Easy and Beginner Manali Treks
First trek, travelling with kids, or short on days? Start here. These stay under about 3,000 m, need no prior experience, and most wrap up in a day or two.
Jogini Waterfall Trek – 1 day, from Rs 1,999
The gentlest way to feel the mountains, this short climb starts at Vashisht, 3 km from Manali, and follows a pine-and-apple trail to a two-tier waterfall at about 2,700 m. Two to three hours up, a picnic by the pool, and you are back for lunch. Good for families and anyone easing in.
Bijli Mahadev Trek – 1 to 2 days, from Rs 2,500
A short forest climb from Chansari village, about 24 km from Kullu, to a Shiva temple ridge at 2,460 m with a 360-degree view of the Kullu and Parvati valleys. The temple's tall staff is said to draw lightning, which locals believe recharges the shrine. Easy grade, big payoff.
Tosh Valley Trek – 2 days, from Rs 3,500
Our signature route, and one you will not find on the big trekking sites. From Kasol you reach Tosh village at 2,400 m in about ninety minutes, then walk on toward the meadows below the Parvati glacier. Riverside cafes, apple orchards and, in winter, snow on the roofs. An easy grade with real character. Pair it with a night in Manali before you start.
Prashar Lake Trek – 2 days, from Rs 3,500
A mellow two-day walk to a round glacial lake at 2,730 m with a three-storey pagoda temple on its bank and views straight across to the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges. Snow-covered December to March, green and open the rest of the year. A favourite weekend beginner trek.
Kheerganga Trek – 2 days, from Rs 3,000
The reward at the top is a natural hot spring at 2,960 m, which is why Kheerganga fills up fast in season. From Barshaini the trail climbs through Parvati Valley forest past Rudra Nag waterfall, roughly 12 km each way. Soak, camp overnight, walk down the next morning. Easy to moderate depending on your pace. Full route notes are in our Manali trekking guide.
Moderate Manali Treks
A few days on the trail, some altitude, and stretches of snow and scree. You want basic fitness and a broken-in pair of trekking shoes, but no technical skill. This is where most Manali trekkers spend their time.
Beas Kund Trek – 3 days, from Rs 6,500
A short, high-value trek to the source of the Beas river, a glacial pool at 3,690 m ringed by Hanuman Tibba, Friendship Peak and Shitidhar. From Solang you camp at Bakarthach meadow, then push to the kund and back. Big mountain views for a three-day outing, which is why it is a classic first high-altitude trek.
Chandrakhani Pass Trek – 4 days, from Rs 8,000
From Rumsu, near Naggar, the trail climbs through deodar and oak forest to a 3,660 m pass, then drops to the isolated village of Malana with its own laws and dialect. You cross remote hamlets and old shepherd routes. A rewarding four-day loop that ends somewhere genuinely unlike the rest of Himachal.
Bhrigu Lake Trek – 4 days, from Rs 8,500
One of the fastest ways to reach a high alpine lake, Bhrigu sits at 4,300 m east of Rohtang, reached from Gulaba. You gain height quickly through open meadows, so it feels tougher than its length suggests. May holds snow on the lake when most other passes are still shut, which makes it a strong early-season pick.
Hampta Pass Trek – 5 days, from Rs 9,500
The trek people mean when they say Manali crossover. You start in the green Kullu valley at Jobra, cross the 4,270 m Hampta Pass, and drop into the bare, moon-like Lahaul on the far side, the scenery flipping in a single day. Most itineraries add the cobalt Chandratal lake by road. Five days, moderate grade, and the single most-searched trek out of Manali.
Deo Tibba Base Camp Trek – 5 days, from Rs 11,000
A meadow-and-glacier walk to the foot of the 6,001 m Deo Tibba peak, camping at Chhika and Seri around 4,480 m. Wildflowers in summer, clear peak views throughout, and far fewer crowds than Hampta. Moderate grade over five days, ideal if you want high scenery without a technical summit.
Sar Pass Trek – 5 days, from Rs 8,500
A snow trek in the true sense, Sar Pass runs from Kasol through Grahan village to a 4,220 m pass you often cross on packed snow, then a long glissade down the far slope. Best in May and June when the snow is firm. Moderate grade, five days, and one of the most fun descents in the Parvati region.
Challenging and Snow Treks in Manali
Long days, high passes above 4,800 m, and stretches that demand real stamina or basic mountaineering. Come with previous high-altitude experience and time to acclimatise. These are the trophies of the Manali roster.
