About Pillar Rocks in Kodaikanal

Pillar Rocks are amongst the most sought after tourist spots of Kodaikanal that command a visited. This tourist attraction stands at a distance of 8 km from the heart of the city and comprises of three vertical granite boulders that stand shoulder to shoulder amidst untouched packets of condensed rainforests. Looming high and piercing the sky, these rocky pillars are unique, visually stunning, and are as tall as 400 feet that add to their magnificence. Locals believe that the rocks embody Lord Ganesha, as their shape resembles that of the Lord’s face. The spot is even termed Pillayar, which means Ganesha in Tamil. Mist and fog play hide and seek with pillars and when fog enshrouds the rocks, it looks ethereal.  Between these magnificent Pillar Rocks in Kodaikanal, there is a dark chamber that is called the 'Devil's Kitchen' and also attracts hordes of tourists. The shady woods beneath the shadow of pillar create a perfect picnic spot where tourists, as well as locals, can spend some quality time with their beloved amidst captivating natural settings. Close to Pillar Rocks, there is a beautifully manicured garden where a wide variety of flowers keep blossoming. Tourists looking for some relaxation and calm time will fall in love with this place. The rock pillars have hidden nooks and corners and cavernous chasms that exude an aura of mystery that delights all adventure enthusiasts.

There is a poignant Kodaikanal Pillar Rock history that enhances the charm and value of this spot. Initially, there was an almost 30 feet high cross on the rocks, which doesn’t exist today. The cross was the symbol of love of the British couple David Gelli and Irine Gelli. During their Kodaikanal trip, Irvine slipped into the depths of pillar rocks and died. After some days, David placed a huge wooden cross at the top, only to return a few days later to commit suicide. Following this heartbreaking incident, the cross survived for several years but has fallen now. As the cross doesn’t exist anymore, a majority of tourists don’t know about this historical fact.

Myself and my wife had an excellent trip to Ooty and Kodaikanal. The service of inspire holidays is awesome. Never feel any difficulty from the starting of the trip to end of the trip. I have to mention about the driver, his name is Tamil. He is really good and have lot of patience. Never hesitated to answer whatever we’ve asked. He is really good. Travel triangle also very good in coordinating all the activities in the process. Please go with inspire holidays, I give ratings 5/5 Jyothi Mishra from travel triangle, she is awesome. I refer her as she has good knowledge on all the things she does.

    • Trip to Tamil Nadu

I had a trip to KodaiKanal, Ooty & Coimbatore. Bhargavi from VFM holidays was very helpful. The trip was good but with few hiccups. I did not have idea about which vehicle suits for our needs. Ultimately ended up adjusting ourselves during the trip with the vehicle provided. KodaiKanal accommodation is very good and we enjoyed location and sightseeing etc. Food prepared by them is very good. In Ooty the accommodation is not up to the mark and there are power cuts in two nights during our stay. We did not expect these kind of issues in a tourist place. We thought that toy train tickets will be booked by travel triangle but ended up in missing it as no tickets available for us to get from railway counter also. Next time, I would need to verify all these before planning for a vacation.

One of the biggest disappointments was Kodaikanal Hotel. In PDF shared with us it mentioned Spring Valley Residency but we were given Hotel Spring Valley which is not at all good. Two days we stayed in Kodaikanal we have to face wait outside of hotel to get another hotel confirmation from Customize trip.

I am really impressed by the way trip was organized. Right from landing in Kodaikanal railway station to our return to Bangalore every bit was perfectly aligned with respect to cabs and itinerary. The drivers were polite and were open to do pit stops wherever we need. They were also knowledgable explaining the beauty of Kodaikanal. Overall I felt really relaxed during the trip with zero worries on how to visit places or where to have lunch/dinner. Thumbs up to Travel Triangle and Corporate Hosts Destination.

We had a good time during our Coorg, Ooty, Kodaikanal tour. Tootle tour made a good arrangement. The hotels stay and food was good. the porcupine castle hotel in Coorg has good scenic beauty. Teanest nightingale in Ooty is a small property but the food was good. It was my wife's birthday when we were in Ooty. Caretaker helped to arrange the cake and we could celebrate the birthday. We really enjoyed it.

Traveltriangle and Carlo Travels planned and executed our south India trip in a perfect manner and supported us well throughout the trip. Thanks to them for continuous assistance throughout the whole trip. Big round of applause for our driver Mahadev for his excellent driving skills, punctuality and humbleness. Sightseeing plan was flawless and hotels offered were also good. The Holiday Home Resort in Kodaikanal was very serene and peaceful, we spent a good time there. However, typical south Indian style food concerned us in ooty initially and we managed with good hotels suggested by Mahadev. Thanks to Carlos Travels and traveltriangle. We look forward to availing your services for our future trips...
