About Neka Art Museum In Bali
Neka Art Museum is one very attractive attraction of Ubud in Bali. The museum was founded by renowned art collector, Suteja Neka who was a Balinese teacher before going around the world collecting Balinese artwork. In the year 1982, the Ministry of Culture and Education inaugurated the Neka Art Museum. When you take the Neka Art Museum tour you will see a lot of paintings and sculptures in all six different buildings inside the premises. Some of the Neka Art Museum attractions include classical and contemporary Balinese paintings, ancient sculptures and modern Indonesian sculptures, etc. The Neka Art Museum Bali speaks and reflects traditional Balinese faith and beliefs.
History of the Neka Art Museum
Suteja Neka was the son of Bali's famous wood carver, I Wayan Neka. He studied to be a teacher. But in the middle of his teaching job, Suteja Neka quit and began helping his father to present his artworks, preserve and document other Balinese painting. In the year 1966, Neka sold many Balinese paintings to tourist from his small shop. Later in this process, Neka realized how important it is to preserve the artwork of Bali and thus began his quest to find and collect the artwork. With the help of Dutch artist Rudolf Bonnet, he went aboard where he saw Balinese art that was now rare in Indonesia. So on his return, he established the Neka Art Museum. Currently, the museum has classical puppet style paintings from the 17th century, and also many other Ubud style paintings.
