Scuba Diving In Phuket

Scuba Diving In Phuket, Thailand

Experience the best of marine life with Scuba Diving in Phuket

Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6534 reviews )

Scuba diving in Phuket is the best-value gateway to the Andaman Sea, and unlike the greener Gulf side, it puts world-class reefs, a famous shipwreck and even whale-shark territory within a day boat's reach. A beginner can take a first breath underwater on a Discover Scuba dive from about 2,500 Baht (Rs 7,125) with no licence and no need to swim well, while certified divers can run two or three dives a day over the King Cruiser Wreck, Shark Point and the Racha islands. The best diving runs November to April, when the Andaman clears to 15 to 30 m visibility. This guide covers every major dive site, what you will see, the courses, honest prices in Baht and Rupees, and the best time to go.

Scuba Diving in Phuket: Quick Takeaways

• Beginners can dive with no licence on a Discover Scuba try dive from about 2,500 Baht (Rs 7,125); you do not need to swim well.

• The marquee sites are the King Cruiser Wreck, Shark Point, Anemone Reef and the Racha islands (Racha Yai for beginners, Racha Noi for advanced divers).

• Day boats also reach the far southern sites Hin Daeng and Hin Muang for the best shot at manta rays and whale sharks, February to May.

• Certified divers pay from about 3,900 Baht (Rs 11,115) for a two-to-three-dive day trip; a full PADI Open Water course runs about 10,900 to 14,900 Baht.

• Dive November to April for calm seas and 15 to 30 m visibility; the Andaman warms to 28 to 30 C all year.

Is Scuba Diving in Phuket Worth It?

Yes, and it is the strongest all-round diving in Thailand for a short trip. Phuket sits on the Andaman coast, so the water is clearer and the sites are more varied than the Gulf side around Pattaya. In a single day boat you can dive a shipwreck, a shark-patrolled pinnacle and a shallow beginner reef, then be back at your hotel for dinner. First-timers are welcome everywhere, the shops handle nervous beginners every day, and the same waters run north to the Similan Islands, some of the most celebrated diving in Asia.

Be realistic about two things. The Similan and Richelieu Rock trips that top every diver's list are liveaboard or long day-boat runs from Phuket, not quick dips, and the very best big-animal visibility is a February to May window. On an ordinary day-boat morning to the Racha islands you will still get warm, clear water and healthy reef, just not the once-in-a-lifetime shots. If you want the full Andaman experience, plan a Similan Islands day or liveaboard; if you just want to try diving on a Phuket holiday, a Racha or Coral Island half-day is perfect. Pair it with island hopping and you have a full day on the water.

 At a glance:

What The short answer
Best time November to April (peak visibility February to March)
Beginner-friendly Yes. Discover Scuba needs no licence and no strong swimming
Price band Try dive from ~2,500 B (Rs 7,125); 2 to 3 fun dives from ~3,900 B (Rs 11,115)
Signature sites King Cruiser Wreck, Shark Point, Anemone Reef, Racha Yai and Noi
Big-animal sites Hin Daeng / Hin Muang and Richelieu Rock (manta, whale shark), Feb to May
Water temperature About 28 to 30 C all year, a shorty wetsuit is plenty

Best Dive Sites in Phuket

Phuket's dive sites fall into three rings: the day-boat sites off the south coast (the Racha islands, Shark Point, Anemone Reef and the King Cruiser Wreck), the shore and near reefs around Kata for training, and the far southern and northern sites (Hin Daeng, Hin Muang, the Similans and Richelieu Rock) that need a long day boat or a liveaboard. Here are the ones worth planning a dive around.

King Cruiser Wreck

The single most-dived wreck in the Andaman and the site most Phuket operators build a trip around. This 85 m passenger ferry sank in 1997 between Anemone Reef and Shark Point and now sits upright in about 18 to 30 m, wrapped in soft coral and swarmed by schooling snapper and barracuda. It is deep, so shops want you Advanced Open Water certified, but experienced Open Water divers dive the shallower top deck with a guide. Strong currents are common, which is exactly why the fish life is so dense.

Shark Point (Hin Musang)

A line of limestone pinnacles about 20 minutes from the King Cruiser, and the best reef dive in the day-boat range. The name comes from the leopard sharks that rest on the sand between the rocks, harmless and unbothered by divers. Depths run from 5 m on top of the pinnacles to about 25 m at the base, so it suits both new and experienced divers, and the soft coral here is some of the healthiest close to Phuket. Expect seahorses, moray eels and clouds of glassfish.

Anemone Reef (Hin Jom)

A submerged pinnacle right next to the King Cruiser, its top at about 5 m and its base at 25 m, carpeted in the anemones and clownfish it is named for. Because it is fully underwater with no island to mark it, it feels like an open-water pinnacle and gathers big schools of fish and the occasional leopard shark. It pairs naturally with the wreck and Shark Point on a three-dive day.

