1. Bangkok

Thailand's capital is where almost every trip begins, and two or three days here go fast. Base yourself near the Chao Phraya River so you can reach Bangkok by longtail boat instead of sitting in traffic. Evenings belong to the rooftop bars, Chinatown's street food on Yaowarat Road, and the sky train out to the malls. Come November to February for the coolest, driest weather.

2. Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew

The walled royal complex is Bangkok's single most visited sight, built in 1782 and still used for state ceremonies. Inside sits the Emerald Buddha, carved from a single block of jade. Entry runs around 500 THB. Go at opening, about 8:30 am, before the tour coaches arrive, and cover your shoulders and knees or you will be turned back at the gate.

3. Wat Pho

A short walk south of the Grand Palace, Wat Pho holds the 46-metre Reclining Buddha and is the home of traditional Thai massage. Tickets are about 300 THB and include a small bottle of water. Set aside an hour for the halls of gilded Buddhas, then book a foot massage at the temple's own school. It is one of the best-value hours you will spend in the city.

4. Wat Arun

The Temple of Dawn sits on the west bank of the river, its central spire covered in tiny pieces of Chinese porcelain that catch the light. Cross on the 5 THB ferry from Tha Tien pier to reach Wat Arun. Entry is around 200 THB. It looks its best in the hour before sunset, and the riverside bars opposite are set up for exactly that view.

5. Chatuchak Weekend Market

One of the largest markets in the world, Chatuchak spreads over 15,000 stalls and only fully opens on Saturday and Sunday. Come early to beat the heat, wear light clothes, and carry cash. You will find everything from vintage denim to potted plants and grilled skewers. Both the MRT and BTS stop at the edge, so it slots neatly into a morning before an afternoon flight north.

6. Chiang Mai

The northern capital trades Bangkok's rush for moated old-town streets, hundreds of temples and cool mountain air. Chiang Mai is the base for ethical elephant sanctuaries, cooking classes and the Sunday Walking Street market. Two nights is the minimum and many travellers stay longer. The high season runs November to February; skip the March burning season, when the air quality drops sharply.

7. Doi Suthep

The gold-covered temple of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep sits on a mountain 15 km above Chiang Mai, reached by a 300-step staircase flanked by two long naga serpents. Entry is about 50 THB. On a clear morning the terrace looks out over the whole city. Charter a red songthaew truck from the old town, or pair it with the nearby Bhubing Palace gardens.

8. Chiang Rai & the White Temple

Two hours north of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai is worth the trip for Wat Rong Khun, the all-white contemporary temple built by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. Entry is around 100 THB for foreign visitors. Pair it with the deep-indigo Blue Temple and the Black House museum, then drive on to the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet on the Mekong.

9. Ayutthaya

The old Siamese capital, an hour north of Bangkok, is a UNESCO World Heritage field of brick temple ruins and the famous Buddha head cradled in tree roots at Wat Mahathat. Rent a bicycle to loop the Ayutthaya historical park, or arrive on a river cruise from Bangkok. Each temple charges a small fee of about 50 THB. 10. Sukhothai Historical Park

Thailand's first capital, founded in the 13th century, is a quieter and older ruin field than Ayutthaya, with lotus-bud spires reflected in still ponds. Thailand's largest island is the main beach gateway in the south, with an airport that takes direct flights and a coastline that runs from the neon of Patong to quiet coves. Use Phuket as a base for Phi Phi and James Bond Island day trips. November to April is the dry season with calm seas; the mid-year monsoon brings cheaper rooms but rougher water and red-flag beaches.

12. Big Buddha & Phuket Old Town

Above Chalong, the 45-metre marble Big Buddha looks out over the south of the island and is free to visit, though a covering wrap is expected. Families often prefer quieter Karon or Kata just to the south. Watch the flags in the May to October monsoon, when rip currents make some days unsafe for swimming.

