Khao Phanom Bencha National Park In Krabi

Khao Phanom Bencha National Park: Krabi's Highest Peak and Huay To Waterfall

Have a wonderful experience at Khao Phanom Bencha National Park

Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6533 reviews )

Most people come to Krabi for the islands and miss the green wall behind the town. Khao Phanom Bencha National Park is that wall. It protects Krabi Province's highest mountain, the 1,397-metre Khao Phanom Bencha peak, along with the multi-tier Huay To Waterfall, rainforest trails, caves and a genuinely rare cast of wildlife. It sits about 20 km inland from Krabi Town, roughly a 40-minute drive, and stays open 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Foreign entry is around 100 THB, near Rs 285, which makes it one of the cheapest half-days in the province. This guide covers the waterfall, the summit trek and its guide rule, the wildlife, fees in rupees, and how to get there from Krabi Town or Ao Nang.

Khao Phanom Bencha National Park at a glance

A quick snapshot before you plan the day. The detail sits in the sections below.

Detail What to know

Star attraction Huay To Waterfall, a multi-tier cascade with swimmable pools near the base
Highest point Khao Phanom Bencha peak, 1,397 m, the tallest mountain in Krabi Province
Entry fee Foreign adult ~100 THB (approx Rs 285), child ~50 THB (~Rs 145), cash at the gate
Open 8:00 am to 4:30 pm daily

Best time May to December for the fullest falls, November to February for cool, dry hiking

About the park

Khao Phanom Bencha covers a compact block of evergreen rainforest on the flanks of its namesake peak, the highest in Krabi Province at 1,397 metres. It is an inland counterweight to the coast: instead of limestone islands and beaches, you get waterfalls, forest trails, five caves and dense birdlife, all within an easy drive of Krabi Town. Because it draws a fraction of the crowds that Railay or the islands pull, it stays quiet even in peak season, which is exactly why hikers and birders make the detour.

The park works well as a half-day trip on its own or a morning stop before the coast. Families tend to stick to Huay To Waterfall near the entrance, while trekkers push on toward the summit ridge. Whichever you pick, come early. Light fades fast under the canopy, and the last entry is well before the 4:30 pm close, which the Khao Phanom Bencha timings page breaks down day by day.

Huay To Waterfall: tiers, pools and the walk in

Huay To Waterfall is the reason most day-trippers come. It is a multi-tier cascade that steps down the hillside near the park entrance, with clear rock pools at the base of several tiers that are cool enough to swim in when the water is running. The first tier is an easy walk of about 500 metres from the entrance on a mostly shaded path, so you do not need to be a hiker to reach the swimming pools. Climbing to the higher tiers is steeper and the rocks turn slick, so this is where sturdy footwear earns its place.

The falls are at their loudest and fullest in and just after the rainy months, roughly May to December, when the runoff is heavy. In the dry season the flow thins to a trickle at the top tiers, though the lower pools usually still hold enough water for a dip. A second, smaller cascade, Huay Sakhe Waterfall, sits deeper in the park and sees far fewer visitors if you want the forest largely to yourself. The park's five caves, including the Khao Pheung cave system a couple of kilometres from the visitor centre, round out the flat, easy sights.

Trekking to Krabi's highest peak (1,397 m)

The serious draw for hikers is the climb toward the 1,397-metre summit of Khao Phanom Bencha, the tallest point in the province. This is not a casual stroll. The trail runs through thick rainforest, gains height steadily, and can stay muddy and leech-prone in the wet season. Near the top, a rocky plateau known as Kor Nang Non opens up the views that make the effort worth it. Reckon on a full day for the round trip and a good level of fitness.

A licensed guide is mandatory for the summit trek, and for good reason: the route is unmarked in places and easy to lose under the canopy. Guides are arranged at the park headquarters, typically around 500 THB per day, near Rs 1,425, for a group of up to seven, so the cost splits well among friends. Start at first light, carry more water than you think you need, and tell the rangers your plan before you set off.

Wildlife you might see

This is one of the few places near Krabi where the forest still feels wild. Khao Phanom Bencha shelters some genuinely rare mammals, including the clouded leopard, Asiatic black bear, Sumatran serow and, if you are very lucky and very quiet, a tapir. You are far more likely to hear and glimpse white-handed gibbons swinging through the canopy at dawn, along with stump-tailed macaques, mouse deer and wild boar along the trails.

