Enveloped by the Sahya Mountains, Kurisumala Ashram in Kerala is a Trappist Monastery established in 1958 by the bishop of Tiruvalla, Zacharias Mar Athanasios.

Nestled in the midst of lush greenery in a scenic location, Kurisumala Ashram in Kerala is situated on the Erattupetta and Elappara road, and it is one of the most renowned tourist destinations in the world. Nestled at the foot of Kurisumala, which lies around 4000 feet above the sea level, this ashram is a community of spiritual souls who have dedicated their lives to the Almighty.

Being a popular attraction flocked by people from all around the world, it is also considered as one of Kerala’s best pilgrim centres, where devotees from the Christian community come to seek blessings and peace while observing meditation.

History of Kurisumala Ashram

The founder of this ashram, Francis Acharya (earlier John Mahieu), was Belgian by birth but he accepted the invitation of Zacharias Mar Athanasios in response to the divine call. With him, Fr. Bede Griffiths, the co-founder of this ashram, also joined. Altogether, they established the Kurisumala Ashram on 3rd November 1957. They changed the shape of this infertile space into a colorful paradise of gardens, green meadows, and vegetable beds. With passing time, stone buildings were erected along with guest houses and living quarters. Not only this, but they also raised a herd of cows to provide a livelihood for the community and support poor families who had temporary shelters nearby. The efforts of these pioneers for the next ten tears turned out to be fruitful and the meadows of Vagamon were flowing with not only milk but honey also. Besides this, they kept enhancing their spiritual knowledge by indulging in meditation, reading, and prayer every day.

Mitali's 5 days trip to Vagamon

The agent messed up with the hotel booking in Munnar and were trying to portray that I was the cruel person for questioning them on why the booking was not done even after extra payment for the desired room. The hotel that was provided last minute did not have a proper food options and as i was travelling with senior citizen parents it caused a lot of problem as the property was in the interior. Yet i was being portrayed as cruel for raising my voice against this issue

Rakshaupadhyay's 6 days trip to Vagamon

I booked my trip from Book It forget it. The overall experience was fine. But, few things needs to be improved. Their coordination with the hotel reservation managers was not up to the mark. I made a special request for cleaning the rooms which were not followed in 2 hotels out of 4. Hotels were also okay not best.

Dhruv's 7 days trip to Vagamon

Had a great experience and very good trip. Everything booked and planned as per the final itinerary. Our drive was very good and humble but Kerala being a more of wild natural place so he could have been more adventurous. Saying this bcos we wanted to go to Top Station in munaar to see sunset or sunrise and hotel staff and other drivers suggested that it’s very safe route but our driver told it’s dangerous bcos of elephant presence on the route and he won’t go and so we have to drop that location. Also driver should be more enthusiastic and suggest good shopping (spices etc) and other hidden gems rather he was more interested in taking us to shopping and activities where I think the commission was arranged. But other than this he covered all the places in itinerary and was very polite through out the trip. Had a great trip and lot of memories.
