Places to Visit in Krabi: Islands, Beaches, Temples and Pools by Area

Welcome to this Little Slice of Paradise in Thailand

Koh Lanta In Krabi

Koh Lanta is the calm end of Krabi. While Ao Nang and Phi Phi run on day-boats and beach bars, this long island an hour or so south trades the crowds for a string of west-facing beaches, a slow Old Town of stilt houses, and some of the best diving in the Andaman within reach. It sits at the southern edge of Krabi province...

Railay Beach In Krabi

Railay Beach sits on a limestone peninsula in Krabi, on Thailand's Andaman coast, and the first thing to know about it is that no road reaches it. Sheer cliffs cut Railay off from the mainland, so you arrive the same way locals have for decades: by longtail boat, about 10 to 15 minutes from Ao Nang. That short crossing is w...

Hong Island In Krabi

Hong Island is the day trip most people picture when they imagine Krabi from a boat: a hooked limestone island wrapped around a shallow, jade-green lagoon you paddle straight into. It sits inside the Than Bok Khorani National Park, about 6 km off the Ao Nang coast, roughly a 30-minute longtail ride away. Koh Hong (the Thai ...

Tiger Cave Temple In Krabi

Wat Tham Suea, the Tiger Cave Temple, is the climb everyone in Krabi talks about and the one most first-timers underestimate. It sits on a wooded limestone hill about 9 km northeast of Krabi Town, and the reward at the top is a golden Buddha with a full sweep over the province's karst cliffs and the Andaman coast. Getting u...

Koh Poda Island In Krabi

Koh Poda is the largest and best known of four small islands that sit just off Ao Nang, on Krabi's Andaman coast. Its neighbours are Koh Kai, which most visitors call Chicken Island for the thin rock that juts up like a bird's neck, along with Koh Tap and Koh Mor. Koh Poda itself is barely a kilometre across. A stand of cas...

Khao Phanom Bencha National Park

Most people come to Krabi for the islands and miss the green wall behind the town. Khao Phanom Bencha National Park is that wall. It protects Krabi Province's highest mountain, the 1,397-metre Khao Phanom Bencha peak, along with the multi-tier Huay To Waterfall, rainforest trails, caves and a genuinely rare cast of wildlife...

Ao Nang Beach In Krabi

Ao Nang Beach is the main beach town on Krabi's Andaman coast and the launch point for almost every island trip in the area. It sits about 26 km from Krabi International Airport, roughly a 40-minute drive, which makes it the easiest base for a first Krabi visit. The beach itself is a long strip of soft sand backed by a prom...

Koh Phi Phi Le In Krabi

Ko Phi Phi Le, also spelled Ko Phi Phi Leh, is the smaller and uninhabited half of Thailand's Phi Phi Islands, roughly 45 minutes by speedboat off the Krabi coast in the Andaman Sea. Nobody lives here. There are no hotels, no roads and no overnight stays, because the whole island sits inside Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Ph...

Maya Bay In Krabi

Maya Bay is open in 2026. This is the cliff-ringed cove on Ko Phi Phi Leh, off Krabi in southern Thailand, that the film The Beach made famous, and after years shut for the reef to recover it now welcomes visitors again, under strict rules. You cannot swim inside the bay, you cannot stay the night, and for a stretch each ye...

The best places to visit in Krabi split into four easy groups: the islands you reach by boat (Poda, Hong, Bamboo, Phi Phi), the beaches around Ao Nang and Railay, the temples and viewpoints inland, and the emerald pools and hot springs in the forest. Most first-timers base themselves at Ao Nang and cover the highlights in four to five days. This guide sorts every major Krabi attraction by area so you can pick what fits your trip, see how long each needs, and cost the entry fees in rupees before you go. For the full spot-by-spot list, our companion 45 places to visit in Krabi guide runs even deeper. This page is the pick-and-plan version.

Krabi at a glance

Snapshot from TravelTriangle trip data and our Thailand desk.

What The short answer
Ideal trip length 4 to 5 nights (2 days islands, 1 day inland pools, 1 to 2 days beaches and town)
Best time to visit November to March (dry, calm seas); see the planning section below
Most-booked pairing Krabi with Phuket or Phi Phi on the same Thailand trip
Nearest airport Krabi International (KBV), about 40 minutes from Ao Nang
Getting around Longtail boats and ferries to islands and Railay; songthaews on the mainland
Typical India budget from about Rs 55,000 to 90,000 per person for 5 to 6 nights (flights, stay, tours)

Krabi by area: where to base yourself and what to see

Krabi is not one place you tick off in a morning. It is a coastline of beach towns, offshore islands and forest reserves, and the smart move is to choose a base and plan day trips out from it. Ao Nang is the easiest first base because almost every island boat leaves from its beach. Railay suits climbers and couples who want quiet cliffs. Krabi Town is cheaper and more local. Use the table to match an area to the kind of trip you want, then read the sections below for the specifics.

