Kodanad, a beautiful town located in Ernakulam district of Kerala, along the river banks of Periyar is famous for its elephant training centre.

It is located at a distance of 45 kms from the city of Kochi. Kodanad Elephant Training Centre is one of those places in Kerala where new-born elephants are captured and domesticated later for a few purposes. However, capturing elephants in banned now and this place has recently become a training hub for elephants. In the earlier times, elephants were captured in the Malayattoor forests and then taking for training at the centre in Kodanad.

History of Kodanad Elephant Training Centre

Kodanad was known as one of the largest elephant training centres in the year between 1950 and 1960. Newly captured elephants from neighbouring areas were trained here ever since. It was in the year 1970 that government of India banned the capturing of elephants. After this ruling decision by the Government, Kodanad has been known as a rescue training centre of elephants.

Kodanad Elephant Training Centre is now relocated to Abhayaranyam near Kaprikkad. It is a famous tourist destination for many visitors who come here during a vacation. The Centre is bordered by high mountain ranges which make it a picturesque destination for many visitors. As the Kodanad is built along the southern banks of River Periyar, you can enjoy sightseeing at the places nearby. There are two more elephant training centres in Kerala - Muthanga of Wayanad and Konni in Pathanamthitta. At the PunnathurKotta in the district of Thrissur, more than 40 elephants are specially trained to be kept at the Guruvayur Temple. Kodanad Elephant sanctuary is a must-visit for all the elephant lovers out there.
