What a Dalhousie Trip Costs for 2 People
The most common question we get is what a Dalhousie trip actually costs for a couple, all in. Here is a realistic per-couple guide for a package that bundles hotel, breakfast, a private cab and sightseeing. It excludes your flights or train to Pathankot. Costs climb in the December snow window and the April to June peak.
| Tier | Duration | Cost for 2 (package) | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | 2N/3D | Rs 16,000 to 20,000 | 3-star hotel, breakfast, cab, Dalhousie town + Khajjiar |
| Standard | 3N/4D | Rs 24,000 to 32,000 | Better 3-star, most meals, wider sightseeing, transfers |
| Premium | 4N/5D | Rs 38,000 to 48,000 | 4-star or resort, all meals, private cab, Chamba add-on |
Want the cheapest workable plan? A 2N/3D weekend from Pathankot keeps the Dalhousie trip cost lowest. For snow, budget a little more: December to February rates run higher and hotels fill early.
10 Best Places to Visit on a Dalhousie Tour
Dalhousie sightseeing clusters around Gandhi Chowk, the town square lined with cafes, a woollens market and old churches, and then fans out to Khajjiar, the Kalatop forest and the Chamera reservoir. Most package itineraries cover a mix of the ten below. The old British-built Mall Road and the quiet Bakrota Hills loop are easy on-foot add-ons from the square, and the 1894-built St. Francis Church at Subhash Chowk sits a short walk from St. John's.
| Place | Best for | Distance from town | Timings | Entry fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Khajjiar | Meadow, mini-Switzerland views | 22.8 km | Open 24 hrs | Free |
| Satdhara Falls | Waterfall, picnic, photos | 3.1 km | Open 24 hrs | Free |
| Panchpula | Waterfall, Ajit Singh memorial | 3.1 km | 9 AM to 7 PM | Free |
| Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary | Deodar forest, trekking, wildlife | 11.5 km | 7 AM to 6 PM | Rs 250 |
| Dainkund (Daikund) Peak | Highest point, 360-degree views | 12.8 km | Open 24 hrs | Free |
| St. John's Church | 150-year-old colonial church | 2 km | 7 AM to 7 PM | Free |
| Chamera Dam / Lake | Boating, Ravi-river reservoir | 35.4 km | 10 AM to 6 PM | Free |
| Garam Sadak | Sunny valley-view walk, photography | 2.7 km | 10 AM to 4 PM | Free |
| Bhuri Singh Museum (Chamba) | Chamba art and heritage | 53.8 km | 10 AM to 5 PM | Nominal |
| Khajjiar Lake | Cedar-ringed lake | 24 km | 10 AM to 5 PM | Free |
Khajjiar
Set at about 6,500 ft and ringed by dense cedar, Khajjiar is the round green meadow that gives Dalhousie its mini-Switzerland tag. You can ride a horse across the saucer of grass, walk out to the small Khajjiar lake, or visit the Golden Devi temple on the rim. It works for couples and families alike, and it is the one stop almost every package includes.
Satdhara Falls
Named for the seven springs that meet here at around 2,036 m, Satdhara sits just 3 km from town in the Chamba valley. The water is clear and cold, the surroundings quiet, and it makes an easy picnic and photo halt on the way to Panchpula.
Panchpula
Panchpula is a stream and waterfall under thick deodar and pine, fed from the north side of Dainkund. A samadhi to the revolutionary Sardar Ajit Singh stands nearby. It is greenest right after the monsoon, and it is one of the more popular short outings from Gandhi Chowk.
Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary
Kalatop, meaning the black-forest cap on the ridge top, protects deodar and oak woods rich in Himalayan wildlife, a short drive from the Chamba dam. Marked trekking and hiking trails run through it, including the 13 km walk that links Kalatop to the Khajjiar meadow. Entry is Rs 250.
Dainkund (Daikund) Peak
At 2,755 m, Dainkund is the highest point around Dalhousie, also called the Singing Hill for the wind through its ridges. From the top you get a 360-degree sweep from the snow of the Pir Panjal to the Dhauladhar, plus a view down to Khajjiar. It is about a 30-minute drive from Gandhi Chowk, then a 20-minute walk from the taxi stand to the Pholani Devi temple on top.
