Things to Do in Jammu: 20 Best Activities, Day Trips and Itineraries

Most people pass through Jammu on the way to the Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra or the Kashmir valley, and treat it as a railway platform. That is a mistake. The winter capital of the Dogra kings has two palace museums, a temple on almost every second lane (it is called the City of Temples for a reason), a cable car and a food culture you won't find in Srinagar. This guide lists 20 things to do in Jammu with the distance, time needed and cost for each, followed by half-day to three-day plans and a month-by-month guide. Things to Do in Jammu City

Items 1 to 10 sit inside the city or on its edge, and an auto or app cab connects any two of them in under 20 minutes. Two rules shape the day. Both palace museums close on Mondays, and Bawe Wali Mata inside Bahu Fort is packed on Tuesdays and Sundays.

1. Catch the evening aarti at Raghunath Temple

Raghunath Mandir is the reason Jammu is called the City of Temples. It is a complex of seven shrines, begun under Maharaja Gulab Singh and finished under his son Ranbir Singh in the 19th century, with gold-topped spires above Raghunath Bazaar. The temple is open from 6 am to 8 pm. Come about an hour before closing. The midday visit is a quiet walk past rows of saligrams, while the evening one is bells, lamps and a crowd of local families. 2. See the 12 crystal lingams at Ranbireshwar Temple

Maharaja Ranbir Singh built Ranbireshwar on Shalimar Road in 1883. The main hall holds an 8-foot black-stone Shiva lingam, and the side galleries keep 12 crystal shivlings between 15 cm and 38 cm tall, per Incredible India. 3. Climb Bahu Fort for darshan at Bawe Wali Mata

Bahu Fort stands on a rocky ridge on the left bank of the Tawi, roughly 5 km from the city centre. Inside its walls is the Mahakali temple locals call Bawe Wali Mata, which the District Jammu administration describes as second only to Vaishno Devi in the region. Pilgrims flock here on Tuesdays and Sundays, so pick a weekday morning if you want to see the fort without a queue. During both Navratris the Bahu Mela fills the slope below the gate. 4. Ride the Jammu Ropeway from Bahu Fort to Mahamaya

Most Jammu lists leave the cable car out, which is odd, because it gives the best view in the city. The Jammu Ropeway was built in two legs, but only one carries passengers today. The short leg from Bahu Fort up to the Mahamaya hill is running. The longer leg across the Tawi from Mahamaya to Peer Kho has been shut since its station was damaged in the 2025 floods, and no reopening date has been announced. From the cabin you see the old city stacked on the far bank and the bridges over the river. Tickets are sold at the Bahu Fort station, with fares posted at the counter. Ride up to Mahamaya and back, and you can pair it with items 3 and 5 in one morning. Peer Kho (item 8) is a short cab ride away.

5. Walk India's largest underground aquarium at Bagh-e-Bahu

The terraced Mughal-style gardens of Bagh-e-Bahu step down from Bahu Fort to the Tawi. Up top there are flowerbeds, fountains and a small artificial lake, but the reason to go is underneath. You enter the aquarium through the open mouth of a giant concrete fish, and the tunnel runs over 220 m. JKTDC calls it the largest underground aquarium in the country. A 2024 J&K government order set aquarium entry at Rs 100 per adult and Rs 30 per child up to 10 years, and the garden itself charges between Rs 5 and Rs 25. 6. See the 120 kg gold throne at Amar Mahal Museum

Amar Mahal looks like a French chateau dropped onto a bluff above the Tawi, and that is close to the truth. It was built in the 1890s for Raja Amar Singh to a French architect's design. Today it is a museum, about 3 km from the Jammu bus stand, and its centrepiece is a throne made of roughly 120 kg of pure gold. The upstairs galleries hold Pahari miniatures and a library of some 25,000 books. 7. Explore Mubarak Mandi and the Dogra Art Museum

Mubarak Mandi was the royal seat of the Dogra kings for over 150 years, and its courtyards mix Rajasthani, Mughal and European styles. The restored Pink Hall now houses the Dogra Art Museum, with Basohli and Pahari miniature paintings, old manuscripts and arms. Museum hours are 10:30 am to 4:30 pm in winter and 8 am to 1:30 pm in summer, closed on Mondays, per Incredible India. In June 2026 a heritage hub called Royal Legacy opened inside the complex, with a Dogra food court, a library and a small theatre, which makes this a good lunch stop too. 8. Step into the Peer Kho cave temple

Peer Kho is a small natural cave on the Tawi bank, about 3.5 to 5 km from the town centre, with a self-formed Shiva lingam inside. Local tradition links it to Jamwant of the Ramayana, which is why some signboards call it Jamwant Gufa. It takes 30 to 45 minutes, and the ropeway station beside it has been closed since the 2025 floods, so come by auto or cab.

9. Spend a family afternoon at Jambu Zoo, Nagrota

Jambu Zoo opened in 2023 on the Jammu to Srinagar highway at Nagrota and replaced the old Manda mini zoo. It is a large, hilly campus with leopards, bears, deer and a big bird section, and a battery car takes tired legs between the enclosures. Give it two to three hours and go in the morning before the animals retreat into shade. It is closed on Tuesdays, per the zoo's own website and the Central Zoo Authority's annual reports. Hours are 9 am to 6 pm from April to October and 10 am to 4:30 pm from November to March.

10. Watch the sunset over the Tawi

Bahu Fort's ramparts and the Mahamaya hillside both face west across the river to the old city, and the light turns the temple spires orange for about 20 minutes. Time it with the Bagh-e-Bahu fountains and you have a free evening that most visitors miss. Carry a jacket from November to February. Riverside evenings drop to single digits.

