How to Choose Your Bali Solo Package

By how social you want it. Want company? Pick a trip with two Canggu nights and ask for shared Batur and Nusa Penida tours. Want quiet? Three Ubud nights and private transfers.

By budget. Under Rs 50,000 for the land package means a 3-star or 4-star room and shared tours. Above Rs 65,000 buys 5-star stays or a private villa in Ubud. Cards above Rs 60,000 on this page mostly include flights.

By days. Four nights covers Ubud and one beach base. Five or six adds Nusa Penida. Seven lets you add the Gili Islands.

Bali Solo Trip Cost from India (Per Person, Own Room)

A 6-day Bali solo trip from India costs about Rs 68,000 to Rs 97,000 per person on a budget, including return flights, your own room, visa, levy, food and two shared day tours. A comfort trip with 4-star and 5-star stays runs about Rs 1,15,000 to Rs 1,72,000.

The single biggest line is the room. When two people travel, each pays half a room; alone, you pay all of it. On the 3-star and 4-star hotels in these packages that adds roughly Rs 1,500 to Rs 4,000 a night over the twin-share price, which is why a Rs 38,000 twin-share card becomes a Rs 50,000 trip for one. Everything else (the cab, the transfers, breakfast) costs a solo traveller about the same as anyone else.

Two ways to bring the number down. Fly from Bengaluru or Mumbai, where IndiGo's daily flights keep fares lowest, and travel in May, June or September instead of July, August or the Christmas week. Where to Base Yourself on a Solo Trip to Bali

Where you sleep decides how social your Bali trip feels, because the island's traffic turns a 20 km hop into an hour. These are the five bases solo travellers ask us about most.

Kuta. Kuta is where most beginners learn to surf. The waves on Kuta Beach break softly over sand, and the airport is 15 to 20 minutes away, so it works well for your first or last night. It also has the big malls for shopping. The beach is crowded and the nights are loud, so most solo travellers move on after a night or two.

Seminyak. Seminyak sits right next to Kuta. It is more expensive, but it has some of the best restaurants on the island and a long strip of bars and beach clubs where sitting alone at the bar is completely normal. The main roads are busy and well lit, which makes walking back after dinner easy.

Canggu. Canggu, 30 minutes up the coast from Seminyak, is the most social base in Bali for anyone travelling alone. Surf schools at Batu Bolong, co-working cafés and beachside restaurants mean you meet people without trying. Stay here two or three nights and book the Tanah Lot sunset from here, it is about 30 minutes away.

Ubud. Ubud is the island's culture town, full of temples, rice fields and yoga studios, and the solo travellers who come for calm usually extend their stay here. It is the starting point for the Mount Batur sunrise trek. The volcano itself is in Kintamani, about 1 to 1.5 hours north of Ubud, and pickups leave around 2 am so you reach the 1,717 m summit before dawn. Gili Islands. The Gili Islands are not in Bali. They belong to Lombok, in the neighbouring province of West Nusa Tenggara, and you reach them by fast boat from Padang Bai, a small port town on Bali's east coast, in about 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Gili Trawangan is the busiest of the three for snorkelling and turtle spotting, and islands around Bali compares it with Nusa Penida and Lembongan. Travel Alone, Not Lonely: Shared Tours in Bali

Is Bali Safe for Solo Travellers?

Yes. Bali is one of the easiest places in Southeast Asia to travel alone, and violent crime against tourists is rare. The problems solo travellers actually hit are smaller: bag snatching from motorbikes in Kuta and Seminyak, inflated taxi fares and scooter accidents. A few habits cover almost all of it.

• Book rides on Grab or Gojek, or take a Blue Bird taxi. A few streets in Ubud and Canggu have signs banning app pickups, so walk to the main road.

• Carry your bag on the side away from the road in Kuta and Seminyak.

• Skip the scooter unless you hold a motorcycle licence and an International Driving Permit. Without both, most travel insurance will not pay out after an accident.

• Change money only at authorised counters with a printed rate, and count it before you leave.

Bali for Women Travelling Solo

Ubud, Canggu and Seminyak are full of women travelling alone, and the main areas stay busy well into the evening. Know the Seasons and Climate in Bali to Plan Your Solo Trip

Bali sits about 8 degrees south of the equator, so the choice is dry season or wet. April to October is dry and best for the Batur trek and Nusa Penida boats; May, June and September give the same weather at lower prices than July, August and Christmas week. From November to March, expect afternoon showers, cheaper rooms and the odd cancelled boat, so keep a buffer day and check the date of Nyepi in March, when the airport closes for 24 hours. • Keep your passport, return ticket and visa receipt handy throughout the trip, with a photo of each on your phone and a copy in your email.
