Lard Yai: the Sunday Walking Street in Old Town

Lard Yai runs one evening a week, Sunday, from about 4 pm to 10 pm, and it is the market to see if you only have time for one. It takes over Thalang Road in the heart of Phuket Old Town, so the backdrop is the row of restored Sino-Portuguese shophouses in mustard, pink and pale blue that the town is known for. Stalls line both sides of the pedestrianised street for a few hundred metres.

Come for the food and the setting rather than shopping in bulk. You will find moo ping (grilled pork skewers), roti, mango sticky rice, fresh coconut ice cream and O-aew, a shaved-ice dessert that is a Phuket original. Between bites there are handmade soaps, prints, phone cases and small souvenirs from local sellers, plus buskers along the road. Get there by 5 pm if you want to walk it before the crowd thickens. Naka Market (the Phuket Weekend Market)

The Naka Market, which most people just call the Weekend Market, is the biggest of the lot. It opens Saturday and Sunday evenings, from about 4 pm to 10 pm, on Wirat Hong Yok Road near Central Festival on the edge of Phuket Town. Locals often compare it to Bangkok's Chatuchak, and the comparison holds: hundreds of stalls, tight lanes, and a bit of everything.

This is where you shop rather than sightsee. Racks of T-shirts and beachwear, phone accessories, secondhand gadgets, toys, homeware and knock-about souvenirs go for a few hundred baht, and the volume means you can compare prices two stalls apart. The food court at the back does grilled seafood, pad thai, Hokkien noodles and cheap Thai milk tea. It gets hot and busy, so go early in the evening, carry cash in small notes, and agree a price before you hand anything over. If you want to buy gifts in bulk for people back home, this is the market to prioritise.

Chillva Market

Chillva is the market locals in their twenties actually hang out at, and it feels different from the tourist-facing ones. It sits on Yaowarat Road in Phuket Town and is built from stacked shipping containers painted in blocks of colour, with a covered food zone in the middle and small boutiques around the edge. It runs Monday to Saturday evenings from about 5 pm and is closed on Sunday, so plan your visit for a weekday or Saturday.

Come for dinner and the atmosphere more than shopping. The food stalls lean modern Thai and Korean-Thai, there is usually live acoustic music at the weekend, and the container bars make it an easy place to sit for a couple of hours rather than walk through. Clothes here skew to young local labels and streetwear rather than souvenirs. It is a short Grab ride from Old Town. More Phuket night markets worth an evening

If you are staying more than a few days, or you are based away from Old Town, these are the ones to know.

Malin Plaza, Patong

The handiest option if you are sleeping in Patong. Malin Plaza sits just off Rat-U-Thit Road and runs most evenings from around 5 pm. It is compact and food-first: grilled seafood, satay, pancakes and fruit shakes, plus a few clothing and souvenir stalls. Good for a cheap dinner before a night out rather than a shopping trip.

Banzaan Night Market, Patong

Behind the Banzaan fresh market near Jungceylon, this one is built around cook-to-order seafood. You pick prawns, fish or squid from the ice, and a stall grills or fries it while you wait. It runs most evenings. It is the best-value seafood dinner in Patong if you do not mind plastic chairs.

Kata Night Market

A small weekly market for anyone based on the south-west coast around Kata and Karon, saving you the trip into town. Expect a tight run of food stalls and a handful of souvenir sellers. Confirm the day locally, as it is smaller and the schedule moves.

Fun Friday at Boat Avenue, Bang Tao

The market for the upscale north of the island around Laguna and Bang Tao. Held on Friday evenings along Boat Avenue in Cherngtalay, it leans toward food trucks, craft stalls and a more polished crowd than the town markets. Worth it if you are staying north and do not want to drive 40 minutes into Phuket Town.

Phuket Indy Market

A small Old Town market on Wednesday to Friday evenings, from about 4 pm to 10 pm, around Dibuk Road and Limelight Avenue. Indy is the one for handmade crafts, prints, jewellery and young Thai designers rather than mass souvenirs. Pair it with dinner in Old Town.

Which Phuket night market should you pick?

Most visitors only have one or two free evenings, so match the market to what you actually want.

• For the best single evening: Lard Yai on Sunday. Food, Old Town setting and a bit of shopping in one walk.

• For serious souvenir and gift shopping: Naka Weekend Market. The most stalls and the sharpest prices.

• For a relaxed dinner with atmosphere: Chillva. Sit, eat, listen to live music, skip the hard shopping.

• If you are stuck in Patong: Malin Plaza for a quick dinner, Banzaan for fresh seafood.

• If you are staying north (Bang Tao/Laguna): Fun Friday at Boat Avenue on a Friday.

One planning note that catches people out: the two flagship markets, Lard Yai and Naka, are weekend-only. If your Phuket days fall midweek, build your evening around Chillva, Malin Plaza or Indy instead, and do not count on Lard Yai unless you are here on a Sunday.

What to eat and what to buy

Eat first. The reason to come to a Phuket night market is dinner, and it is cheap: two people can eat well for 300 to 500 baht, which is roughly Rs 870 to Rs 1,450 at about Rs 2.89 to the baht. Start with moo ping (grilled pork skewers, 10 to 15 baht each), then work through pad thai, Hokkien mee noodles, grilled seafood, and roti or mango sticky rice for dessert. Chase it with iced Thai milk tea. At Lard Yai, hunt down O-aew, the shaved-ice dessert unique to Phuket.

For buying, the rule is simple. Food and drink are fixed low prices, so no haggling. On clothes, souvenirs, bags and accessories, the first price is a starting point. A friendly counter-offer of around two-thirds, settling somewhere in the middle, is normal, and it works better if you are buying more than one thing. Carry 1,000 to 2,000 baht in cash per person for an evening (about Rs 2,900 to Rs 5,800). Most food stalls and small sellers are cash only, notes are easier than coins, and while a few larger stalls take QR payment, do not rely on cards.

Best time to go and how to get around

Aim to arrive between 5 pm and 6 pm. You get the stalls fully set up, cooler air, and space to walk before the after-dinner crush from about 7:30 pm. The markets run through the cool, dry season (November to February) at their busiest and stay open year round; during the May to October green season an occasional evening downpour can thin things out, so keep the plan flexible.

Getting there is easiest with Grab, Thailand's ride app, which gives you a fixed fare up front and saves the tuk-tuk negotiation. From Patong to Phuket Town markets (Chillva, Lard Yai, Naka) budget around 300 to 400 baht one way and 30 to 40 minutes. Metered taxis and tuk-tuks work too, but agree the price before you get in. Is a Phuket night-market tour worth it, and how to plan it

Yes, and it is one of the cheapest evenings you will spend in Phuket. You are not paying an entry fee, dinner costs a few hundred baht, and even if you buy nothing you have seen the local side of the island. The only real cost is choosing the right market for the night you are free, which is what the sections above are for.

You do not need a booked "night market tour" to do this; the markets are free to walk into and easy to reach by Grab. Where a package earns its keep is the rest of the trip.
