How to Choose the Right Sri Lanka Package for Your Group

By group size. Two or three friends fit one car and twin or triple rooms, so any card above works as priced. From four friends up, ask for a van and two or more rooms, and the per-head cost of the vehicle drops. Groups of six to ten can swap hotel rooms for a private villa at Bentota or near Galle. By trip length. Three nights covers Kandy and one beach, with Colombo on the way out. Four nights adds Nuwara Eliya and the tea country. Six nights is the minimum for Sigiriya, a Yala safari and the coast without spending whole days in the car.

How Much Does a Sri Lanka Trip with Friends Cost?

A 4N/5D Sri Lanka trip with friends costs about Rs 36,000 to Rs 47,000 per person from South India, return flights included, on twin sharing. That is the package price plus Rs 12,000 to Rs 20,000 for flights from Chennai, Bengaluru, Kochi or Trichy. From Delhi or Mumbai, add about Rs 10,000 more for the flight.

Where Friends Trips Go in Sri Lanka

Bentota and the south-west coast

This is where most friends packages spend their beach nights. Jet skis, banana boats and wakeboarding run on the calm Bentota River lagoon, and the Budget package bundles the water sports in for free. The Madu River boat ride through mangroves and cinnamon islands is in several packages. Hikkaduwa, about 40 minutes south, adds snorkelling over the reef and bars that stay busy late. Kandy and Kitulgala

Kandy is the stop on almost every route, for the Temple of the Tooth and the walk around Kandy Lake. Friends who want adrenaline add a half day at Kitulgala, where rafts run the Kelani River rapids. Sigiriya and Dambulla

The climb to the top of Sigiriya rock takes about an hour past the frescoes and the Lion's Paws. Go at opening time to beat the heat and the crowd. Nearby Pidurangala gives you the view back at Sigiriya, and Dambulla's cave temple is a short drive. The Trekking package bases you here for two nights. See Sigiriya.

Nuwara Eliya and Ella

Tea country. Nuwara Eliya sits at about 1,870 metres and Ella lower, at about 1,000 metres. Bring a jacket, because nights are cold even when Colombo is at 30°C. The hill-country train from Nanu Oya to Ella takes about three hours and is the ride every group photographs. The Nine Arch Bridge sits just past Ella on the line towards Demodara, so walk out to it from town and time it for a passing train. Little Adam's Peak is an easy two-hour morning walk that pairs well with the bridge, while Ella Rock takes three to four hours return, so give it its own morning. Yala and Mirissa

Yala National Park is where you go for leopards, on a morning jeep safari, and it is built into the 6N/7D adventure package. Mirissa is the base for whale watching boats from November to April. Read more about Yala National Park and whale watching in Mirissa.

Colombo nights

Most trips start or end in Colombo, and it is the best city in Sri Lanka for a night out. Best Time To Visit

The Yala monsoon (south-west monsoon) brings rain to the south and west coast and the hills from May to September. The weaker Maha monsoon (north-east monsoon) brings rain to the east and north from about November to February, and October and November can be wet across most of the island. January to March is a fantastic time to visit the place followed by April, which is usually the hottest month.

How To Reach

By air. Flying is the only practical way to reach Sri Lanka for a holiday. Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi and Hyderabad have direct flights to Colombo's international airport, Bandaranaike International Airport. Most packages on this page are land-only, so you book flights separately or ask your agent to add them. Packages marked "with airfare" include them.

By sea. Cruise ships from Chennai and Mumbai call at Sri Lankan ports, which suits a group that wants the ship to be the party. See Sri Lanka cruise packages. Every other route, including from your city, is in how to reach Sri Lanka.

A passenger ferry also sails from Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu to Kankesanthurai near Jaffna, but it lands in the far north, a long drive from the usual friends routes, so check current sailings before planning around it.

Visa. Indian passport holders need a tourist ETA before flying, applied for online at eta.gov.lk. Since 25 May 2026 it has been free for Indians, valid for 30 days with double entry. Group Travel Tips for Friends

Fix the room sharing before you ask for a quote. "Six friends, two triples" gets you a sharper price than "six people". Mention if anyone needs a single room.

One payer, then split. One friend books and pays, and the rest settle up by UPI. It keeps the booking clean and the agent has one point of contact.

Do not over-pack the route. Hill roads average about 40 km an hour, as one of our travellers found on a packed 3-day trip in November.

Tell the agent about food. Vegetarians eat well in Colombo and Kandy, but options thin out in smaller towns. One of our travellers said finding vegetarian lunches was a daily hunt, so say it up front and the agent will plan meal stops.

Carry some cash, use the SIM. Several packages include a local SIM card, which helps when the group splits up. Keep Sri Lankan rupees for tuk-tuks, tips and small shops.

Watch the menu. On his first morning, Parvez was handed a pricier "tourist menu" at a café near Pinnawala, and his driver took the group somewhere else. Ask for the local menu or let your driver suggest a place.

Get travel insurance. It is not included in the packages. For a group doing rafting, surfing or water sports, it is worth adding before you fly.

Tips For Travelers

Buddha images are treated with real seriousness in Sri Lanka. Visitors with visible Buddha tattoos have been refused entry or deported, so keep them covered, and never pose with your back to a statue.

To travel from one Sri Lankan city to another, take the trains. They are slower than a car on most routes, but the views, especially through the hill country, are the reason to ride. One could customize a Sri Lanka package for friends and include this travel within the package to not miss out.