Patalsu Peak Trek – 3 days, from Rs 6,000
A short but steep climb to a 4,470 m summit above Solang, with a sharp final push over rock and snow. You get a full sweep of the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar for a three-day trek. Moderate to challenging because of the gradient near the top, and a good bridge between meadow treks and real expeditions.
Chandratal to Baralacha Trek – 6 days, from Rs 14,000
A high, remote crossing that starts near the Chandra river source at Chandratal lake and ends at Suraj Tal below the 4,890 m Baralacha La. You ford icy streams and stay above 4,000 m for days, so this one is for trekkers with solid experience. The Lahaul-Spiti scenery is as stark and beautiful as the Himalaya gets.
Friendship Peak Expedition – 6 days, from Rs 16,000
An introductory mountaineering climb to a 5,289 m summit near Solang, with crampons, ice axe and rope on the final stretch. No prior summit needed, but you must be fit and ready to learn basic technique from the guides. Six days including acclimatisation. The top gives you Hanuman Tibba, Shitidhar and the Beas Kund bowl at your feet.
Bara Bhangal Trek – 9 days, from Rs 20,000
One of Himachal's toughest classics, linking Manali to the shepherd village of Bara Bhangal over the Kalihani Pass near 4,800 m, then out to Bir over the Thamsar Pass. Nine days through country with no roads and no phone signal, so you need experience and self-sufficiency. For strong trekkers, it is the region's great wilderness traverse.
Pin Parvati Pass Trek – 11 days, from Rs 22,000
The big one. Eleven days from the green Parvati valley over the 5,319 m Pin Parvati Pass into the desert of Spiti, a full crossing of the main Himalayan range. Glacier travel, river crossings and days above 4,500 m mean this is for seasoned trekkers only. Finish it and you have done one of India's most demanding graded treks.
Best Time to Trek in Manali
Trekking season runs roughly late April to early November. The window shifts with altitude and how much snow you want underfoot, so match the month to the grade.
Spring and early summer (April to June)
The most reliable window. Lower and mid treks like Jogini, Prashar, Beas Kund and Chandrakhani open up with clear skies and flowering meadows, while snow treks such as Sar Pass and Bhrigu Lake are at their best because the high passes still hold firm snow. Days are pleasant; nights near the passes still drop below freezing.
Monsoon (July to mid-September)
Rain and landslide risk make the lower forest treks slippery and best avoided. The exception is the high rain-shadow country: Hampta Pass, Chandratal to Baralacha and Pin Parvati stay largely dry because they sit behind the main range, so July to September is actually their prime season.
Autumn (mid-September to early November)
The second clear window. Skies are crisp, trails are quiet, and mid-grade treks reopen with settled weather. After early November heavy snow closes the high passes and only short low-altitude walks remain sensible. Winter itself is for snow sightseeing and skiing rather than trekking.
What's Included, Fitness and What to Pack
Every Manali trekking package here bundles the essentials so you are not chasing logistics at the trailhead.
| Included | Not included |
|---|---|
| Camping or homestay nights on trail | Flights and trains to Manali |
| All meals from the base to the summit and back | Personal gear (boots, backpack, hiking poles) |
| Certified local trek guide and support crew | Travel insurance and evacuation cover |
| Forest and camping permits | Any activity not in the itinerary |
| Ground transfers to and from the trailhead | Tips for the crew and personal expenses |
How fit do I need to be?
Easy day treks suit anyone who walks regularly. Moderate treks want you comfortable on a 5 to 6 km hike with some elevation. Challenging treks and Friendship Peak need months of cardio, a recent high-altitude trip, and full acclimatisation days built into the plan. When in doubt, book a grade down.
What to pack
Layered warm clothing (thermals, fleece, a waterproof shell), broken-in trekking shoes and two to three pairs of socks, gloves, a woollen cap, a headlamp, sunscreen and sunglasses, a refillable water bottle, and a small personal medical kit with any AMS medication your doctor advises. Carry a government photo ID, your phone, camera and chargers, and keep valuables in a dry bag. Eat light and stay hydrated in the days before you start.
Around Manali: Where to Base and What Else to Do
Most treks start within a couple of hours of Manali town, so it makes a natural base. Between climbs, Old Manali's cafes, the cedar-shaded Hadimba temple, the hot springs at Vashisht, and the adventure hub of Solang Valley are all close by, and Rohtang Pass at 3,978 m is a half-day trip when the road is open.
