Purandar Fort, placed 4472 ft above sea level, is located 40 km away from Pune, in the lap of Western Ghats. It is one of the most gorgeous forts in Maharashtra that stands tall against the mountain backdrop of Maharashtra. Purandar Fort is also one of the most scenic spots in Pune and offers beautiful vistas of the small towns and lush green landscape of Maharashtra from its top.

Purandar Fort History

Purandar Fort has a major historical significance attached to it. It is not only famous for being one of the scenic spots in Pune but also holds an importance for being the birthplace of Sambhaji, the son of great Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. According to the historical records, Purandar Fort was constructed during the 11th century under the rule of Yadava dynasty. It is believed that several rulers ( including British and Marathas) of various dynasties ruled the Fort. As per the beliefs of Hindu mythology, the hill on which the fort is seated was brought here from the Himalayas by Hanuman.

In the present time, Purandar Fort is visited by tourists because of its stunning scenery and hiking trails. It is also a perfect spot for a refreshing weekend getaway from the neighbouring cities.

Purandar Fort Trek

Purandar Fort offers blazing hiking trails for all the trekkers and hikers out there. Most of the travelers come here for a trek to experience the stunning vistas of the Wester Ghats. To reach the Tar road, you have to cross the Binni Darwaza. After driving along the road till the base of the fort, walk for 500 metres more to reach the steps. You will reach the Purandeshwar Temple and stay there for a couple of hours.

Remember that Purandar Fort comes under the military area and there are timing restrictions. Make sure to leave the place by 5 pm.
