Places to Visit in Chail

Chail is small enough to cover in two unhurried days. These are the stops most of our travellers build their itinerary around.

1. Chail Palace

The Palace is the reason most people put Chail on the map. Built by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala as his summer residence, it stands in about 75 acres of gardens and orchards and now runs as a heritage hotel, so you can walk the grounds or stay the night in a cottage on the estate. 2. Cricket Ground

Chail's cricket ground was laid out in 1893 by the same Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, and at about 2,444 metres it is one of the highest cricket and polo grounds in the world. It sits above the town with clear valley views, and polo and other games are still played here. It is a short, worthwhile stop on any Chail tour package.

3. Chail Wildlife Sanctuary

Spread over roughly 110 sq km, the Chail Wildlife Sanctuary was set up in 1976 and protects a good stretch of deodar forest and its wildlife. 4. Kali Ka Tibba

Sitting on one of the highest ridges around Chail, the Kali Ka Tibba temple is dedicated to Kali Devi and draws a steady stream of visitors. Come for the sunset: the temple looks out over the deodar slopes and the light here is what most people remember from the trip.

5. Sidh Baba Ka Mandir

Local lore says Maharaja Bhupinder Singh planned his palace on this very spot until a sadhu appeared in his dream and told him it was a place of meditation. The king moved his palace elsewhere and built this temple instead, and it still draws worshippers from the surrounding villages. Nearby, the little riverside spot at Sadhupul, with its cafe over the stream, is an easy add-on for an hour.

Things to Do in Chail

Chail rewards a slower pace, but there is more to do than sightseeing if you want it.

• Camping. Camp overnight in the forest. Snow Trails is the best-known camp near Chail, and Boparai and Barog also run tents through the season, most with bonfires and simple meals included.

• Trekking. Walk the short trails. The Chail-to-Gaura and Chail-to-Jhajjar routes are the two treks travellers ask for most, both doable in a day at an easy-to-moderate grade.

• Adventure. Try paragliding and other adventure add-ons. Paragliding, rope activities and nature walks can be booked locally in the drier months. Ask your agent to fold them into the itinerary.

Best Time to Visit Chail

Winter (December to February) - for snow

Winter is peak Chail for a reason. Snowfall is common through December, January and February, and the palace grounds, Kali Ka Tibba and the surrounding forest all turn white. Summer (March to June) - for pleasant weather

Summer days sit around a comfortable 20 degrees, cool and breezy while the plains bake. This is the easiest time for camping, the short treks and long walks in the palace gardens, and the best window for a relaxed honeymoon.

Monsoon (July to September)

The monsoon is quiet and green, with light rain and the forest at its lushest, but the hill roads are prone to landslides in this stretch, so many travellers skip it. If you do come, keep your plans flexible.

How to Reach Chail

Chail is about 45 km from Shimla by road, and both Delhi and Chandigarh are practical starting points.

• By train. The nearest major railhead is Kalka, about 80 km away. From Kalka you can take the heritage toy train up to Shimla and then a taxi to Chail, or a bus/taxi straight up the hill.

• By air. Chandigarh airport (about 85 km) is the practical arrival point. Shimla's small Jubbarhatti airport is closer at roughly 63 km but has very limited flights.

• By road. Chail is about 345 km from Delhi and about 110 km from Chandigarh. A private cab or self-drive up via Solan is the most flexible way in, and it is included in most packages.
