About Kurisumala and the Way of the Cross

Kurisumala rises from the tea slopes on the edge of Vagamon and, on a clear morning, it is one of the calmest spots in the high range. The mist rolls in and out, the air stays cool, and the only real sound is the wind. For pilgrims it is a place of devotion; for everyone else it is a short, rewarding climb with long views over the Vagamon valley from the top.

The hill takes its name from the crosses that line the route. Fourteen crosses stand along the path, one for each of the 14 Stations of the Cross, the Way of the Cross that retraces the last day of Jesus. You climb from cross to cross until you reach the summit, where a tall concrete cross and a small church mark the top. Local accounts trace the first cross on the hill to the late 1950s, and the site has drawn pilgrims ever since, most heavily through Lent and on Good Friday.

Kurisumala is sometimes confused with Kurisumala Ashram, a Cistercian monastery in the same high range that was founded in the 1950s and is known for its Indian-Christian style of monastic life. They share a name and a hillside setting, but they are different places with different intents.

The Kurisumala Trek: Route, Distance and Difficulty

The trek begins near the base of the hill outside Vagamon town and follows the marked path of crosses to the top. It is a moderate climb, steep in a few stretches, and most walkers finish the round trip in about an hour or two depending on how long they linger at the top. It is not a technical trek, but the last part is a real uphill, so it suits reasonably fit walkers more than very young children or anyone with knee or heart trouble.

Go at first light if you can. The path is coolest and quietest in the early morning, the mist is at its best, and you beat both the heat and the day crowds. Wear shoes with grip, because the stone steps and the path can be slick, and carry water. In the monsoon the trail gets slippery and leeches appear in the grass, so pick a dry-season morning for the climb.

How to Reach Kurisumala

Kurisumala is reached by road, with a short walk or jeep ride to the base of the hill. The nearest town is Vagamon, about 6 km away; the nearest railway station is Kottayam and the nearest airport is Cochin International. Best Time to Visit and Timings

The best time to visit Kurisumala is October to March, when the monsoon has cleared, the slopes are green and the mornings are cool and dry. This is also when the trek is at its safest and the valley views are at their clearest. If you want the pilgrimage atmosphere, come during Lent or on Good Friday, when thousands walk the Way of the Cross, though expect crowds and a slow climb.

The hill is open through the day, generally from 6 AM to 6 PM, and entry is free. Sunrise and late afternoon are the most pleasant times to walk. Avoid heavy-rain days in the monsoon, June to September, when the path is slippery and the views are lost in cloud.

Tips for Visiting Kurisumala

• Start early. The path is coolest and least crowded in the first light of morning.

• Wear shoes with grip and carry water. The steps can be slick and there is little shade on the climb.

• Skip the climb right after heavy rain. The trail gets slippery and leeches appear in the wet grass.

• Keep it quiet and respectful. This is an active pilgrimage site, not just a viewpoint.

• Carry cash for parking or a local jeep, as card payment is not reliable at the base.

• Pair it with a sunrise at nearby Murugan Para or a sunset at Thangal Para for a full hill morning.

The Summit Church

The church at the top of Kurisumala is the focus of the climb. It draws devotees through Holy Week and the Lenten season, and even outside the pilgrimage it is a quiet place to rest after the walk, with the valley opening out below on a clear day.

Murugan Mala

On the eastern side of the hill sits Murugan Mala, a rock temple to Lord Murugan reached by a short trek. It is a reminder that these hills are shared across faiths, and the naturally carved setting makes it a calm, unhurried stop that pairs well with the Kurisumala climb.
