About Surinsar Lake

Surinsar is a small lake in a bowl of forested Shivalik hills, with a wooded island in the middle and a paved path along its shore. It is the quieter twin of Mansar Lake. There is no big temple complex here and far fewer tour groups, so on a weekday morning you may have the shore mostly to yourself.

Surinsar and Mansar have religious importance because of a Mahabharata legend that links the two lakes through an underground tunnel (the full story is below). Their waters are considered holy and auspicious, which is why swimming is not allowed and boating was banned here for about 30 years until the Tourism Department relaunched it in November 2020.

Pine and broadleaf forest climbs the slopes on every side, and the Surinsar-Mansar Wildlife Sanctuary wraps around the lake. From November, migratory ducks settle on the open water.

The island in the middle is home to thousands of bats, and from the shore you can usually see them hanging in its trees. You cannot go across, as there is no boat or bridge to it. If you visit in summer, you will see lotus leaves and flowers floating on parts of the surface. Jammu families come here on Sundays for a picnic, birders come in winter, and many Vaishno Devi pilgrims stop on the way to or from Katra.

Where is Surinsar Lake? (district, map and GPS)

Surinsar Lake sits above Surinsar village in Jammu district, in the Shivalik hills east of Jammu city. The village falls under the Jammu postal division with PIN code 180017. Some guides, including Wikipedia, list the lake under Samba district alongside Mansar, and reuse Mansar's coordinates, which drops the map pin on the wrong lake. The correct position is 32.7702 N, 75.0411 E. When you search "Surinsar Lake" in your maps app, check that the pin sits about 13 km north-west of Mansar, beyond Bajalta. Surinsar is about 30 km from Jammu city by the Bajalta road. Older guides, including JKTDC and Wikipedia, still quote 42 km, and Incredible India says 24 km. We measured every road distance below in October 2026, and the drive times allow for the narrow hill stretch after Bajalta.

How to reach Surinsar Lake

Road is the only way in. There is no railhead or airstrip at the lake, so you fly into Jammu Airport (IXJ) or take a train to Jammu Tawi (JAT) and drive the last 30 km. Our how to reach Jammu guide covers flights and trains from Delhi and other cities.

Via Bajalta (the shortest route). From Jammu, head east to Bajalta and take the Surinsar road up through the forest. It is paved but narrow, with a few sharp bends after Bajalta. The roadside viewpoint at Bajalta is a good tea stop on the way. Avoid this road straight after heavy rain.

Via Samba and Mansar (the loop). Drive the Jammu to Pathankot highway (NH 44) to Samba, climb the 19 km road to Mansar, then take the sanctuary road about 15 km to Surinsar and come home via Bajalta. You see both lakes and never drive the same road twice. The full loop is a little over 100 km, so give it the whole day.

By bus. Minibuses leave the Jammu General Bus Stand for Surinsar via Bajalta, mostly in the morning. They are cheap and slow. Ask for the last return bus before you set off, because evening services are thin.

By taxi. A day hire from Jammu that covers Surinsar and Mansar costs about Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,500 for a hatchback or sedan in 2026, depending on the season and how long you stay. Agree the fare and the stops before you leave.

From Katra. Come down towards Jammu and turn off for Bajalta, about 60 km in all. Leave Katra by 8 am and you can be back for dinner, even with Mansar added.

Surinsar Lake timings and what you pay

Surinsar Lake is open 7 am to 5 pm every day, and entry to the lakefront is free. You pay only for the adventure park rides, boating when it runs, and parking. Ticket prices for the park are on our Surinsar Lake entry fee page. Try to arrive by 3:30 pm. The forest road back is unlit, and you want to be off it before dark.

Things to do at Surinsar Lake

1. Walk the lakeside path. A paved walkway with benches and railings runs along the shore. Allow 45 minutes to an hour at an easy pace, with stops for photos of the island.

2. See the bat island. The wooded islet in the centre is off-limits, but from the shore you can usually see and hear the colony roosting in its trees. The big flight out comes at dusk, which falls after the 5 pm closing for most of the year, so do not plan your day around it. The island is still what sets Surinsar apart from Mansar.

3. Go birding. From November to February, migratory ducks, coots and grebes winter on the open water, and kingfishers and herons stay all year. JKTDC lists 15 bird species and 3 key mammal species for the area. Bring binoculars.

4. Try the adventure park. A small fun park by the lake has a giant swing, trampolines, a climbing wall and a rope course, which is what most Jammu families come for. It is being restructured in 2026 (more below), so some rides may be closed.

5. See the summer lotus. From roughly June to August, lotus leaves and pink flowers cover the shallow edges of the lake.

6. Boating (check on arrival). Boating was stopped for about 30 years out of respect for the lake's sacred status. It restarted on 8 November 2020 with two pedal boats and two rowing boats run by the Tourism Department, with the Wildlife Department's approval. Visitors since then report that boats do not always run, so treat a ride as a bonus.

