Chandratal lake in Spiti

How To Reach Chandratal Lake

Bask in the glory of nature at Chandratal Lake

Rated 4.30/5 ( based on 140 reviews )

Chandratal Lake sits at roughly 4,300 m in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh, and the honest answer to how to reach Chandratal Lake is this: you drive. The lake has no airport, no railway station and no direct bus. The nearest sealed approach is the Batal-Kunzum road, and the final stretch is a short walk of about 1 km (15 minutes) from the parking area to the water. Most travellers come from Manali (about 125 km) over the Atal Tunnel, or from Kaza (about 80 km) over the Kunzum Pass. The road is seasonal. It usually opens in mid-June once the Border Roads Organisation clears the pass of snow, and closes again around early October. Below is every route, the bus option, the nearest station and airport, and what the drive is actually like.

Chandratal Lake at a Glance

The quickest way to plan is to fix your gateway first (Manali or Kaza), then the season, then your mode. There is no way to reach the lake itself by public transport, so every route ends with a private vehicle, a shared taxi, or a walk from Batal. Here is the snapshot.

Access mode Nearest point / route Approx distance and time Good to know
By road (car / taxi) Manali via Atal Tunnel, Gramphu, Chhatru, Batal ~125 km · 6 to 8 hrs Most popular; drive to Batal, then to the lake parking
By road (car / taxi) Kaza via Kunzum Pass, Batal ~80 km · 3 to 4 hrs Shortest route; better acclimatised if coming from Spiti
By bus (HRTC) Manali-Kaza HRTC bus, alight Batal Board Manali · ~8 hrs to Batal No bus to the lake; last ~14 km by shared taxi or on foot
By train + road Joginder Nagar station, then road Station ~290 km from the lake Nearest railhead; most people use Chandigarh for connections
By air + road Bhuntar (Kullu) airport, then road Airport ~180 km from the lake Limited domestic flights; Chandigarh ~450 km is the bigger hub

Distances are road distances and are approximate; hill routes change with diversions and weather. Confirm live status before you set out.

Best Time to Visit and When the Road Opens

This is the single fact that decides your trip. Chandratal is a high-altitude lake reached over two passes, and the approach is snowbound for most of the year. Plan for a summer or early-autumn window and nothing else.

The season, month by month

Opening (mid-June): Roughly mid-June to early July: Kunzum Pass reopens after the winter clearance. Streams run high from snowmelt, and a few water crossings on the Gramphu-Batal stretch can be tricky early in the season.

Peak (July-Sept): Mid-July to September: the most reliable window. Long daylight, campsites at Batal and Chandratal open, clear night skies. Late August can bring monsoon spells, so watch for landslides on the Manali side.

Closing (October): Early October: the road is still open in dry years but nights drop below freezing and the pass can close on the first heavy snow. Go early in the month and keep a buffer day.

Closed (Nov-May): November to May: the passes are shut and the lake is inaccessible by road. Do not attempt it.

For 2026, the road opened on schedule in June and is open now (August). Because opening and closing dates shift by a couple of weeks each year with the snow, check the current status with the Lahaul-Spiti district administration or a local operator before locking dates. If you want the night sky, a new-moon date in August or September gives the clearest view of the Milky Way over the water.

How to Reach Chandratal Lake from Manali

This is the route most people take, and it is the one to plan around. From Manali you head north through the Atal Tunnel, which replaced the old Rohtang Pass crossing and cut hours off the drive. The turn for Spiti is at Gramphu, just past the tunnel, where you leave the smooth Leh highway for the rough Spiti road.

The sequence is Manali to Atal Tunnel, then Gramphu, Chhatru, Chhota Dhara and Batal, and finally the Batal-Kunzum road to the Chandratal parking. Total distance is about 125 km, but do not judge it by the number. The Gramphu-Batal section is unpaved, with stream crossings, and averages well under 30 km/h. Budget 6 to 8 hours, more if the water is high. From the parking it is a level 1 km walk to the lake. Many travellers break the drive with a night at a Batal or Chandratal campsite rather than doing it in one push from Manali.

How to Reach Chandratal Lake from Delhi

There is no one-day route from Delhi. Chandratal is about 530 to 550 km away and the last third is slow mountain road, so treat it as a two-day journey. The standard plan is Delhi to Manali overnight (an HRTC Volvo or a private cab covers the roughly 530 km in 12 to 14 hours), a night in Manali to rest and acclimatise, then the Manali-to-Chandratal drive described above the next day.

Do not try to go straight through. The jump from Delhi's altitude to 4,300 m in under 48 hours is how people get altitude sickness. A night at Manali (about 2,000 m) and, ideally, a night at Batal before the lake gives your body time to adjust. Travellers coming from Mumbai, Ahmedabad or the south usually fly to Chandigarh or Bhuntar and pick up the Manali route from there.

How to Reach from Kaza, and via Chandigarh or Shimla

From Kaza (via Kunzum Pass)

If you are already in Spiti, Kaza is the closest gateway at about 80 km. The route climbs to the Kunzum Pass (around 4,551 m), where the road tops out before dropping to Batal and the Chandratal turn. It is a 3 to 4 hour drive on a fair day. The big advantage of arriving from Kaza is acclimatisation: if you have spent a few days in Spiti you are already used to the altitude, which makes Chandratal far more comfortable than a rushed run up from Manali.