Racha Yai

The beginner and course island, about an hour south of Phuket by speedboat. Racha Yai has sheltered, sandy-bottomed bays with easy 5 to 25 m dives, calm conditions and visibility that is often the best near Phuket, which is why most Discover Scuba dives and Open Water courses run here. Turtles are a common sight and there is a small sunk boat wreck for early wreck experience.

Racha Noi

Racha Yai's wilder sister further south, for certified divers only. The terrain is bigger, deeper and more exposed, with granite boulders dropping past 40 m and stronger currents, and it holds the best chance in the day-boat range of manta rays and, in season, a passing whale shark. Dive it after you have a few Racha Yai dives under your belt.

Kata Reef and the shore dives

Right off Kata Beach on the west coast, this is the shallow, shore-accessible reef where a lot of first dives and refreshers happen. Depths are gentle at 4 to 12 m, there is no boat ride, and it is full of macro life: nudibranchs, ghost pipefish, seahorses and the occasional frogfish. It is the easy, cheap option when the sea further out is up.

Koh Dok Mai

A sheer limestone wall dive, sometimes called Flower Island, on the way to Shark Point. One side drops from the surface to about 30 m in a single face covered in soft coral, sea fans and moray eels, with banded sea snakes and the odd leopard shark. The wall makes it a favourite for divers who like drift dives and photography.

Day-trip and liveaboard sites: Hin Daeng, Hin Muang, Similan, Richelieu Rock

The world-class sites sit further out. Hin Daeng and Hin Muang, far to the south, are twin pinnacles with Thailand's deepest wall and the best manta-ray and whale-shark odds between February and May (these are the sites the live page's 'Hin Daeng and Hin Muang' name-drop actually refers to). To the north, the Similan Islands and Richelieu Rock are the Andaman's headline diving, reachable on a long day boat or, better, a two-to-four-day liveaboard. The Similan marine park is seasonal, open roughly mid-October to mid-May, so plan these around the dry months. Racha Yai and Noi round out the day-boat options closer to home.

Dive site Type Depth Level
King Cruiser Wreck Wreck 18 to 30 m Advanced (Open Water on top deck)
Shark Point (Hin Musang) Reef pinnacle 5 to 25 m All levels
Anemone Reef Pinnacle 5 to 25 m Open Water and up
Racha Yai Reef bays 5 to 25 m Beginner, courses
Racha Noi Boulders / drift 10 to 40 m Advanced
Kata Reef / shore Shore reef 4 to 12 m Beginner, macro
Koh Dok Mai Wall 5 to 30 m Open Water and up
Hin Daeng / Hin Muang Deep pinnacle 5 to 40 m Advanced, big animals
Similan / Richelieu Rock Reef / liveaboard 5 to 40 m All levels (long trip)

What You Will See Underwater in Phuket

The Andaman side is why divers choose Phuket over the Gulf: the reefs are richer and the big-animal odds are real. On an ordinary day-boat dive at Shark Point or the Racha islands you will swim over hard and soft coral busy with clownfish in their anemones, angelfish, parrotfish, barracuda and schools of snapper, with moray eels tucked in the rock and leopard sharks resting on the sand. Look closer and the macro life appears: seahorses, ghost pipefish, harlequin shrimp, nudibranchs and frogfish that the guides are expert at spotting.

The headline animals need the right site and season. Green and hawksbill turtles are common year-round at Racha Yai and Koh Dok Mai. Manta rays cruise Racha Noi and, more reliably, Hin Daeng and Hin Muang, and Phuket sits on one of Asia's better whale-shark routes, with sightings peaking February to May at those southern pinnacles and Richelieu Rock. Blacktip reef sharks patrol the shallows and are harmless to divers. It is a genuinely rich underwater world, and even a single try dive usually turns up a turtle or a reef shark.

Scuba Diving Courses in Phuket: Discover Scuba vs PADI Open Water

Which option you book comes down to one question: are you certified? There are three routes, and Phuket is one of the cheapest and most pleasant places in the world to start.

Discover Scuba Diving, the try dive, is for people with no licence and no experience. An instructor briefs you in shallow water, then takes you down to about 6 to 12 m staying within arm's reach the whole time. There is no exam, you do not need to swim well, and it is the single most-booked option in Phuket, usually run in the calm bays of Racha Yai or off Kata. It is the reason so many divers took their first breath underwater here.

A fun dive is for divers who already hold a certification. You show your card, join a two or three-dive day boat, and dive the reefs and wrecks with a guide but without an instructor holding on. It is the cheapest way to dive per tank once you are qualified, and the way to reach the King Cruiser Wreck and the far sites.

