How to Reach Vietnam from Kolkata: Distance, Flight and Visa (2026)

Kolkata is the closest Indian metro to Vietnam, and the only airport in East India with a flight there. If you've read that Kolkata flights stop in Bangkok and take 6 or 7 hours, that is out of date. IndiGo has flown Kolkata to Hanoi non-stop since October 2019, and the flight now leaves at lunchtime and lands before 5 pm. Below are the timings, the distance to each Vietnamese airport, fares, the visa and where to land.

Kolkata to Vietnam Distance by City

Vietnam stretches about 1,650 km from north to south, so the distance from Kolkata depends on which airport you fly into. Hanoi is the closest. Nha Trang on the south-central coast is the farthest.

Air distance is the great-circle distance between Kolkata airport and each Vietnamese airport, calculated by our Vietnam desk from airport coordinates on 29 October 2026. One-stop times include the connection.

You'll see "2,300 km" or "2,300 to 3,000 km" quoted online. The first is roughly the Ho Chi Minh City figure, and the second is a country-wide guess. Neither is the distance your Hanoi flight covers.

Vietnam runs on UTC+7, so it is 1 hour 30 minutes ahead of Kolkata all year. That is why a 2 hr 35 min flight leaving at 12:50 lands at 16:55 local time.

How to Reach Vietnam from Kolkata

Fly. Every other option is either indirect or closed to ordinary travellers, so the real choice is which airport to land at and whether to connect inside Vietnam or abroad.

Kolkata to Vietnam Direct Flight: IndiGo to Hanoi

IndiGo is the only airline flying non-stop between Kolkata and Vietnam, and it flies to Hanoi only. Both flights use Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) at the Kolkata end and Noi Bai International Airport at the Hanoi end.

Winter 2026 to 2027 schedule, effective 25 October 2026 and last checked 29 October 2026. Timings change at the end of March. In summer 2026 the same flight left Kolkata at 21:45 and landed at 02:10, so confirm on goindigo.in before you book.

IndiGo also flew Kolkata to Ho Chi Minh City non-stop until mid-2026. It suspended that route on 1 July 2026 and has since dropped it, so guides that still list a Kolkata to Ho Chi Minh City direct flight are out of date. For the south, see the one-stop options below.

Kolkata to Vietnam by Train

There is no train from Kolkata to Vietnam, and no train ticket to buy. India's rail network does not cross into Myanmar, so there is no line heading east. The only international passenger trains into Vietnam come from China, a daily overnight train from Nanning and a twice-weekly train from Beijing, both ending at Gia Lam station in Hanoi. You would have to fly to China first, which takes longer and costs more than flying straight to Hanoi.

Kolkata to Vietnam by Road

On a map, the road route runs about 4,350 km from Kolkata through Assam and Manipur to the Moreh border, then across Myanmar, Thailand and Laos into northern Vietnam. That is 80-plus hours of driving and four international borders. Myanmar's conflict makes that stretch unsafe, and the Moreh to Tamu crossing is not a realistic route for tourists today. If you are already travelling in Laos or Cambodia, though, buses cross into Vietnam every day with the right visa.

Kolkata to Hanoi Flight: Distance, Timings and Arrival

Kolkata to Hanoi is 1,797 km, and 6E1631 covers it in 2 hours 35 minutes on an Airbus A320neo. It is the shortest flight from any Indian metro to Vietnam.

The lunchtime departure is the main thing to plan around. Aim to reach the airport 3 hours before departure, by 9:50 am, to leave time for check-in, the e-visa check at the counter, security and immigration. You land at Noi Bai at 16:55, and after immigration and the 45 to 60 minute drive (about 30 km) you are in the Old Quarter by 7 pm with the evening free. Grab cars and airport taxis wait outside arrivals, and city bus 86 runs to the Old Quarter and Hanoi railway station for a fraction of the price.

IndiGo's fares don't include a meal, and baggage depends on the fare type, so check both before you pay.

Kolkata to Vietnam Flight Route Map and Stopovers

The non-stop route from Kolkata heads east over Bangladesh, Myanmar and northern Laos into Hanoi. For anywhere else in Vietnam, you have two kinds of one-stop route, and the fastest is usually to connect inside Vietnam.

Connecting in Hanoi means you clear Vietnamese immigration at Noi Bai and the second flight is a domestic hop from the domestic terminal next door. If the two flights are on separate tickets, leave at least 3 hours between them, which points you at an onward flight after 8 pm. Thailand is now visa-free for Indians for up to 30 days, so a Bangkok connection on separate tickets is easy, and a night or two in Bangkok on the way costs no visa.

The best plan for a north-to-south trip is an open-jaw ticket. Fly Kolkata to Hanoi, travel down the country, and fly home from Ho Chi Minh City via Bangkok or Hanoi. You cross Vietnam once instead of doubling back the 1,160 km between the two cities.

Kolkata to Vietnam Flight Ticket Price and Cost

A return ticket from Kolkata to Hanoi usually costs Rs 24,900 to Rs 36,700 in economy, and IndiGo's non-stop starts around Rs 26,400 return (Kayak India fare data, checked 29 October 2026). One-way fares start near Rs 13,500 on a Thai AirAsia one-stop via Bangkok.

February is the cheapest month, but avoid the Tet (Lunar New Year) week, which falls on 6 February 2027. Domestic flights inside Vietnam fill up and many shops close for days. December and January cost the most, and the Puja holidays in October push fares up too, so book those dates early. Compare total prices rather than base fares, because a low-cost fare grows quickly once you add a checked bag and a seat.

Vietnam Visa for Travellers from Kolkata

Indian passport holders need a visa for Vietnam, and the e-visa is the simplest way to get one. Apply on the official Vietnam Immigration portal, evisa.gov.vn, not a reseller site that adds its own fee.

• The e-visa allows stays of up to 90 days, with single or multiple entry.

• It costs US$25 for single entry or US$50 for multiple entry, paid online by card.

• Processing takes 3 to 5 working days, so apply at least two weeks before you fly.

• Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you arrive.

• The form asks for your port of entry. Choose Noi Bai (Hanoi) if you're on the IndiGo flight.

Print the approval letter. The IndiGo counter at Kolkata checks it before issuing your boarding pass.

Phu Quoc has its own rule. Foreigners can stay on the island for up to 30 days without a visa if they arrive from abroad, either directly or through Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City on one ticket without leaving the transit area. From East and Northeast India: Fly via Kolkata

No airport in East or Northeast India other than Kolkata has a flight to Vietnam. Imphal is actually closer to Hanoi than Kolkata is, but it has no flights to Southeast Asia, so travellers from Guwahati, Bagdogra, Patna, Bhubaneswar, Ranchi and Imphal connect through Kolkata. Book the domestic leg and 6E1631 on one IndiGo ticket so the airline rebooks you if the first flight runs late, and your bag goes straight through to Hanoi.

So the West Bengal to Vietnam distance is 1,797 km from Kolkata to Hanoi, and closer to 1,875 km if you start from Siliguri and fly out of Bagdogra.

Best Time to Fly from Kolkata to Vietnam

Fly between October and April for Hanoi and the north, December to April for Ho Chi Minh City and the south, and February to August for Da Nang and Hoi An. Hanoi gets cool between December and February, around 15°C to 20°C, so pack a light jacket that a Kolkata winter wouldn't call for.
