Rated 4.30/5 ( based on 2002 reviews )
About Thalaiyar Falls in Kodaikanal
These falls are 975 feet (297m) high and the highest waterfall in Tamil Nadu, sixth highest waterfall in India and 267th highest in the world. At a distance of 40 Km from Kodaikanal and 485 Km from Chennai, Thalaiyar Falls gush down in the lush green slopes of Palani Hill ranges in the Dindigul District in Kodaikanal. Commonly known as Rat Tail Falls, the Falls are nicknamed so as these can be spotted across the valley as a long thin silver strip of water gushing down with a backdrop of black rock cliff face that seems to pop out of the foothills. The extreme edge at the top of the falls has a low concrete wall on either side that concentrates the cascade to focus into a better rat tail shape.
Thalaiyar Falls view is amazing from the Dum Dum Rock viewpoint on the Batalugundu-Kodaikanal Ghat Road. It is also among the widest falls in the vicinity that ranges from 13 km on the Ghat road to Kodaikanal. For those in love with the adrenaline rush, this highest waterfall in Tamilnadu offers opportunities for trekking and hiking. The top of the falls is a great site for the same. However, Thalaiyar Falls trekking should be undertaken only in dry season, beginning at Manjalar Dam. The trail passes through fragrant mango orchards and potato fields, winding along the Manjalar Reservoir. It then ascends to the small shrine of Goddess Kamakshi.
Thalaiyar Falls in Kodaikanal allow spectators to enjoy its excellent beauty from the roadside benches and spent some quality time amidst the refreshing setting. Below one wall here, rests a huge flat rock. Visitors can descend to the edge of this rock and have a look of the river at the bottom that flows calmly through the woods.
Thalaiyar Falls in Dindigul attracts many animals as serves them as a watering hole. Many regular sightings have been reported. At Dum Dum Rock there is a view tower in the park from where visitors can get an awesome view of the falls and the Manjalar Dam.
