About Pookode Lake in Wayanad
A lovely and serene place to spend some time, Pookode Lake is a marvelous tourist destination in Kalpetta, in Wayanad. Located nearly 15 kms from the city center, this freshwater lake is an amazing place and a much-loved spot for locals and tourists alike. There is also a Pookode lake resort here, so that those looking to spend a night here can enjoy a relaxing night and a beautiful sunrise. You can also enjoy Pookode Lake boating here, if you fancy a good workout and want to really see the lake and its surroundings. Pookode Lake is nearly 40 mts deep, and covers an area of almost 40 acres. It is located nearly 770 mts above sea level, and is the second largest freshwater lake of Kerala. It is also the highest freshwater lake in the state. It is a great place for nature lovers and photographers, as well as for those who love to paint surreal looking landscapes. Bird watchers can also have a good time here, especially during migration season, since birds from nearby areas come over here to rest their wings before they take flight again.
A unique fact about the Pookode lake kalpetta is that it is shaped roughly like the geographical map of India, but this shape can only be made out if seen from above. There are a variety of fishes and other marine life in the lake, although fishing is prohibited here. Pethia pookodensis, a rare species of cyprinid fish, can be found only in the Pookode Lake. You are also sure to elusive blue lotus in the lake, and the lake is generally fully covered with these beauties when it is flowering season. Come over to this place and spend some time feeling at one with nature, and find your peace of mind.
Pookode Lake timings are 9 am to 5 pm every day. Pookode Lake entry fee is INR 10 for adults and INR 5 for children. After spending quality time here, visitors can travel from Pookode Lake to Banasura Dam which is about 26 km away.
