About Koh Poda Island

Koh Poda is the largest and best known of four small islands that sit just off Ao Nang, on Krabi's Andaman coast. Its neighbours are Koh Kai, which most visitors call Chicken Island for the thin rock that juts up like a bird's neck, along with Koh Tap and Koh Mor. Koh Poda itself is barely a kilometre across. A stand of casuarina trees backs the beach, the sand is soft and pale, and a limestone spire called Poda Nok rises straight out of the sea a short way offshore.

The island is uninhabited and reached only by boat. It lies roughly 8 km off Ao Nang, about a 15 to 25 minute ride by longtail or 10 to 15 minutes by speedboat. Longtails also leave from Railay, Tonsai and Klong Muang, and most run as part of a shared island-hopping trip rather than a private charter. One thing solo travellers should know: shared longtails usually wait until they fill up, so an early start saves a lot of standing around on the sand.

Snorkelling is the main reason people come. The reef close to shore holds hard coral and reef fish, and the water stays shallow and calm enough that first-timers can join a guided snorkel without knowing how to swim. Confident swimmers can push out toward the drop-offs around the karst. Bring your own mask if you have one. There is no gear rental on the island.

Most visitors reach Koh Poda on the classic four-island tour, which links Poda with Chicken Island, Koh Tap and Koh Mor in a single day. At low tide a pale sandbar the Thais call Talay Waek, the "separated sea", surfaces and joins those three neighbouring islands, so you can walk from one to the next across the sand. Koh Poda sits right beside it. The sandbar shows for only a few hours around low water, so the tour timing is worth checking against the tide chart before you book.

A day is plenty to see Koh Poda properly. There is no accommodation, and the last boats leave in the late afternoon, so treat it as a day trip rather than an overnight. The beach stays quiet compared with Railay or Phi Phi, and that calm is much of the appeal.

Highlights Of Poda Island

• A wide, pale-sand beach that stays shallow far from the shore, making it calm and ideal for children and non-swimmers.

• A snorkelling reef within wading distance of the beach, home to colourful coral and reef fish.

• The Talay Waek sandbar walk that connects the neighbouring islands during low tide.

• Poda Nok, the free-standing limestone spire offshore and one of the most photographed rock formations in Krabi.

• A stop on the popular Four Islands Tour, allowing you to explore three more islands on the same trip.

How to Reach Koh Poda

Koh Poda has no pier of its own, so every visit starts with a boat from the mainland. The usual departure points are Ao Nang and Railay, with a few boats from Tonsai and Klong Muang. A shared longtail is the cheapest way across and takes about 15 to 25 minutes from Ao Nang. A speedboat on an organised tour is quicker but costs more. A simple return longtail ticket runs around 300 THB per person, while a full four-island tour is priced per boat and per group.

For airport, road and train routing to Krabi and the exact boat timings, see our how to reach Koh Poda guide.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, roughly November to April, is when Koh Poda is at its best: calm seas, clear water for snorkelling and reliable boat service. Seas get rougher and visibility drops in the May to October monsoon, and some operators cut back trips. Whatever the month, go early. Boats start mid-morning, the last ones leave around 4 pm, and the beach is emptiest before the tour crowds arrive.

Full month-by-month detail is on our Koh Poda timings page.

Entry Fee and Essential Information

Koh Poda sits inside Hat Nopparat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, so there is a national-park entry fee on top of your boat fare, around 400 THB for adults and 200 THB for children. It is often collected at the island or bundled into a tour price, so carry cash. There is no ATM, no shop and only limited food on the island, and the phone signal is patchy. Pack water, reef-safe sunscreen, a dry bag and anything else you need for the day.

For the current fee and what a ticket covers, see our Koh Poda entry fees page, and check the visitor tips before you go.

Things to Do and Island Hopping

Beyond the beach, a day at Koh Poda is about the water and the islands around it. Snorkelling over the near-shore reef is the main draw, and the shallow bay is a gentle place to swim or just wade. Many visitors pair Koh Poda with the four-island tour, adding Chicken Island's sandbar, the swim-through shallows at Koh Tap and the quiet cove at Koh Mor.

