About Nanda Devi Temple in Almora
Nanda Devi Temple is one of the prime attractions of the hill town of Almora in Uttarakhand, India. The temple is named after the Nanda Devi Peak and Goddess Parvati. The goddess is considered to be the daughter of the Kumaon community, hence, the temple holds a great value amongst the local people of Almora and the Kumaonis everywhere.
Nanda Devi Temple History
The temple is at least 1000 years old and is constructed in a style that is indigenous to the Kumaoni people. The architecture here is splendid that has an antechamber that is situated within a Shiva Temple. Lord Shiva is the goddess’s husband, hence, the temple. Goddess Parvati, also called Nanda Devi, was the patron goddess of the Chand dynasty that ruled the region of Uttarakhand during the medieval times. Because of the many stories and traditions surrounding this, the temple always held great reverence in the heart of the devotees.
Nanda Devi Temple Events
The temple is famous for the festivities and the fairs. Out of the many, there is a special event that takes place every 12 years at Nanda Devi Temple Almora. The Nanda Devi Raj Jat is a celebration that happens on a grand scale. A sheep (goddess Nanda in the form of a sheep) is decorated and adorned with shiny clothing and ornaments along with food. This is how she is sent to Trishul Peak, her home. There are many musical performances, dances, and local folk songs sung during the festival.