The PADI Open Water course is the full three-to-four-day certification that lets you dive anywhere in the world afterwards. Racha Yai's sheltered, shallow water makes Phuket an ideal place to earn it. If you already hold Open Water, the Advanced Open Water course here unlocks the deeper wreck and pinnacle dives like the King Cruiser and Racha Noi.

You are... Book this Roughly
A total beginner, no licence Discover Scuba Diving (try dive) Half to full day, 1 to 2 dives
Certified (Open Water+) Fun dive day trip, 2 to 3 dives Full day boat
Want a licence for life PADI Open Water course 3 to 4 days
Certified, want the deep sites Advanced Open Water course 2 days

Scuba Diving in Phuket Prices

Prices depend on which route you pick and whether gear, lunch and hotel transfer are bundled. Below are typical 2026 rates in both Baht and Rupees, because no rival dive page prices these in Rupees and that is the number an Indian traveller actually wants.

Option Who it is for Cost (Baht) Cost (Rupees, approx)
Discover Scuba (try dive, no licence) First-timers 2,500 to 4,900 B Rs 7,125 to 13,965
Fun dive day trip (2 to 3 dives, boat) Certified divers 3,900 to 4,400 B Rs 11,115 to 12,540
Similan / far-site day boat (2 dives) Certified divers from ~4,900 B from ~Rs 13,965
PADI Open Water course (3 to 4 days) New certification 10,900 to 14,900 B Rs 31,065 to 42,465

Rupee figures use 1 Baht to about 2.85 Rupees (August 2026) and are a guide only. Day-trip rates usually include tanks, weights, guide, lunch and hotel pickup on Phuket; Similan and liveaboard trips and full gear rental sit at the top of each range. National-park fees for the Similans and the Racha area are charged on top.

For the full operator-by-operator fare list, including park fees, see the scuba diving entry fees tab.

Best Time to Dive in Phuket

Dive Phuket between November and April, the Andaman dry season, when the sea is calm, boats run every day and visibility climbs to 15 to 30 m, with the clearest water and the best big-animal action in the February to March peak. Water stays warm all year at about 28 to 30 C, so a 3 mm shorty is plenty. The Similan National Park is only open in this window, roughly mid-October to mid-May, so any Similan or Richelieu Rock trip has to be planned around it.

From May to October the southwest monsoon brings wind and swell to the west coast; day boats still run to the sheltered Racha islands and Kata on calm mornings, but the far sites close and visibility drops. If you are diving in the green season, book a morning boat and keep a spare day in case the sea is up. For the wider seasonal picture, see the best time to visit Phuket guide.

How to Reach the Dive Sites

Almost every Phuket dive trip starts with a hotel pickup and a short drive to Chalong Pier on the south of the island, the main departure point for dive boats. Most operators include this transfer in the price. From Chalong, a speedboat reaches Shark Point, Anemone Reef and the King Cruiser Wreck in about 45 minutes to an hour, and the Racha islands in around an hour. Hin Daeng, Hin Muang and the Similans are much further: those run as long day boats or, better, multi-day liveaboards that leave from Chalong or from Khao Lak to the north. If you are flying in, see how to reach Phuket for airport and transfer details. Book dives for the start of your trip so a rough-sea day still leaves room to reschedule.

Is It Safe? Operators, Insurance and Our Dive-Desk Tips

Scuba diving in Phuket is beginner-safe when you book a proper PADI or SSI dive shop, and that qualifier matters more than the activity itself. Standards vary between operators, so pick one that is PADI or SSI affiliated, checks your gear in front of you, keeps small groups per guide, carries oxygen and a first-aid kit on the boat, and does not rush the briefing. On a Discover Scuba dive an instructor stays within arm's reach the whole time, you breathe through a regulator the shop maintains, and you never go deeper than your training allows. A short medical form is standard, and travel insurance that explicitly covers recreational scuba is worth having.

You do not need to be a strong swimmer for a shallow reef try dive, though basic comfort in water helps you relax. Never dive and fly on the same day: leave at least 18 to 24 hours between your last dive and a flight to avoid decompression risk, which matters when you are catching a flight home. If you have a heart or lung condition, a recent surgery, or you are pregnant, sit this one out and get a doctor's clearance first.

"Do the King Cruiser and Shark Point as a three-dive day out of Chalong, and dive the wreck first while everyone is fresh, the current picks up by late morning. For a first-ever dive, ask for Racha Yai, the bays there are the calmest water near Phuket," says our TravelTriangle Thailand desk team.

