Locals also consider Tapkeshwar Temple to be the most auspicious Lord Shiva temple of Dehradun district.
This story in the Hindu mythology has not just provided the cave with its name, but also the distinct feature of Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple in Dehradun that attracts hordes of devotees from all over the country. Thousands of devotees come to this distinct temple to seek blessings from Lord Shiva, who also listened to the baby version of Ashwathama. The kid was the son of Guru Dronacharya, the guru and guide of the Kauravas and Pandavas clan in the Indian mythological epic, Mahabharata. The story goes like when Ashwathama was born to the guru and his wife, the latter couldn’t properly feed the kid with her breast milk. As the couple were poor and not well-off, they couldn’t afford to buy a cow or even cow’s milk for that matter. The child went hungry and prayed to Lord Shiva to feed him with some cow’s milk. After much praying, Lord Shiva appeared in front of the child in the form of Shivalinga and fed him milk through dripping it from the Shivalinga that is present inside the Drona Cave. Even today, the temple is known for this distinct feature. The water keeps flowing on top of the Shivalinga in the form of droplets at Tapkeshwar Temple in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. This continuous flow of water on the Shivalinga is considered auspicious by many. This is the reason why devotees from all over the country and many even from different parts of the world come here to pay their respects to the lord.