Area Best for Getting there Time to give it
Ao Nang First-timers, families, island day trips, dining and shopping About 40 min drive from KBV airport Base 3 to 5 nights
Railay and Ton Sai Rock climbing, quiet cove beaches, honeymooners Longtail boat only, ~15 min from Ao Nang Half to full day, or stay 1 to 2 nights
The islands (Poda, Hong, Bamboo, Phi Phi) Snorkelling, beach-hopping, photos Join-in longtail or speedboat tours from Ao Nang 1 to 2 full days
Inland forest (Emerald Pool, Hot Springs) Nature day trip, swimming in spring water Rented car, taxi or join-in tour, ~1 hr each way One full day
Krabi Town Budget stays, night market, local food, temples nearby About 30 min from Ao Nang by songthaew Half day plus an evening
Klong Muang and Tubkaek Calm resort beaches, sunsets, slower pace About 30 min north of Ao Nang Stay if you want quiet

Islands and island-hopping: the heart of a Krabi trip

If you do one thing in Krabi, get on a boat. The islands off Ao Nang are the signature experience, and most people see them on a join-in tour rather than chartering their own boat. Two routes cover the highlights. The 4-Island Tour stays close to shore and is the classic half-day. The Hong Islands tour goes to a quieter lagoon-and-beach cluster, and a full-day speedboat run reaches Phi Phi and Maya Bay. Pick by how much time on the water you want and how far you are willing to go.

The 4-Island Tour (Poda, Chicken, Tup and Mor)

This is the tour most visitors book first. It links Koh Poda, a white-sand island about 8 km off Ao Nang with a reef roughly 20 metres from shore, with Chicken Island (Koh Gai, named for its hen-shaped rock), and Tup and Mor islands, which join by a sandbar you can walk across at low tide. A longtail runs about half a day. A speedboat does the same loop faster with more time to snorkel. Go early to beat the midday crowds at Poda.

Hong Islands

Hong Island and its neighbours sit inside the Than Bok Khorani National Park, north of Ao Nang. The draw is the enclosed lagoon (the 'hong', meaning room) that opens up at the centre and the quiet beach on Koh Hong itself. It is calmer and less busy than the 4-Island loop, which makes it a good second day on the water. A national park fee applies on top of the tour price.

Bamboo Island and Phi Phi

For a longer day, the speedboat run heads out to the Phi Phi group. Bamboo Island (Koh Phai) has a shallow turquoise fringe that is ideal for a swim stop, and Maya Bay on Koh Phi Phi Leh is the cove made famous by the film 'The Beach'. Maya Bay reopened after a long recovery closure and now runs under strict visitor rules, and it shuts for conservation for part of the year, so check it is open for your dates. You can also reach Phi Phi as a standalone day trip or an overnight from Krabi.

Koh Lanta, further south

Koh Lanta is a longer-stay island rather than a day trip. Its long west-coast beaches, old town and diving (Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are famous manta and reef sites in season) reward two or three nights. Treat it as an add-on if you have a week, not a morning outing from Ao Nang.

Indicative join-in tour costs, per person. Prices vary by operator, season and boat type. Confirm when you book. National park fees are usually extra and paid on the day.

Tour Main stops Typical duration Indicative cost per person (INR)
4-Island Tour (longtail) Poda, Chicken, Tup, Mor Half day Rs 2,500 to 3,500
4-Island Tour (speedboat) Poda, Chicken, Tup, Mor Half day, faster Rs 3,800 to 4,800
Hong Islands (speedboat) Koh Hong lagoon, nearby beaches Full day Rs 4,500 to 5,800 + park fee
Phi Phi and Bamboo (speedboat) Maya Bay, Bamboo, Pileh Lagoon Full day Rs 4,500 to 6,500 + park fee
Private longtail charter Your pick of 2 to 3 islands Half day Rs 5,500 to 9,000 per boat

Best beaches in Krabi

Krabi's beaches range from the busy launch-point strip at Ao Nang to cliff-backed coves you can only reach by boat. Here is how they differ so you can pick the right one for a swim, a sunset or a quiet afternoon.

Railay and Phra Nang Beach

Railay sits on a limestone peninsula with no road in, so you arrive by longtail from Ao Nang in about 15 minutes. West Railay is the wide sunset beach, and East Railay is the mangrove-fringed boat landing. A short walk over the headland reaches Phra Nang Beach, a cliff-backed cove with a cave shrine and some of the best swimming water in the area. Climbers come here for the bolted limestone routes above the sand.

Ao Nang and Nopparat Thara

Ao Nang Beach is the main beach town and the base most people choose. The sand is a long promenade strip backed by restaurants, dive shops and the pier where island boats leave. Just north, Nopparat Thara is longer, quieter and part of the national park, with a sandbar to a small island at low tide. Ao Nang is for convenience and dining. Nopparat Thara is for a calmer walk.

Klong Muang and Tubkaek

North of Ao Nang, Klong Muang and Tubkaek are the calm resort beaches. They face west for sunsets over the Hong Islands, the water is gentle, and the pace is slow. If you want a quiet base with a pool and a view rather than nightlife, stay here and day-trip to the busier spots.

