Santa Cruz Basilica in Kochi
Santa Cruz Basilica is a Roman Catholic Church in Fort Kochi and one of the eight basilicas in India, making it an extremely special location for tourists. They visit the Basilica to admire the architectural structure. The architecture resonates with the classic Gothic architecture that can be seen in many Roman countries. The ancient Roman culture amidst all the Indian buildings adds a special charm to it. The Church is approximately 500 years old and has a rich history, all of which began with the Portuguese settlement in southern parts of India in 1500. To express a sort of gratitude, the King of Cochin granted Portuguese viceroy, Dom Franciso de Almeida, the permission to have the Church built. Later, in 1558, the Church was exalted to the status of a cathedral. As of today, it is one of the 8 limited basilicas in the country. It is open to tourists from 9 am to 1pm and then from 3 pm to 5 pm. The best season to go to the Santa Cruz Basilica is from October to March. It is one of the celebrated locations in Kochi and a must-visit too.