Plan Your Phuket Diving Trip

Scuba diving is best built into a full day on the water. Pair it with island hopping or a Similan Islands day for the non-divers in your group, and for beginner spots, cheap dives and first-hand trip notes, read our full guide to scuba diving in Phuket. The check-in process was seamless. The accommodation itself was beyond my expectations.I really love the swimming pool and the buffet breakfast. Beyond the hotel, the itinerary you crafted for us was diverse and captivating. From exploring the bustling streets of Bangkok to immersing myself in the natural wonders of Phuket, every destination left an indelible mark on my heart. I will undoubtedly recommend your travel agency to my friends, family, and colleagues who are seeking an extraordinary travel experience. Your attention to detail, professionalism, and commitment to customer satisfaction are truly commendable. Once again, thank you for making my Thailand trip so special. Like we had a bangkok city tour in our package but reclining budha/watarun temple was not part of it. Better to have it included in basic packages which would improve customer satisfaction. But overall it was a good and hustle free experience.

For the first time we booked our trip with travel triangle. Initially we were reluctant booking with them because we hadn't heard the name but everything went really well. Mr.Yugal Senani always replied to all our queries. We'll definitely recommend them to everyone.

    Phuket Travel FAQs

Is scuba diving in Phuket worth it?

Yes. Phuket has the best all-round diving in Thailand for a short trip, on the clearer Andaman coast. In a single day boat you can dive the King Cruiser Wreck, the shark-patrolled Shark Point and a shallow beginner reef, and the same waters reach the world-class Similan Islands. It welcomes complete beginners and rewards certified divers, so it earns the day for almost anyone.

How much does scuba diving in Phuket cost in rupees?

A Discover Scuba try dive for first-timers runs about 2,500 to 4,900 Baht (Rs 7,125 to 13,965). A two-to-three-dive fun-dive day trip for certified divers is about 3,900 to 4,400 Baht (Rs 11,115 to 12,540), and a full PADI Open Water course is about 10,900 to 14,900 Baht (Rs 31,065 to 42,465). Most day rates include tanks, guide, lunch and hotel pickup; national-park fees for the Similans and Racha are extra. Figures use 1 Baht to about 2.85 Rupees.

Can beginners scuba dive in Phuket without a licence?

Yes. The Discover Scuba Diving programme is built for people with no certification and no experience. An instructor briefs you in shallow water and stays within arm's reach the whole dive, taking you to about 6 to 12 m in the calm bays of Racha Yai or off Kata. There is no exam. It is the most-booked dive in Phuket precisely because anyone reasonably healthy can do it.

Do I need to know swimming to scuba dive in Phuket?

Not for a shallow reef try dive. Instructors take complete beginners who cannot swim well, controlling your depth and staying beside you, so basic comfort in the water is enough. For the full PADI Open Water certification you do need to pass a light water test, usually a 200 m swim and a 10-minute float, which the course itself prepares you for.

What are the best dive sites in Phuket?

The day-boat favourites are the King Cruiser Wreck, Shark Point (Hin Musang), Anemone Reef and the Racha islands, Racha Yai for beginners and Racha Noi for advanced divers. Koh Dok Mai is a fine wall dive and Kata Reef is the easy shore option. For world-class diving, the far southern Hin Daeng and Hin Muang and the northern Similan Islands and Richelieu Rock are the headline trips, reached by long day boat or liveaboard.

What is the best time of year to dive in Phuket?

November to April, the Andaman dry season, when the sea is calm, boats run daily and visibility reaches 15 to 30 m. The clearest water and the best manta and whale-shark odds come in the February to March peak. Water stays warm at about 28 to 30 C all year. The Similan National Park is only open roughly mid-October to mid-May, so plan Similan trips in that window.

What will I see scuba diving in Phuket?

On a typical dive, expect hard and soft coral, clownfish, angelfish, parrotfish, barracuda, moray eels, and leopard sharks resting on the sand, plus macro life like seahorses, ghost pipefish and nudibranchs. Turtles are common at Racha Yai and Koh Dok Mai. Manta rays and, in season, whale sharks show up at Racha Noi, Hin Daeng, Hin Muang and Richelieu Rock, mainly February to May. Reef sharks in the shallows are harmless to divers.

Is scuba diving in Phuket safe?

It is beginner-safe when you book a reputable PADI or SSI shop. On a try dive an instructor stays with you throughout, the reef sites are shallow, and the boats carry oxygen and first aid. Standards vary between operators, so choose one with well-maintained gear, small groups and an unhurried briefing. Fill in the medical form honestly, take insurance that covers scuba, and leave 18 to 24 hours between your last dive and a flight.

How deep will I go, and how long is a dive?

Recreational divers stay within the 40 m (about 130 ft) limit, and beginners on a try dive only go to about 6 to 12 m. A single dive lasts roughly 30 to 60 minutes depending on your depth and air use, and a day boat usually gives you two or three dives with a surface break between them. The deeper wreck and pinnacle dives, like the King Cruiser and Racha Noi, need an Advanced certification.