Birders have the best odds of a memorable sighting. The park records well over 200 bird species, and it is one of the strongholds for the critically endangered Gurney's Pitta, plus hornbills that you often hear before you see. Bring binoculars, keep your voice down, and do not feed any animal you meet. Feeding wildlife is strictly prohibited in the park and disturbs the very behaviour you came to watch.

Entry fees, guide and camping costs in rupees

Here is what a visit costs an Indian traveller, converted at about Rs 2.85 to the baht. Treat these as starting figures and carry cash: the gate and the park shop do not take cards. The authoritative, up-to-date fee list lives on the Khao Phanom Bencha entry fees sub-tab, which is worth a look before you go.

Expense Thai baht Approx in Rs
Park entry, foreign adult ~100 ~Rs 285
Park entry, foreign child (3 to 14) ~50 ~Rs 145
Car parking ~50 ~Rs 145
Motorbike parking ~20 ~Rs 60
Licensed guide, summit trek (per day, up to 7) ~500 ~Rs 1,425
Camping tent pitch or basic room from ~300 from ~Rs 855

So a family half-day at the waterfall rarely costs more than a few hundred rupees a head once you are through the gate, which is what makes this park such good value next to a boat trip. If you want to stay the night, the park runs simple bungalows, fan or air-conditioned rooms, and tent pitches near the headquarters. These book out on Thai long weekends, so reserve ahead through the national parks department rather than turning up and hoping.

How to reach the park from Krabi Town or Ao Nang

Khao Phanom Bencha is about 20 km north of Krabi Town, a drive of roughly 40 to 50 minutes, and there is no direct public bus to the gate, so you will need your own wheels or a charter. The easiest option for confident riders is a rented motorbike from Krabi Town or Ao Nang: the road is paved and the turn-off is signposted, and it lets you leave early to beat the heat. Otherwise, charter a songtaew or a taxi for the round trip and ask the driver to wait, since flagging one down at the park for the return leg is not reliable.

From Ao Nang or Railay, add around 30 to 40 minutes to the drive. If you would rather not arrange transport yourself, many Krabi day tours bundle the park with the Tiger Cave Temple or the Emerald Pool. For step-by-step routes, fares and pickup points, the how to reach Khao Phanom Bencha page has the detail. Building a wider itinerary? Our places to visit in Krabi guide and the best beaches in Krabi round-up help you slot the park between the coast and Railay Beach.

Best time to visit: full falls or comfortable hiking

There is a real trade-off here, and it depends on what you came for. If the waterfall is the goal, the rainy months from May to December send the most water over Huay To, and the pools are deepest and most swimmable then. The catch is slippery trails, the odd leech and afternoon downpours, so go in the morning and watch the rocks.

If you are here to trek to the summit or to birdwatch in comfort, the cool, dry window from November to February is kinder: firmer trails, clearer views from Kor Nang Non and lower humidity, though the top tiers of the falls run thinner. March and April get hot and dry. Whenever you come, arrive soon after the 8:00 am opening to have the pools to yourself and to leave time for the trek. The timings page has the month-by-month and daily cut-offs.

What to carry, safety and facilities

Facilities are basic, so come self-sufficient. There is a ranger station, simple toilets and a small shop near the entrance, but no ATM and nowhere to buy gear, so bring what you need from town. Pack cash in baht, plenty of water, insect repellent and a rain layer in the wet season.

Carry this Why it matters
Grippy trail shoes or sport sandals The rocks around the falls and on the trail get slippery, especially after rain. Flip-flops are a fall waiting to happen.
Cash in Thai baht The gate, parking and shop are cash only, and there is no ATM at the park.
Plenty of drinking water There is little on sale beyond the entrance, and the summit trek is long and humid.
Insect repellent Rainforest means mosquitoes, and leeches on the higher trails in the wet season.
Swimwear and a quick-dry towel For the Huay To pools. There are no proper changing facilities, so dress simply.
A rain layer and dry bag Downpours arrive fast from May to December. Keep your phone and cash dry.

A few safety basics: do not swim above the lower tiers when the water is running hard, keep children within reach around the pools, and never attempt the summit without the mandatory guide. Tell the rangers your route, and turn back if the weather closes in. This is real rainforest, not a manicured park.