7. Picnic by the water. Families spread out on the grassy banks with packed lunches. The lake itself is treated as sacred, so keep it clean and quiet. The old temples of Durga, Umapati Mahadev and Narsimha stand at Mansar, so save your darshan for that leg of the day.

8. Drive the sanctuary road to Mansar. The 15 km stretch through the Surinsar-Mansar Wildlife Sanctuary is the prettiest part of the day. Early mornings are best for spotting barking deer and peafowl.

The legend of Surinsar Lake

Local tradition ties Surinsar and Mansar to the Mahabharata. Babruvahana, Arjuna's son, ruled these hills. When Arjuna's horse from the Ashwamedha yajna wandered into his kingdom, father and son fought without knowing each other, and Babruvahana killed Arjuna. To bring him back he needed a mani (jewel) held by Sheshnag, the serpent king, in the underworld. He shot an arrow into the ground here, and the tunnel (surang) it bored became his road to Sheshnag. Where he went in, a lake formed and was called Surangsar, which became Surinsar. Where he came out, the lake was called Manisar, now Mansar. Most tellings name his mother as Chitrangada, while Incredible India names Ulupi. The story is why the two lakes are treated as one sacred pair, and why bathing and boating were discouraged here for so long.

Surinsar is not a stand-alone pond. It is one half of a protected landscape that runs across the hills to Mansar, and the facts below are what make it more than a picnic spot.

What is changing at Surinsar in 2026

On 19 October 2026, J&K's Secretary Tourism, Avny Lavasa, inspected works at Surinsar and Mansar with the CEO of the Surinsar Mansar Development Authority and officers from the PWD and Wildlife departments. Two projects are under way at Surinsar. The old Dak Bungalow is being upgraded and renovated for Rs 194 lakh, and the fun park and its facilities are being restructured for Rs 79.23 lakh. Residents also raised the problem of a sinking zone near the lake, and the Secretary ordered the departments to resolve it within a fixed time. Expect fenced-off work areas along parts of the shore into 2027.

Best time to visit Surinsar Lake

October to March is the best time to visit Surinsar Lake. Days are mild, the forest road is dry, and winter brings the migratory birds. Summer is hot in the Jammu hills, but it is lotus season. The table shows what each part of the year is like.

Surinsar Lake vs Mansar Lake

Mansar and Surinsar are not the same lake. They are twins, joined by legend and by the sanctuary road, and most visitors see both on one day. Here is how they differ.

If you only have time for one, pick Surinsar for quiet and the bat island, and Mansar for boating and the temples. Our Mansar Lake guide covers the twin in detail.

One-day Surinsar and Mansar itinerary

From Jammu. Leave by 7:30 am on the Bajalta road and reach Surinsar by about 8:30, when the water is still and the birds are out. Walk the shore and let the kids loose in the adventure park. Around 10:30, drive the sanctuary road to Mansar, visit the Sheshnag shrine and take a boat before the late-morning queues. Have lunch by Mansar, then return to Jammu on NH 44 via Samba, home by about 4 pm. Coming from Udhampur or Katra? Reverse it. Do Mansar in the morning and Surinsar after lunch, then leave by 5 pm for the drive down via Bajalta.

Where to stay and eat near Surinsar

There is no hotel at Surinsar right now. The lakeside Dak Bungalow is closed for its Rs 194 lakh renovation. The nearest rooms are the JKTDC huts and the Alpine Hotel at Mansar, about 15 km away, which you book through JKTDC. Most travellers stay in Jammu or Katra, where the choice is much wider, and come out for the day. Food at Surinsar is limited to a few tea and snack stalls that open mainly on weekends and in season, so carry water and a packed lunch, or plan to eat at Mansar.

Places to visit near Surinsar Lake

• Mansar Lake (about 15 km). The larger twin, with the Sheshnag shrine, the parikrama path and regular boating.

• Surinsar-Mansar Wildlife Sanctuary. The forest between the lakes, best seen from the connecting road early in the morning.

• Bajalta viewpoint (about 18 km). A roadside lookout over the Tawi valley on the way in.

• Jammu city (about 30 km). Raghunath Temple and Bahu Fort make a good afternoon on the way back.

Surinsar Lake travel tips

• Go on a weekday. Sundays bring large picnic groups and loudspeakers.

• Carry cash for parking, park rides and stalls. Mobile signal is patchy in the forest, so UPI can fail.

• Do not swim or fish. The lake is a sacred, protected wetland, and the edges drop off quickly.

• Leave the lake by 5 pm. The road back through the forest has no street lights.

• Take your rubbish home. Litter along the edges is the most common complaint in visitor reviews.

• Expect fenced work zones near the Dak Bungalow and the fun park while the 2026 projects run.
