About Dunagiri in Almora

Dunagiri is a charming place settled in the Himalayan Ranges. The place is famous for historical and religious importance. Many pilgrimages come to the place for spiritual enlightenment and to spend some time in a serene and tranquil atmosphere. The place is also famous for the Dunagiri temple which is devoted to the Goddess Durga. As per mythological belief, a piece of Sanjiwani Buti fell from the hands of Hanuman Ji and the place came to be known as Dunagiri.

History of Dunagiri

The place is surrounded by the rich history, myths, and legends. It is believed that the son of King Dushyanta, Bharatvarsh was born in Dunagiri. One can spot Pandavkholi, it is a place where the five Pandav brothers spent a small portion of their exile. The place has seen many sages, yogis, and rishis who have come here to meditate. The place is also the birthplace of Mahavatar Babaji. Dunagiri is also a place where Kriya Yoga was disclosed by Mahavatar Babaji to Shyamacharan Lahiri.

Activities and Attraction in Dunagiri

One can go for a 3 kilometers trek to Mahavatar Babaji’s cave. The entire route has splendid landscapes comprising of stunning mountains and lush green forests. There is a famous temple of Vaishnavi Mata, located on the Dunagiri mountain. This ancient temple is a place where Bhairavi, the wife of Lord Shiva, turns into Vaishnavi Mata. Visit Pandhavkholi a gorgeous spot for some mesmerizing views comprising of Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Panchachuli peaks. One can even trek to Pandhavkholi and see the lush green forests. In Dunagiri one can visit Sukhdevi Temple and Ashram. The temple offers panoramic views of the Himalayas ranging to 100 kilometers. Explore Gandhi Ashram in a small serene town of Kausani. From the Ashram see the snow-capped Himalayan peaks. Ranikhet and Nainital are also in the near proximity of Dunagiri.

    The first two days of our trip was a total waste of time because of the lousy cab that reported to us one hour after we landed in Dehradun. And after that he has no money to pay the finest as his wheel was locked by the authorities for parking over time . Due to this attitude of the driver ,we were
    delayed for our trip to Rajaji and further that delayed and we missed the ganga Aarti at Haridwar . The next day too the same cab driver was hanging around and we refused to go in that car . PLEASE NOTE- This can was different than the video and photographs of the vehicle that was sent to us before booking the travel agent . Finally Mithila travels agreed to send us a better car and said that we have to pay ₹1500/- per day extra .. When we demanded to cancel our entire trip and asked for refund .. this price was brought down to ₹500/ per day and we had to accept because we were just hanging around Dehradun doing nothing for two days .     Aaryam Resort stay was very good. All arrangements were upto the mark. Food and staff was very good. Hotel Royal Galaxy was not good and was very ordinary. Not as expected based on the hotel pics shown before boking. Bathroom was stinking. No restaurant for food. I dont recommend it. Cab driver
