About Adam's Bridge In Rameshwaram
Adam’s Bridge also known as Rama Setu is almost a 50 km long and 3 km wide boardwalk, which separates the Gulf of Mannar from the Palk Strait. The bridge is set amidst natural setting that leaves visitors spellbound. Adam’s Bridge begins from Dhanushkodi and ends at the Mannar Island of Sri Lanka. In 1480, the bridge was hit by a cyclone, consequently submerging most its parts. At present, 3 – 30 feet bridge is submerged and of no use. Rameshwaram’s Adam’s Bridge is stationed at a distance of just a few meters from Dhanushkodi - the town’s last tip.
Built of limestone shoals, Adam’s Bridge connects Pamban Island near Rameshwaram of Tamil Nadu to the Mannar Island of Sri Lanka. It is mainly a chain of coral reefs and sandbanks, wrapped by a soothing aura, which imparts a relaxing experience to visitors. Some of the sandbanks are dry and the sea around the area is very shallow. Sri Lankans often believe that the Adam's Bridge to Sri Lanka was constructed by Ravana, using floating rocks made of weightless corals to reach India whenever he wanted. Adam's Bridge in Islam derived its name from an Islamic legend that states Adam used this bridge to reach "Adam's Peak" in Sri Lanka by treading on Adam's Bridge floating rocks.
It is believed that the bridge was built by Lord Rama’s vanara army to reach Sri Lanka for rescuing Sita from Ravana. People opine that stones float in water as the name of Lord Rama was written on these. However, Adam’s Bridge truth according to science is that these stones were just shells of silica that had air trapped inside, making them light and float on water. An American science channel in December 2017, claimed that the bridge is man-made that connects India and Sri Lanka. This Adam's Bridge video offered several hints about the bridge’s origin with quite a few scientists and archaeologists believing it to be man-made. The show has used satellite Adam's Bridge images from NASA and quotes scientists and geologists from Indiana University Northwest, University of Colorado Boulder as well as Southern Oregon University.