TravelTriangle's Krabi and Thailand packages build this into a wider trip, pairing Krabi's islands with Phuket beaches or Bangkok, all customisable and booked through verified local agents. Browse Thailand tour packages, compare Railay Beach and Maya Bay, or talk to an agent to fit Koh Poda into your itinerary.

"Book the earliest longtail you can and check the tide chart first. The Talay Waek sandbar only shows for a couple of hours around low water, and the afternoon boats fill up fast," says the TravelTriangle Thailand desk.

Fares and the national-park fee on this page are checked by our Thailand desk against operator rates and current park notices.

The check-in process was seamless. The accommodation itself was beyond my expectations.I really love the swimming pool and the buffet breakfast. His commitment was commendable. We took 4 night 5 days package. The hotels we stayed were fortunately good. Cab serv

Like we had a bangkok city tour in our package but reclining budha/watarun temple was not part of it. Better to have it included in basic packages which would improve customer satisfaction. But overall it was a good and hustle free experience.

    Krabi Travel FAQs

How do I get to Koh Poda Island from Krabi or Ao Nang?

Koh Poda is reached only by boat. Shared longtails leave from Ao Nang, Railay, Tonsai and Klong Muang and take about 15 to 25 minutes from Ao Nang; speedboats on organised tours are faster. There is no bridge or ferry pier on the island itself. A return longtail ticket is around 300 THB per person, and most people go as part of a four-island day tour.

What is the best time to visit Koh Poda?

Aim for the dry season, November to April, when the sea is calm, the water is clear for snorkelling and boats run reliably. The May to October monsoon brings rougher water, lower visibility and fewer trips. On any day, start early: boats begin mid-morning, the last ones leave around 4 pm, and the beach is quietest before the island-hopping crowds arrive.

Is there an entry fee for Koh Poda Island?

Yes. Koh Poda is part of Hat Nopparat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, so a national-park fee applies on top of your boat fare, roughly 400 THB for adults and 200 THB for children. It is usually collected at the island or included in a tour price. Carry cash, because there is no ATM and often no card facility.

Is Koh Poda good for snorkelling?

It is one of the easier places to snorkel in Krabi. The reef sits close to shore in shallow, calm water, so beginners and non-swimmers can join a guided snorkel, while stronger swimmers can head toward the deeper water around Poda Nok. There is no gear rental on the island, so bring your own mask and fins or pre-book them with your tour.

Is Koh Poda Island worth visiting?

For a beach and snorkelling day, yes. Koh Poda has softer sand and calmer, shallower water than busier Railay or Phi Phi, the near-shore reef is easy for beginners, and Poda Nok makes it one of the most photogenic stops in Krabi. It works best as part of a four-island tour rather than a trip on its own, since there is nothing to do once the last boat leaves.

What islands are near Koh Poda?

Its three closest neighbours are Chicken Island (Koh Kai), named for the bird-shaped rock on its tip, Koh Tap and Koh Mor. All three sit a short longtail hop away and are joined at low tide by the Talay Waek sandbar, which is why they are usually visited together on the four-island tour. Phi Phi and Railay are farther out but often paired with Koh Poda on longer Krabi trips.

What is Koh Poda Island famous for?

Its wide white-sand beach, shallow turquoise water and the free-standing limestone spire, Poda Nok, that rises out of the sea offshore. It is also the anchor of the popular four-island tour and sits beside the Talay Waek sandbar, so it is known as much for the island-hopping day out as for the beach itself.

Can you stay overnight on Koh Poda?

No. Koh Poda is uninhabited, with no hotels, guesthouses or camping, and the last boats leave in the late afternoon. It is a day-trip island. A single day is enough to enjoy the beach, snorkel the reef and join the four-island tour before heading back to Ao Nang, Railay or your Krabi hotel for the night.

What is the separated sea (Talay Waek) near Koh Poda?

Talay Waek, which means "separated sea", is a pale sandbar that surfaces at low tide and links three islands next to Koh Poda: Chicken Island (Koh Kai), Koh Tap and Koh Mor. For a few hours around low water you can walk between them across the sand. Koh Poda sits right alongside, which is why the four-island tour pairs the beach with the sandbar walk. Because it depends on the tide, time your tour to catch it.
