Torna Fort History
According to the history of India, Torna Fort was constructed in the 13th century by a sect called Shaiva Panth who were the followers of Lord Shiva. History has it that in the year 1646, Chhatrapati Shivaji seized the fort when he was only fifteen years old. Ever since, the fort remains one of the premier forts captured under the Maratha empire. Later, the fort was renamed as 'Prachandagad' by Shivaji. He had also built various monuments and towers inside the fort.
The fort went under the siege of Mughal empire for a brief period during the 18th century after Sambhaji, son of Shivaji, was assassinated by the Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb. He also renamed it to Futulgaib as a symbol of the difficulties faced during the defense of the Fort. However, it was again conferred back to the Maratha confederacy under the Treaty of Purandar.