St. John's Church
This Protestant church near the bus stand is over 150 years old and one of Dalhousie's oldest colonial buildings. Deodar trees shade the grounds, and the cool, candle-lit interior is a quiet stop. It is open 7 AM to 7 PM. A short walk away, St. Francis Church at Subhash Chowk (built 1894) is the town's other landmark church.
Chamera Dam and Lake
About 35 km out, the Chamera reservoir on the Ravi River sits at around 1,700 m and is the town's main water source and a boating spot. The Chamera hydel project alongside it is one of Himachal's early hydro-power ventures.
Garam Sadak
Garam Sadak, literally the warm road, catches winter sun that keeps the lane mild while the rest of Dalhousie stays cold. It gives good valley views and is a favourite short walk for street photography.
Bhuri Singh Museum
In Chamba, about 54 km from Dalhousie, this museum holds Pahari miniature paintings, carvings and old weapons. It was set up in 1908 and named after Raja Bhuri Singh, who donated the family collection that traces Chamba's culture.
Khajjiar Lake
The small lake at the heart of Khajjiar takes its name from Khajji Nag, the deity at the temple beside it. Cedar forest rings the water, which sits in a broad grassy hollow. It pairs naturally with the Khajjiar meadow visit.
Best Time to Visit Dalhousie
March to June is the easy pick: mild days, clear pine-and-snow views, and the season families and nature lovers favour. July and August bring heavy monsoon rain and a real landslide risk on the hill roads, so most travellers skip it. Come December to February, fresh snowfall makes Dalhousie a favourite with honeymooners, though you should carry proper warm layers and expect higher hotel rates.
For a month-by-month breakdown of weather, snow and crowds, see our full Dalhousie best time to visit guide. Whichever season you pick, the packages above cover the hotels, transfers and sightseeing so you only plan the dates.
How to Reach Dalhousie
Dalhousie has no airport or railway station of its own, so you reach the nearest hub at Pathankot and cover the last stretch by road. Every TravelTriangle package can include the airport or station transfer.
By Air
The closest airport is Pathankot, about 75 km away and connected mainly to Delhi. The next option is Kangra (Gaggal) airport, roughly 140 km out. From either, take a cab, a bus from Kangra, or the transfer built into your package for the final leg to Dalhousie.
By Train
The nearest railhead is Chakki Bank (Pathankot), about 71 to 84 km from Dalhousie, with express trains from Delhi, Jammu, Jaipur, Bhatinda, Ahmedabad and Jodhpur. From the station, the drive up to Dalhousie takes about 3 hours.
By Road
HRTC and private operators run deluxe, semi-sleeper and AC Volvo buses to Dalhousie from Delhi's Kashmere Gate ISBT and via Pathankot and Chamba. You can also self-drive from Delhi, Chandigarh or nearby cities on well-kept hill roads.
Coming from the capital? Our step-by-step Delhi to Dalhousie guide compares the bus, train and flight routes, and the Dalhousie tour from Delhi packages bundle the transport in.
Where to Stay in Dalhousie
Dalhousie's hotels run from heritage colonial properties near Mall Road to family resorts with valley views. Five reliable options across tiers, with indicative per-night starting rates:
| Hotel | Category | From (per night) | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snow Valley Resorts | 4 star | Rs 3,000 | The Mall, Dalhousie |
| Hotel BrijVilla | 3 star | Rs 5,000 | Silverton Estate, Moti Tiba |
| JK Clarks Exotica | 4 star | Rs 5,000 | Church Ballon Road, near bus stand |
| Fortune Park Dalhousie | 3 star | Rs 7,000 | Near Gandhi Chowk, Subhash Bowli Road |
| Grand View Hotel | 3 star | Rs 7,000 | Dalhousie Club, Moti Tiba |
Your package hotel is picked to match your tier and budget, and you can upgrade or change it before you confirm.
Top Things to Do in Dalhousie
Beyond sightseeing, Dalhousie packs in enough to fill a couple of active days.
• Boating at Chamera Lake (25 km): boating, fishing and rafting on the reservoir, open roughly 7 AM to 5 PM.
