the range is from INR 1200 to INR 2000 based on the activity.
It is also an ideal spot for picnics, and many locals and tourists spend hours here enjoying the view and the misty weather. There are also camping spots here, where people can spend a couple of nights enjoying their time away from the hustle bustle of life, in the lap of nature. It is a must visit spot for anybody visiting Lonavala, and should definitely be part of your itinerary.
