Built by the then ruler Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III, the Aga Khan Palace is a magnificent edifice in Pune since 1982.

Considered to be one of the most important landmarks in Indian history, the palace also has a heart-warming and charitable history. During the reign of Sultan Aga Khan III, the neighbouring areas of Pune were drastically hit by famine. One of the magnificent buildings, Aga Khan Palace in Pune is a famous tourist attraction which was designed by the renowned architect of the world, Charles Correa. It has a significant history attached to it. The Palace is associated with the memorials of Kasturba Gandhi, wife of Mahatma Gandhi. It is believed that Kasturba Gandhi and secretary Mahadev Desai, both of them spent their last moments in the premises of the palace. In their honor, their memorials have been safeguarded inside the grounds of the palace.

Aga Khan Palace is equipped with five, spacious halls and lawns. Redolent on Italian structure of architecture, the arches of the Palace are as mesmerising as ever. There are two floors in the Palace, and a corridor which spread across the entire building. The Palace also has a reputation of organizing several exhibitions that reflect on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, and offers a deep insight into his life.

Aga Khan Palace History

There is a deep-rooted history attached to the Aga Khan Palace that has everything to do with our Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. After the launch of the Quit India Movement, the Palace acted as the detention centre for Kasturba Gandhi, wife of Mahatma Gandhi, and secretary Mahadev Desai from 9 August 1942 to 6 May 1944. During this time, Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai breathed their last in the premises of the Aga Khan Palace, and have been buried here. In the year 1969, Aga Khan donated the Palace to the people of India in memory of Gandhiji. Now, the Palace serves as the memorial for Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi.
