About Katarmal Sun Temple in Almora

Drawing thousands of devotees from all around India, the Katarmal Sun Temple is a sacred pilgrimage site for Hindus. The temple is built in such a way that the first rays of the sun fall on the idol of Lord Burhadita, an ancient Sun God. The temple shows exemplary architectural beauty and is intermingled with impressive carvings on the wall. The worshippers of the Sun God flock to this temple as it is the second most important sun temple after the Konarak temple in Orissa. The atmosphere surrounding the temple is calm and soothing. The Katarmal Temple is located in close proximity to Almora, approximately 19 km from the main town.

Constructed by a Katyuri King, Katramalla in the 9th century, the Katarmal Surya temple gets its name from the ruler who ordered its construction. It is a rare sun temple that is found amidst the hills. You can trek your way to the temple. It is a steep climb of about 2 km and is likely to provide utter satisfaction once you witness the majestic view from the hilltop. The Sun temple houses the deity Burhadita, the ancient Sun God. It also houses 45 other temples. The other temples have idols of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and many more. The architecture of the Katarmal Sun Temple, Almora depicts the style that was prevalent in that era and is bound to leave you enraptured. The temple was declared an important monument under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958.

La Nivasa hotel was very nice and the food, hospitality of the staff was very friendly. Specail thanks to Deepak who worked in La Nivasa for taking care of our request. The Cab driver experience was okay and could be improved. The driving partner ask for extra cash if they need to wait after 6 p.m.

, this was never communicated before the trip and they do create a scene out of it. Last time when I visited Manali faced similar issue and this time in Nainital was not so different experience.
