About Pillar Rocks in Kodaikanal
Pillar Rocks are amongst the most sought after tourist spots of Kodaikanal that command a visited. This tourist attraction stands at a distance of 8 km from the heart of the city and comprises of three vertical granite boulders that stand shoulder to shoulder amidst untouched packets of condensed rainforests. Looming high and piercing the sky, these rocky pillars are unique, visually stunning, and are as tall as 400 feet that add to their magnificence. Locals believe that the rocks embody Lord Ganesha, as their shape resembles that of the Lord’s face. The spot is even termed Pillayar, which means Ganesha in Tamil. Mist and fog play hide and seek with pillars and when fog enshrouds the rocks, it looks ethereal. Between these magnificent Pillar Rocks in Kodaikanal, there is a dark chamber that is called the 'Devil's Kitchen' and also attracts hordes of tourists. The shady woods beneath the shadow of pillar create a perfect picnic spot where tourists, as well as locals, can spend some quality time with their beloved amidst captivating natural settings. Close to Pillar Rocks, there is a beautifully manicured garden where a wide variety of flowers keep blossoming. Tourists looking for some relaxation and calm time will fall in love with this place. The rock pillars have hidden nooks and corners and cavernous chasms that exude an aura of mystery that delights all adventure enthusiasts.
There is a poignant Kodaikanal Pillar Rock history that enhances the charm and value of this spot. Initially, there was an almost 30 feet high cross on the rocks, which doesn’t exist today. The cross was the symbol of love of the British couple David Gelli and Irine Gelli. During their Kodaikanal trip, Irvine slipped into the depths of pillar rocks and died. After some days, David placed a huge wooden cross at the top, only to return a few days later to commit suicide. Following this heartbreaking incident, the cross survived for several years but has fallen now. As the cross doesn’t exist anymore, a majority of tourists don’t know about this historical fact.
