Why Visit Narkanda

Narkanda earns its place on a Himachal trip for one reason above the rest: it is where you can actually ski in the state without booking Auli in Uttarakhand or fighting the Solang queue near Manali. The Dhomri slope, about a kilometre of run, works through the December to February snow and takes complete beginners. Above the town, Hatu Peak climbs to roughly 3,400 m (about 11,150 ft), and the switchback drive to the Hatu Mata temple at the top is the single best view in the area. The rest of the year the draw is quieter and greener. Narkanda holds some of Himachal's oldest apple orchards, including the Stokes farm that first brought commercial apples to the region, and the deodar and oak forest around the ridge stays cool while the plains bake.

How To Reach Narkanda

By road. Narkanda is on NH5, the Hindustan-Tibet Road, about 65 km past Shimla (roughly a 2 to 2.5 hour drive). From Chandigarh it is around 180 km, and most road trips run Chandigarh to Shimla to Narkanda. Regular HRTC and private buses cover the Shimla-Rampur route and stop at Narkanda.

By air. The practical airport is Chandigarh, about 180 km away, with frequent flights from across India. A private cab or transfer covers the rest. Shimla's Jubbarhatti airport is closer but has very limited service.

By rail. The nearest railhead is Shimla, reached by the UNESCO-listed Kalka-Shimla toy train from Kalka (itself linked to Delhi and Chandigarh). From Shimla it is a 2-hour drive up to Narkanda.

Best Time To Visit

Go December to February if you want the snow and the ski slope. This is Narkanda's peak, and it books out fast over Christmas and New Year. April to June is the pick for cool weather, orchard walks and treks up to Hatu Peak. July to September brings the monsoon and the apple harvest, with heavier rain and the odd landslip on the highway.

How Many Days And Which Circuit

How long you need depends on how far up the valley you want to go. Use this to pick a shape before you ask for a quote.

• 1N/2D or 2N/3D. A quick weekend of Shimla plus a Narkanda day, enough for the ski slope or the Hatu Peak drive.

• 3N/4D. The comfortable version: Shimla, a full Narkanda day and time to actually enjoy the orchards and the peak without rushing.

• 4N/5D or longer. Push on past Narkanda into Kinnaur for Sangla, Chitkul (the last village before the Tibet border) and Kalpa, all along NH5.

Places To Visit And Things To Do

Hatu Peak. The high point at about 3,400 m, with the wooden Hatu Mata temple at the summit and a short trek option of roughly 7 to 8 km for those who skip the drive.

Dhomri skiing point. Narkanda's ski slope, about a kilometre long, open in the December to February snow and beginner-friendly with instructors and gear on hire.

Tani Jubbar Lake. A small, quiet lake ringed by forest and a little temple, about 10 km from town, good for a slow half day.

Stokes Farm. The historic apple orchard at Thanedar, near Narkanda, where Satyanand Stokes planted the first commercial apples in Himachal in the early 1900s.

Mahamaya Temple, Kacheri. A Kali temple about 7 km from Narkanda, a common short local stop.

On the ground travellers fill the days with skiing and snow play in winter, and treks toward Hatu Peak and Shrikot, camping with a bonfire, cycling the orchard roads and a lot of photography the rest of the year.