• Hiking Dainkund Peak (12.8 km): the town's highest walk, with snow-mountain views and a look down to Khajjiar lake, open about 7 AM to 7 PM.
• Shopping the Tibetan Handicrafts Market at Gandhi Chowk: shawls, scarves and souvenirs at fair rates, open about 10:30 AM to 7:30 PM.
• Trekking Ganji Pahari (6 km): a short, scenic ridge trek; carry your own food and water.
• Subhash Baoli hot spring (1 km): a warm spring named after Subhas Chandra Bose, open about 7 AM to 7 PM.
• Paragliding and zorbing at Khajjiar: a 10-minute paragliding flight runs about Rs 1,500 per person, higher in the March-to-June peak.
Best Food to Eat in Dalhousie
Dalhousie's dining leans multi-cuisine, with a few reliable names around Gandhi Chowk and Moti Tiba:
• Tiffins Restaurant (Grand View Hotel, Moti Tiba): buffet breakfasts and dinners plus Italian, Chinese and continental dishes; a popular lounge and terrace coffee shop.
• Old Sher-e-Punjab Dhaba (Subhash Chowk): authentic Punjabi food, tandoori parathas, Amritsari kulcha, chana masala and buttermilk.
• Kwality Restaurant (Gandhi Chowk): North Indian and Chinese; regulars go for the chilli chicken, saag chicken and sizzlers.
• Lovely Restaurant (Satdhara Road): Indian and international plates with indoor and outdoor seating.
• Manmahesh Rasoi (Panchpula Road, Gandhi Chowk): vegetarian-friendly South Indian, North Indian and Asian dishes at reasonable prices.
Where Is Dalhousie Located
Dalhousie straddles five hills of the Dhauladhar range in the Chamba district of western Himachal Pradesh, near the Jammu and Kashmir border. Its character comes from the misty hills, cool weather and long sunset views, under a cover of oak, fir, spruce and pine. Lord Dalhousie founded it as a hill retreat during the British Raj, and the town has kept that quiet colonial feel.
Making the Most of Your Dalhousie Tour
Dalhousie rewards a slower pace. Shop for woollens and Tibetan handicrafts at the Gandhi Chowk market, eat a hot bowl of noodles near Satdhara Falls, take a boat out on Chamera Lake, and walk an untrodden trail in the Kalatop sanctuary. Keen walkers can do the 13 km forest trail from Kalatop to the Khajjiar meadow to see the region's flora and fauna up close. Pony rides in town and zorbing or paragliding at Khajjiar round out an active day.
Save time for treeless Dainkund, the highest point in Dalhousie, for a 360-degree sweep from the snow of the Pir Panjal to the Dhauladhar. It is about a 30-minute drive from Gandhi Chowk, then a 20-minute walk to the top. Because Dalhousie sits so close to Dharamshala, many travellers club the two, and our Dharamshala, McleodGanj, Khajjiar and Dalhousie tour does exactly that in one trip. It makes Dalhousie an easy alternative for anyone wanting a quieter hill break beyond Dharamshala.
How to Choose Your Dalhousie Package
A quick way to self-select before you ask for a quote:
By purpose: honeymooners get more from the 5N/6D couple plans (see the Dalhousie honeymoon packages); families and groups suit the 4N/5D Dalhousie, Khajjiar and Chamba circuit.
By budget: a 2N/3D weekend from Pathankot keeps costs lowest; add nights and a resort tier for a premium trip.
By duration: 2N/3D covers Dalhousie town plus Khajjiar; 4N/5D adds Kalatop, Chamera and Chamba.
By season: March to June for clear weather, December to February for snow. Full detail in the best time to visit guide.
Tips for Travelling to Dalhousie
• Pack woollens year-round; Dalhousie stays cold even in summer evenings.
• Carry a camera and a power bank; the best viewpoints are a walk from the road.
• Avoid the July-August monsoon window: heavy rain brings landslide risk on the hill roads.
• Keep a photo ID handy; hotels ask for it at check-in.
• Carry basic personal medication (paracetamol, ORS and similar) for the altitude and long drives.