14. Krabi

On the mainland across from Phuket, Krabi is limestone-cliff country, greener and more laid back. Ao Nang is the main beach town and the springboard for Railay, the Hong Islands and Four Islands boat trips. It is a favourite for honeymoons and calmer family beach time. The dry, clear season runs November to April.

15. Railay Beach

Cut off from the mainland by cliffs and reachable only by longtail boat, Railay feels like an island without being one. West Railay has the soft-sand sunsets, East Railay the mangroves and budget rooms, and the towering karsts draw rock climbers from all over the world. The ten-minute boat from Ao Nang costs about 100 to 150 THB each way.

The Phi Phi group is the postcard Thailand of sheer cliffs and turquoise water, an hour or two by ferry from either Phuket or Krabi. Maya Bay, made famous by the film The Beach, reopened with visitor limits to let the reef recover, so boats no longer anchor inside. In Phang Nga Bay north of Phuket, the needle-thin limestone stack of Khao Phing Kan earned its nickname from a 1974 Bond film. Most people reach it on a day tour that also paddles sea kayaks into the bay's hidden lagoons and hongs. The water here is sheltered and calm, which makes it a gentle option for families and non-swimmers.

18. Similan Islands

This protected archipelago off the Andaman coast has some of the clearest water and best diving in the country, with granite boulders and coral gardens. The park closes each year through the monsoon and reopens roughly mid-October to mid-May, so it is a dry-season trip only. Day tours and liveaboard dive boats leave from Khao Lak and Phuket.

19. Koh Samui

The Gulf's biggest resort island runs on a different weather clock to the west coast: it is often sunniest from July to September, when Phuket is wet. Chaweng and Lamai bring the busy beaches and nightlife, while the north and Bophut's Fisherman's Village stay calmer. Koh Samui has its own airport, so you can fly in direct.

Small, hilly Koh Tao is the cheapest place in Thailand to learn to dive, with dozens of schools running four-day open-water courses at prices hard to beat anywhere. Beyond the reefs, Sairee Beach has the sunset bars and Koh Nang Yuan's sandbar links three islets. Ferries connect it to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan through the day.

23. Pattaya

Two hours by road from Bangkok, Pattaya packs beaches, coral-island day trips and big family attractions into an easy weekend. It is the closest proper beach to the capital, which is why so many short packages pair the two. West of Bangkok, Kanchanaburi is where the Death Railway and the Bridge on the River Kwai tell the sombre history of the Second World War, best understood at the well-kept war cemeteries and museums. The town is also the gateway to Erawan Falls and quiet riverside raft-house stays. It works as a long day trip or an overnight from Bangkok.

Inside Erawan National Park near Kanchanaburi, seven tiers of emerald pools climb through the forest, the upper levels shaped like the three-headed elephant the falls are named after. 32. Hua Hin

The Gulf-coast town of Hua Hin has been the Thai royal family's seaside retreat for a century, which gives it a calmer, more polished feel than Pattaya. The long beach, the night market, the Cicada weekend market and the nearby vineyards suit families and couples who want quiet over party. It is a straightforward three-hour drive or train ride from Bangkok.

33. Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

An hour and a half south-west of Bangkok, Damnoen Saduak is the classic floating market of narrow canals crowded with wooden boats selling noodles, fruit and souvenirs. It is busiest and best in the early morning, so leave the city by 6 am or join a tour. Hire your own paddle boat for an hour to escape the tightest tourist stretch.

34. Koh Lanta

Quieter than Phuket or Phi Phi, Koh Lanta in the south is a string of long west-facing beaches made for slow sunsets and family stays. The old town on the east coast keeps its stilt-house charm, and the island is a springboard for snorkelling trips to Koh Rok and the Trang islands. The dry season here runs November to April.

Near the Cambodian border in the east, Koh Chang is a big, jungle-covered island with waterfalls and a laid-back beach strip, while smaller Koh Kood further out stays genuinely quiet with some of the clearest water in the Gulf.