Before you go

Khao Phanom Bencha is the easiest way to swap the beach for the rainforest for a day without leaving Krabi. Come early, carry cash and water, wear shoes that grip, and decide up front whether you are here for a waterfall swim or the long climb to Krabi's highest point. When you are ready to fit it into a bigger trip, our Thailand tour packages and Krabi travel guide help you pair the park with the islands, beaches and temples nearby.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Get your answers — before you plan your trip.

    Krabi Travel FAQs

What is the entrance fee for Khao Phanom Bencha National Park?

Foreign visitors pay around 100 THB for an adult, near Rs 285, and about 50 THB for a child aged 3 to 14, near Rs 145. Parking is roughly 50 THB for a car and 20 THB for a motorbike. The gate is cash only, so carry Thai baht. The authoritative, current fee list sits on the Khao Phanom Bencha entry fees sub-tab linked above.

    What are the opening hours?

The park is open daily from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Last entry and the start of the summit trek need to be much earlier in the day, so aim to arrive soon after opening. Trails get dark under the canopy well before the official close. The timings sub-tab has the day-by-day cut-offs and seasonal notes.

How do I get to the park from Krabi Town?

It is about 20 km north of Krabi Town, a 40 to 50-minute drive, with no direct public bus to the gate. The easiest options are a rented motorbike or a chartered songtaew or taxi with the driver waiting for the return leg. From Ao Nang or Railay, add roughly 30 to 40 minutes. See the how to reach page for routes and fares.

What is Huay To Waterfall and how far is the walk?

Huay To is the park's main waterfall, a multi-tier cascade with rock pools you can swim in near the base. The first tier is an easy walk of about 500 metres from the entrance on a mostly shaded path, so most visitors reach the swimming pools without any real hiking. The higher tiers are steeper and the rocks are slippery, so wear grippy footwear.

Can I swim at Khao Phanom Bencha, and are the pools open all year?

Yes, the pools at the base of Huay To Waterfall are the main place to swim, and they are cool and clear when the water is running. They are fullest in and just after the rainy season, roughly May to December. In the dry months the top tiers thin out, though the lower pools usually still hold enough water for a dip. Watch the slippery rocks.

Can I trek to the summit, and do I need a guide?

Yes, you can trek toward the 1,397-metre summit, the highest point in Krabi Province, but a licensed guide is mandatory because the rainforest route is unmarked in places. Guides are arranged at park headquarters for about 500 THB per day, near Rs 1,425, for up to seven people. It is a full-day hike that needs decent fitness, so start early and carry plenty of water.

What wildlife might I see in the park?

Khao Phanom Bencha shelters rare mammals including clouded leopard, Asiatic black bear, Sumatran serow and tapir, though these are elusive. You are more likely to see white-handed gibbons, stump-tailed macaques, mouse deer and wild boar. Birdwatchers do best of all: the park records over 200 species and is a stronghold for the endangered Gurney's Pitta and several hornbills.

What is the best time of year to visit?

It depends on your goal. For the fullest waterfall and deepest pools, come in the rainy months from May to December, and go in the morning to dodge afternoon downpours. For comfortable trekking, clearer summit views and firmer trails, the cool, dry window from November to February is better, though the top tiers of the falls run thinner then.

Is camping or accommodation available in the park?

Yes. The national parks department runs simple bungalows, fan and air-conditioned rooms, and tent pitches near the headquarters, starting from around 300 THB. They fill up on Thai public holidays and long weekends, so book ahead through the parks department rather than arriving on spec. Otherwise, most travellers base themselves in Krabi Town or Ao Nang and visit on a day trip.

Is the park suitable for families and kids?

Yes, if you stick to Huay To Waterfall near the entrance. The 500-metre walk to the first tier is easy, the lower pools are shallow and good for a paddle, and the shaded path suits children. Keep kids within reach on the wet rocks and skip the summit trek with young children, since that is a long, guided rainforest hike, not a family stroll.

What should I wear and bring?

Wear grippy trail shoes or sport sandals for the slippery rocks, and bring swimwear and a quick-dry towel for the pools. Pack plenty of drinking water, insect repellent, cash in baht and a rain layer in the wet season. There is no ATM and only a small shop at the entrance, so bring what you need from Krabi Town before you set off.

How much time should I plan for a visit?

For the waterfall and a swim, half a day is plenty, including the drive from Krabi Town. If you want the guided summit trek, set aside a full day and start at first light. Many travellers pair the park with the Tiger Cave Temple or the Emerald Pool to fill out the day, since all three sit inland from the coast.
