Rajgad Fort, also known as the Ruling Fort, was one of the iconic structures of the Maratha Empire.

It is located approximately 60 km south-west of Pune and can be easily reached by hiring a taxi. The fort had a different name earlier called Murumbdev. This gigantic fort is sprawled over an area of around 40 kilometers, which made it quite difficult for the enemies to lay siege. The great Maratha ruler, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj made this fort the capital of the Maratha Empire for almost 26 years long. After this time period, the capital was moved to another fort called the Raigarh Fort. Rajgad Fort trek is popular among youngsters of the area and it takes around 2 to 3 hours to reach the top of the fort as it is located at a height of around 1376 m. 

History of Rajgad Fort 

History of Rajgad Fort dates back to Maratha rule. The fort saw many significant times during the Maratha reign, like the birth of Chhatrapati Shivaji's son, the death of his wife, and the many important historical events that took place during his time. Shivaji spent his life at a plethora of forts during his lifetime. But, most of this time has been spent at Fort Rajgad. During a treaty with the Mughals, he had to give away 17 of his forts, but he kept with him 11 forts including this one. Many treasures and indigenous materials were used to construct this magnificent fort.

Architecture of Rajgad Fort

Rajgad Fort in Pune has been built over a hill plateau and the architecture of the fort has been done with utmost wit and artistic skills. There is a central area where the main fort has been built with palaces and courtyards. In the main courtyard, a few temples and a lake has been built which has a lot of importance in the Maratha kingdom. Queen Saibai’s burial place can also be seen within the fort premises. A manmade lake is built which is popular by the name of Padmavathi Lake. There is also a storage room here called Ambher Khana. Along with this, there are a few hidden rooms that can be seen inside the fort which were built for safety purposes.

Trek to Rajgad Fort

Trek to Rajgad Fort, Pune is amongst the most famous treks in Pune. Located at an elevation of 1376 m, it is fun to trek to the top of the Rajgad Fort. The trekking difficulty level is easy to moderate and it takes around 2.5 to 3 hours to complete the trek. Pali or Gunjavane serves as the base village of the Rajgad Fort trek and it is 65 km approx. from Pune. There is not just one but various routes to Rajgad fort:

Gunjavane Route: Gunjavane serves as the base village to Rajgad Fort. This route has a moderate level when it comes to difficulty. It will take you around 2 to 3 hours to trek to the Rajgad fort via this route. It passes through Chor Darwajaa.

Pali Darwaja Route: This is the easiest route to trek to Rajgad Fort and it has an easy level. It is a great option for beginners and it will take around 2 hours to reach the top via this route. 

Camping at Rajgad Fort

Overnight camping is allowed at Rajgad Fort in Pune so that you can explore the fort properly as one day is not enough to completely explore the fort. You can either take shelter inside the various temples in the fort or can camp your own tent anywhere inside the fort. There is no fee or charges to accommodate inside fort at night. 

Food and Stay Options at Rajgad Fort

As people stay at night inside the Rajgad Fort, Pune, there are food and stay options arranged by the local people which also serve as a part of their livelihood. Staying inside Rajgad Fort is absolutely free and you can sleep inside Padmavati Temple or other smaller temples. Also, you can pitch your own tent.