Via Chandigarh or Shimla

Chandigarh is the practical arrival hub for most flyers and the road-trippers who prefer a gentler climb. From Chandigarh it is about 450 km to the lake, and the classic acclimatisation-friendly plan is the Shimla-Kinnaur circuit: Chandigarh to Shimla, then along the Kinnaur valley to Kaza, and up to Chandratal over Kunzum. It is longer than the Manali route but you gain altitude gradually over several days, which your body will thank you for. This is the route seasoned Spiti travellers recommend for a first high-altitude trip.

How to Reach Chandratal Lake by Bus (HRTC)

There is no bus to Chandratal itself, but you can get most of the way by public transport, which matters if you are travelling on a budget or solo. The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) runs an ordinary bus between Manali and Kaza during the season, and it passes through Batal, the closest point on the route to the lake.

The plan is simple. Board the HRTC Manali-Kaza bus early (it leaves Manali in the morning and takes roughly 8 hours to reach Batal), tell the conductor you want to get off at Batal, and cover the last stretch of about 14 km to the lake by shared taxi, by hitching with other travellers, or on foot for the fit and acclimatised. From Kaza the same bus runs in the opposite direction and drops you at Batal in about 3 to 4 hours. Fares are modest for the state bus. Confirm the current fare and the exact 2026 running dates on the HRTC site (hrtchp.com) or at the Manali bus stand, because the service starts only after the pass opens.

Nearest Airport and Nearest Railway Station

By air

The nearest airport is Bhuntar (Kullu-Manali), about 180 km from the lake, with limited domestic flights. For more connections most travellers fly into Chandigarh, about 450 km away, and drive the rest via Manali. From either airport you continue by cab or bus to Manali and pick up the road route. There is no way to fly closer; the last leg is always by road.

By train

Chandratal has no railway station of its own. The nearest railhead is the narrow-gauge Joginder Nagar Railway Station, about 290 km away, but it sits on a small heritage line with very limited connections. For a practical rail journey, most people book to Chandigarh or Kalka and drive from there. If you are specifically searching for the nearest railway station to Chandratal, the answer is Joginder Nagar; for actually getting there by train from a major city, Chandigarh is the smarter railhead.

Road Conditions, the Batal to Lake Walk and Altitude

The Chandratal road rewards a little preparation. Two things catch people out: the state of the road and the altitude.

Road and the final approach

The Gramphu-Batal section is the rough part, unpaved, with several stream crossings that swell in the afternoon as the day's snowmelt comes down. Cross early where you can. A high-clearance vehicle or an SUV is strongly advised; ordinary hatchbacks struggle. From Batal the motorable road runs to the Chandratal parking, and the lake is a gentle 1 km walk from there (about 15 minutes). Camping is not allowed on the lakeshore itself, so tents and the two well-known parachute cafes at Batal are set back from the water.

Altitude and acclimatisation

At 4,300 m the air is thin, and acute mountain sickness (AMS) is a real risk if you climb too fast. Headache, nausea and breathlessness are the early signs. The best defence is a slow gain in altitude: a night at Manali or Kaza, ideally a night at Batal before the lake, plenty of water, and no alcohol. If symptoms get worse, the only real cure is to descend. Carry basic medication and check with a doctor if you have a heart or lung condition before attempting the trip.

Planning Your Trip with TravelTriangle

We plan Spiti and Chandratal trips year round, and the same questions come up every season: when does the pass open, is the road driveable this week, and how do I not fall sick at the top. Our Spiti desk checks route and permit status against the Lahaul-Spiti administration and BRO road updates before every departure, so the dates on a booked itinerary reflect the real season, not last year's calendar.

"On the Gramphu-Batal stretch, cross the water channels before noon. They rise through the afternoon with the melt, and that is when vehicles get stuck," says our TT Spiti desk.

Every Chandratal package is customisable, and our verified local agents in Himachal handle permits, acclimatisation-friendly itineraries and SUV transport.

Keep planning: read the Chandratal Lake travel guide for timings, entry rules and things to do, check Chandratal Lake timings and entry fees, explore the wider Spiti Valley tourism guide, or browse customisable Himachal tour packages that include Chandratal and Spiti.

By Air

The centre of India is well-connected to all parts of the country. However, due to the remoteness of the Chandratal Lake in Spiti Valley, one can only reach the place by road. Tourists wishing to explore Chandratal Lake can fly to the nearest airport in Bhuntar, near Kullu, approximately 537km away from the lake. However, this airport is accessible only for domestic flights with limited operations. Another nearby airport is Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport in Chandigarh, approximately 636km farther from Chandratal Lake, which is best for international travellers. Upon reaching any of these airports, one can travel further either by taking a bus or cab to Chandratal Lake.

