About Dhanushkodi In Rameshwaram
Tucked at the south eastern tip of Pamban Island, Dhanushkodi is a small town, which is frozen in time since the disastrous cyclone hit it in 1964. It is the land border between Sri Lanka and India. Once a town, teeming with all facilities, Dhanushkodi in Rameshwaram is now just a sandy shoreline with Bay of Bengal on one side and Indian Ocean on other side. Its ruins date back to the days when it was populated and prosperous. One of the smallest towns of the world, Dhanushkodi redefines the term isolated.
Dhanuskodi history hails from Ramayana that states this is the place, where Lord Rama with Lord Hanumana built a bridge known as Dhanushkodi Ram Setu or Adam’s Bridge to reach Sri Lanka and rescue his wife Goddess Sita from Ravana. Once victorious, Lord Rama crowned Vibhishana, brother of Ravana, as the King of Lanka. Vibhishana later asked the Lord to destroy the bridge. So, Lord Rama broke the bridge with an end of his bow, thus the name - Dhanushkodi, which means ‘end of the bow’. Devotees visit its once grand Dhanushkodi temple, which withstood the massive destructive waves of the cyclone.
Numerous years after the disaster, Dhanushkodi India narrates the tale and prove its existence. As natural calamity turned a serene place into a haunted spot, State Government declared it as Dhanushkodi ghost town. Post cyclone, people who occasionally visit here state that they have heard some weird noises and experienced some strange incidents. These Dhanushkodi ghost stories prohibit people to that visit the place, especially at after dark. Dhanushkodi tourism has gained momentum recently, as people are interested to explore the haunting charm of this isolated place. In addition, Dhanushkodi Beach is considered as one of the most beautiful sites of the town, coming up among the must visit Dhanushkodi tourist places and escalating its importance. It makes for an enthralling landscape, owing to the endless blue waters of the ocean. The location of this beach is a visual treat and an ideal spot for fun-filled times, relaxation, watching sunsets, and landscape photography.