Day Trips from Jammu

Jammu sits where the plains meet the Shivalik hills, so lakes, forts and snow are all within a day's drive, most of them under three hours. Hire a taxi for the day, since buses to these spots are slow and irregular. The table above has the distances. These are the eight trips worth the drive.

11. Go boating on Mansar Lake

Mansar is 62 km east of Jammu in Samba district, a lake about 1.2 km long and up to 38 m deep, ringed by forested hills. It is a Ramsar wetland, and the Sheshnag shrine on its bank, a boulder hung with iron chains, makes it a pilgrimage spot too. Paddle boats rent by the hour from the jetty, and a paved path runs along the shore. The lake is open 7 am to 5 pm. Go early on weekends, when families from the city arrive by 11. 12. Walk around Surinsar Lake

Surinsar is the smaller, quieter twin of Mansar, about 30 km from Jammu by road and about 15 km from Mansar, so the two make one half-day loop. The water is held sacred, so swimming is not allowed, and boating, revived by the Tourism Department in 2020 after a ban of about 30 years, runs only on some days. 13. Watch the Chenab from Akhnoor Fort

Akhnoor Fort stands on a cliff above the Chenab, about 28 km west of Jammu. The two-storey Dogra-era walls are partly ruined, which is part of the appeal, and the river below runs wide and green. Late afternoon gives the best light for photos. Akhnoor is also the road to Shiv Khori, so the two combine well. More in our Akhnoor Fort guide.

14. Visit Purmandal, the Chhota Kashi

Purmandal is a temple town on the Devika river, 30 to 39 km from Jammu depending on the route, and its cluster of Shiva temples earned it the name Chhota Kashi. On Mahashivratri in February or March it hosts one of the biggest fairs in the Jammu region, and on other days it is almost empty. It lies on the Samba side of the city, in the opposite direction from Akhnoor, so give it its own half day.

15. Find snow, skiing and paragliding at Patnitop

Patnitop, 112 km from Jammu at 2,024 m, is the nearest snow to the city. Snow usually lies from late December to February, and that is when the short beginner ski slopes and sledge rides open. Nathatop, about 12 km further and higher, gets deeper snow and runs paragliding when the weather allows. Sanasar's meadows, about 20 km on, are the spring and autumn paragliding base. Book activities with operators on the spot and check road status after heavy snow. 16. Visit the Shiv Khori cave shrine

Shiv Khori in Reasi district is about 140 km from Jammu and 80 km from Katra, according to JKTDC. From the road head at Ransoo it is a walk of about 3 km up a paved path to a natural cave about 200 m long, where a self-formed lingam about 4 feet high stands at the end. Parts of the passage are barely a metre wide. Darshan is free, and ponies and palkis are available at Ransoo. Plan a full day. Read our Shiv Khori guide for the route.

17. Do the Vaishno Devi yatra from Katra

The Vaishno Devi yatra is why most travellers come to Jammu at all. Katra, the base town, is about 50 km from Jammu, roughly two hours by road according to the Shrine Board. From Banganga the trek to the Bhawan is about 13 km and climbs to 5,200 ft. Ponies, palkis and battery cars cover parts of it, and travellers who cannot walk can book the helicopter from Katra to Sanjichhat on the Shrine Board website, up to 60 days ahead. Every pilgrim needs the free RFID Yatra Access Card from the Shrine Board, and it is scanned at the Banganga or Tarakote checkpost before the climb. You can register online, but the card itself is collected in person at a registration counter in Katra, for example at the bus stand or railway station. Most people stay one night. 18. Climb to Bhimgarh Fort above Reasi

Bhimgarh Fort sits on a hill about 150 m above Reasi town, roughly 70 km from Jammu. It is a compact stone fort with wide views over the Chenab valley, and it sees few visitors. Reasi is on the way to Shiv Khori and close to Katra, so add it to either trip rather than driving out for it alone.

19. Eat your way through Dogra food

Jammu's food is Dogra, not Kashmiri, and it is worth a dedicated two hours. Start with kalari kulcha, a slab of local kalari cheese fried until it blisters and stuffed into a kulcha, sold from carts in the old city. Then have rajma chawal made with the small red beans from Bhaderwah, and if a festival or wedding is on, a Dogra dham meal of ambal, madra and auria served on leaf plates. 20. Shop in Raghunath Bazaar

Raghunath Bazaar, around the temple of the same name, is the best market in Jammu for things to take home. Look for dry fruits (walnuts, almonds and dried apricots come down from Kashmir and Ladakh at better prices than at the airport), woollens and Pashmina shawls, embroidered fabric, wooden carvings and Basohli-style paintings. Most visitors have between a few hours and three days. These plans assume a weekday other than Monday, when both museums are shut.

What to Do in Jammu by Season

Jammu is a plains city at about 330 m, so its summers are fierce and its winters are mild. The season decides which half of this list you can enjoy.

Festivals change the city more than the weather does. Lohri in January is Jammu's biggest night, with bonfires and kite flying across the old city. Best Things to Do in Jammu for Families, Couples, Seniors and Adventure Seekers

• Families with kids. The ropeway, the Bagh-e-Bahu aquarium, Jambu Zoo and a boat on Mansar. Children under 10 pay Rs 30 at the aquarium.
• Couples. Sunset from Bahu Fort, a morning at Mansar Lake and two snowy days at Patnitop in January.
• Seniors. Raghunath and Ranbireshwar are flat and central, and Amar Mahal takes about 90 minutes at an easy pace. At Vaishno Devi, book the helicopter or battery car early.
• Adventure seekers. Skiing and sledging at Patnitop, paragliding at Nathatop or Sanasar, and the Shiv Khori cave walk.