By Road

For travellers researching how to reach Chandratal Lake, travelling by road is considered the most practical and adventurous option. Two major routes are via Manali and Shimla which lead to Chandratal Lake. For a hassle-free journey, it is recommended to take the Shimla route, however, for a shorter route travelling via the Manali route is best. Travelling by road might be a tiring journey due to rough roads, however, it is the most convenient commute to reach this beautiful lake. Regular Volvo and other buses operate from major cities in India to Chandratal Lake, which can be booked for a comfortable journey. Another option for those planning a road trip to Chandratal Lake is hiring a private cab, shared taxi or taking one’s vehicle for a memorable trip.

By Train

Travelling by train is a much more affordable alternative to airways. The nearest railway station to Chandratal Lake is Joginder Nagar Railway Station, approximately at a distance of 622km from the Lake, however, it has a limited train network. Because of this, travellers planning how to reach Chandratal Lake by train often choose larger railway stations such as Shimla Railway Station or Chandigarh Railway Station, which have better rail connections from major Indian cities. One can catch a direct or connecting train to reach any of these railway stations. From there one needs to continue their journey via car, taxi or bus.

My stay in Kaza at Nyma Mudhouse was fine until the morning I checked out as the caretaker of the property peeped through the bathroom window while I was in the shower. I raised it with my travel agent as well as the owner of the property and it was dealt with, however, it still haunts me till date.
Would suggest if you thoroughly check and verify the hotels/homestays before agreeing to do business with them as a tourist trusts you and goes ahead with your travel plan. Rest everything was just splendid especially my stay in CHHITKUL at Avika Homestay. Their hospitality, warm and welcoming service as well as the feeling of being treated like I belonged there touched my heart!

    Spiti Travel FAQs

How do I reach Chandratal Lake from Manali?

Drive north from Manali through the Atal Tunnel, then via Gramphu, Chhatru and Batal to the Chandratal parking, roughly 125 km in 6 to 8 hours. The last section from Gramphu to Batal is unpaved with stream crossings, so a high-clearance vehicle helps. From the parking the lake is a 1 km, 15-minute walk.

How do I reach Chandratal Lake from Delhi?

Plan it as two days. Take an overnight bus or cab from Delhi to Manali (about 530 km, 12 to 14 hours), rest and acclimatise for a night in Manali, then drive Manali to Chandratal the next day. Going straight through from Delhi to 4,300 m risks altitude sickness, so the Manali halt matters.

When does the road to Chandratal open, and what is the best time to visit?

The road is usually open from mid-June, once the Border Roads Organisation clears the Kunzum Pass, until early October. Mid-July to September is the most reliable window. From November to May the passes are snowbound and the lake cannot be reached by road.

Can I reach Chandratal Lake by bus?

There is no direct bus to the lake, but the HRTC Manali-Kaza bus runs through Batal in season. Board it at Manali (about 8 hours to Batal) or at Kaza (3 to 4 hours), get off at Batal, and cover the final 14 km to Chandratal by shared taxi or on foot. Confirm fares and dates at hrtchp.com.

How do I reach Chandratal from Kaza?

Kaza is the closest gateway at about 80 km. The route crosses the Kunzum Pass (around 4,551 m) and drops to Batal before the Chandratal turn, a 3 to 4 hour drive. Arriving from Kaza is easier on the body because you are already acclimatised to Spiti's altitude.

Which is the nearest railway station and airport to Chandratal Lake?

The nearest railway station is Joginder Nagar (about 290 km), on a narrow-gauge line with limited service, so most travellers use Chandigarh for rail connections. The nearest airport is Bhuntar in Kullu (about 180 km) with limited domestic flights; Chandigarh airport, about 450 km away, has far more connections. From either, you continue by road.

Do I need a permit for Chandratal Lake?

Indian travellers do not need a special permit for Chandratal itself, but an e-pass issued by the Sub-Divisional Magistrates of Kaza and Lahaul is required for tourists visiting the area. Carry a valid photo ID. Foreign nationals should check the current rules for Lahaul-Spiti before travelling.

Is there an entry fee for Chandratal Lake?

No. There is no entry fee to visit Chandratal Lake. You only pay for your transport, any shared taxi from Batal, and camping or stay if you choose to spend a night in the area.

Is accommodation available near Chandratal Lake?

Camping on the lakeshore is not permitted, so tents and the well-known parachute cafes are set back at Batal and at designated campsites roughly 3 to 5 km from the water. You can stay overnight at these campsites or find basic rooms at Batal. Book ahead in peak season, as options are limited.

Can I see the Milky Way and camp at Chandratal?

Yes. At 4,300 m with almost no light pollution, Chandratal is one of the finest stargazing spots in the Himalayas, and on a clear new-moon night the Milky Way reflects on the water. Stay at a designated campsite near Batal rather than the lakeshore, and carry warm layers as nights drop below freezing.

Should I trek from Batal to Chandratal, and is it difficult?

You can trek the roughly 14 km from Batal to Chandratal if you want the adventure and the views, and the route is rated easy to moderate for a fit, acclimatised walker. If you are short on time or not used to the altitude, a shared taxi or cab from Batal is quicker and costs around Rs 500 to Rs 1,000.
