How to Reach Vietnam from Chennai: Distance, Flights and Visa (2026)

Chennai is the main international airport of South India, and travellers from Puducherry, Vellore and the rest of Tamil Nadu often come here for the wider choice of flights east. Below are the distances to each Vietnamese airport, the airlines and layover cities that work, fares, visa rules and where to land for your itinerary.

Chennai to Vietnam Distance by Air and Road

Vietnam is long and thin, so the answer depends on where you land. Phu Quoc, the island off the southern coast, is the closest Vietnamese airport to Chennai. Nha Trang is the farthest of the five main ones.

We measured air distance as the great-circle distance between Chennai International Airport and each Vietnamese airport, calculated by our Vietnam desk from airport coordinates on 27 October 2026. Total travel time includes a layover of about 2 hours. A badly timed connection can stretch it past 18 hours, so look at the layover before the price. That 5,900 km road figure is the number you'll see quoted on some sites as "the" Chennai to Vietnam distance. It is the driving distance, not the flight.

Vietnam to Chennai and Tamil Nadu to Vietnam Distance

The distance is the same in reverse, 2,869 km from Hanoi to Chennai and 2,890 km from Ho Chi Minh City. Westbound flights often run 20 to 40 minutes longer because they fly into the winds.

Chennai is also the closest Tamil Nadu airport to Vietnam. Tiruchirappalli, Madurai and Coimbatore have international flights too. Tiruchirappalli flies nonstop to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Coimbatore to Singapore and Madurai to Colombo, so from those cities you can connect to Vietnam without coming to Chennai first.

Is There a Direct Flight from Chennai to Vietnam?

No. As of October 2026 no airline flies nonstop from Chennai to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or any other Vietnamese city. Some booking sites label a one-stop itinerary "direct" because the flight number doesn't change at the stop. Tick the "nonstop" filter and read the stops line before you pay.

The nearest nonstops are one short domestic hop away. Bengaluru has eight nonstops a week, four each on Vietnam Airlines to Hanoi and VietJet to Ho Chi Minh City, and Hyderabad has six a week on the same two airlines. Both cities are about an hour from Chennai. IndiGo flies Kolkata to Hanoi, 1,797 km and roughly 3 hours, and you can book Chennai to Hanoi via Kolkata as one IndiGo ticket. Further north, Delhi and Mumbai have daily nonstops to Hanoi.

Chennai to Vietnam Flight Route Map and Stopovers

The shortest line from Chennai to Vietnam runs east across the Bay of Bengal, over Myanmar and Thailand. That's why Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur add the least extra distance, and why they're the most popular stopovers.

Bangkok is usually the fastest connection to Hanoi. Kuala Lumpur gives you the most onward choice, including Da Nang and Phu Quoc, and AirAsia often has the lowest base fare. Singapore suits families who want a full-service airline on both legs. For any route, these rules save trouble:

• Book one ticket where you can, so the airline rebooks you if the first flight runs late.

• On separate tickets, leave at least 3 hours and plan to collect and re-check your bag.

• Indian passport holders staying airside in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on one ticket don't need a transit visa. If you have to leave the airport to re-check a bag, check that country's rules first.

Chennai to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang: Where Should You Land?

Pick the airport that matches the first half of your trip, not the cheapest ticket. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are about 1,150 km apart, and backtracking costs a domestic flight and most of a day.

Land in Hanoi (2,869 km) if your trip is about the north. Ha Long Bay is about 3 hours by road from Noi Bai, Ninh Binh about 2 hours, and Sapa about 5 hours or an overnight train. Land in Ho Chi Minh City (2,890 km) for the Mekong Delta, the Cu Chi Tunnels and a south-to-north route. If you want both ends, book an open-jaw ticket: Chennai to Ho Chi Minh City, then Hanoi back to Chennai. You fly the length of the country once, on a 2-hour domestic hop in the middle.

Da Nang (3,034 km) and Phu Quoc (2,613 km) work best through Kuala Lumpur, which has direct onward flights to both, or with a 1 to 1.5 hour domestic flight from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. Chennai to Vietnam Flight Ticket Price

A one-way economy ticket from Chennai to Vietnam usually costs Rs 12,000 to Rs 23,000 with one stop. December holiday dates go above Rs 25,000.

The cheapest months to fly are usually February and March, and June to September when it's the rainy season across much of Vietnam. Late December is the most expensive. Avoid the Tet (Lunar New Year) week in late January or February as well, since domestic flights and trains inside Vietnam sell out and many shops close. Compare total prices, not base fares. A low-cost fare grows quickly once you add a 20 kg bag, a seat and a meal.

Vietnam Visa for Indians Flying from Chennai

Indian passport holders need a visa for Vietnam, and the e-visa is the simplest way to get one. Apply only on the official Vietnam Immigration e-visa portal, not a reseller site that adds its own fee.

• The e-visa allows stays of up to 90 days, with single or multiple entry.

• It costs US$25 for single entry or US$50 for multiple entry, paid online by card, and the fee is not returned if the application is turned down.

• Processing takes about 3 working days, so apply at least a week before you fly.

• Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the arrival date.

Print the approval. The check-in counter at Chennai, and again at your stopover, will ask for it before issuing the Vietnam boarding pass. Phu Quoc has its own rule: foreigners who fly straight into the island from abroad can stay up to 30 days without a visa, which only helps if your connecting flight lands straight on Phu Quoc, as some do from Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. Before You Fly: Chennai Airport Tips and Airport-to-City Transfers

International flights leave from Chennai Airport's integrated international terminal. Reach it 3 hours before departure, since many Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur departures are late at night and share the same security queues. Carry the printed e-visa, your return ticket and your first hotel booking. A little US dollar cash is easy to change into Vietnamese dong on arrival, and both Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat sell local SIM cards in the arrivals hall.

Noi Bai Airport (HAN) to Hanoi Old Quarter

The Old Quarter is about 30 km from Noi Bai, a 45 to 60 minute drive. Grab cars and airport taxis wait outside the terminal. The cheapest option is city bus 86, which runs to the Old Quarter and Hanoi railway station.

Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN) to Ho Chi Minh City District 1

District 1 is only about 7 km away, 25 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. Use Grab, a metered taxi from the official rank, or bus 109 to Ben Thanh market.

Can You Go from Chennai to Vietnam by Train, Road or Sea?

No. Flying is the only realistic way from Chennai to Vietnam.

By train. India has no rail link to Vietnam, because Myanmar's network doesn't connect to its neighbours. The only international passenger trains into Vietnam come from China, a daily overnight service from Nanning to Hanoi's Gia Lam station that restarted in May 2025. You'd still have to fly from Chennai to China first.

By road. The road distance is about 5,900 km through Northeast India, Myanmar, Thailand and Laos. That is four international borders, each with its own permits and vehicle paperwork, and the conflict in Myanmar makes that stretch unsafe for tourists right now.

By sea. There's no passenger ferry from Chennai to Vietnam. Cruise ships call at Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Ha Long Bay, but those itineraries start from Singapore or Hong Kong, so you'd fly out of Chennai anyway.

Best Time to Fly from Chennai to Vietnam

Fly between October and April for the north, December to April for the south, and February to August for Da Nang and Hoi An.
