Koh Panyee stilt village

A Muslim fishing village built entirely on stilts against a limestone cliff, home to a few hundred families and famous for its floating football pitch, which the local kids built themselves after the 1986 World Cup. Most tours stop here for a seafood lunch. It is touristy at midday, but the setting, a whole community over the water with a mosque and a school, is unlike anywhere else in the bay.

The hongs and Koh Panak sea caves

This is the part people remember. Hongs, from the Thai word for room, are hidden lagoons sealed inside the islands, reachable only by paddling a low canoe through a dark sea cave at the right tide. Koh Panak and Koh Hong are the usual venues. Inside, you float in a quiet, cliff-walled pool of mangrove and hanging vines while the noise of the boats disappears. Samet Nangshe viewpoint and Wat Suwan Khuha

The bay is at its best from mid-November to April, the dry season, when the water is calm and clear and the sea-cave canoeing is easiest. December and January bring the cleanest visibility and the biggest crowds. May to October is the green season: expect afternoon showers and choppier open water, though the bay itself stays sheltered, so tours generally run year round. Whatever the month, take the earliest departure you can. By late morning the fleet converges on James Bond Island and the Koh Panyee jetty, and the caves are quieter, cooler and better lit before the crowds arrive.

A standard day tour runs to a familiar shape, so you can picture the day before you book. Pickup is early, around 07:30 to 08:00, for the drive to the marina. From there a speedboat crosses to the first hong for the canoe leg, usually the quietest and best part of the morning. Phang Nga Bay vs Phi Phi: Which to Choose

Most Phuket visitors have time for one big island day and end up choosing between Phang Nga Bay and the Phi Phi Islands. They are not the same trip. Phang Nga is about limestone scenery, sheltered water and sea caves; Phi Phi is about beaches, snorkelling and open-water swimming, with a rougher, busier crossing.