Temples and viewpoints

Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea)

Tiger Cave Temple, or Wat Tham Suea, is the climb everyone in Krabi talks about. A staircase of more than 1,200 steps rises up a limestone hill near Krabi Town to a golden Buddha and a viewpoint over the whole province. The temple grounds hold working monastic caves and Buddhist relics, and entry is free (a donation is customary). Start early, carry water, and take the climb slowly. It is steep and there is no shortcut to the top.

Khao Khanab Nam and Dragon Crest

Two twin limestone peaks rise straight out of the river by Krabi Town at Khao Khanab Nam, best seen on a short longtail trip from the town pier. For a harder payoff, the Dragon Crest hike (Khao Ngon Nak) climbs through forest to a jutting rock ledge with a long view over the coast. Give it a half day and go in the cool of the morning.

Khao Phanom Bencha National Park

Khao Phanom Bencha National Park protects Krabi's highest peak and a set of jungle waterfalls, with Huay To Falls an easy walk from the entrance. It is a green, uncrowded half-day for anyone who wants forest and water rather than beaches, and it pairs well with the inland pools on the same day out.

Inland day trip: emerald pools and hot springs

About an hour inland from Ao Nang, the forest hides two of Krabi's most photographed spots and a natural spa. The Emerald Pool (Sa Morakot) is a clear green spring-fed pool you can swim in, set inside the Thung Teao Forest reserve. A short walk further is the Blue Pool (Sa Nam Phut), a startling blue basin that is for looking, not swimming, and it can dry up outside the wet months. Close by, the Krabi Hot Springs let you sit in warm mineral water in the forest. These three make one relaxed day out, and most join-in tours combine them with Tiger Cave Temple.

Foreigner entry fees, indicative, converted at about Rs 2.86 to the baht. Fees and hours change, so verify at the counter.

Attraction Foreigner entry (THB) Approx INR Typical hours and notes
Emerald Pool + Blue Pool (Thung Teao) ~200 ~Rs 570 8:30am to 4pm; Blue Pool can be dry outside the wet season
Krabi Hot Springs (Klong Thom) ~90 to 100 ~Rs 260 to 290 8am to 5pm; go early before tour groups
Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea) Free (donation) - Dawn to dusk; 1,200-plus step climb
Hong Islands (Than Bok Khorani NP fee) ~300 ~Rs 860 Paid on the boat tour, per day
Phi Phi / Maya Bay (Mu Ko Phi Phi NP) ~400 ~Rs 1,145 Maya Bay closes part of the year for conservation
Khao Phanom Bencha National Park ~200 ~Rs 570 Daytime; waterfalls best in and just after the wet season

Things to do and Krabi Town

Beyond the beaches, Krabi has an easy set of activities that fill the gaps between island days. For the full activity rundown, our things to do in Krabi guide covers the experiences. The highlights are worth knowing when you plan.

Sea kayaking at Ao Thalane. Paddle through mangrove channels and past limestone cliffs on a calm half-day trip, good for families and non-swimmers.

Rock climbing at Railay. The bolted limestone here is world known, and beginner half-day courses run daily with gear and a guide.

Snorkelling and diving. Reefs off Poda and the Phi Phi group are the easy snorkel sites. Certified divers head to Hin Daeng and Hin Muang from Koh Lanta in season.

Parasailing off Ao Nang. A quick, popular ride over the bay if you want a photo and a rush between island tours.

In the evening, Krabi Town comes alive at the Walking Street night market (Friday to Sunday), a good-value place for Thai street food, and the riverside Chao Fah food market. The town grew from an old elephant trading post and keeps a low-rise, local feel that Ao Nang has lost. It is the cheapest base and the best one for eating like a local.

Plan your Krabi trip

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Krabi is November to March, when the skies are dry, the sea is calm and every island tour runs. April and May are hot and quieter. June to October is the green season: cheaper, but with rain and rougher water that can cancel boats and closes some park sites, and Maya Bay is usually shut for part of this window. For a full month-by-month read, see our best time to visit Krabi guide.

How to reach Krabi from India

There are no direct flights from India to Krabi, so almost everyone connects through Bangkok or Phuket. The common routes are a flight to Bangkok (BKK or DMK) and a 1 hour 20 minute domestic hop to Krabi (KBV), or a flight to Phuket and a road-and-ferry transfer of about three to four hours. From Krabi airport it is roughly 40 minutes by taxi to Ao Nang. Our how to reach Krabi guide has the routing detail and transfer options.

How many days and getting around

Four to five nights is the sweet spot: two days on the islands, one inland day for the pools and Tiger Cave, and a day or two for the beaches and Krabi Town. Base in Ao Nang for the shortest boat rides. Longtails and speedboats handle the islands and Railay (there is no road to Railay, so it is boat only), while songthaews and taxis cover the mainland. If you would rather have the boats, transfers and stays booked as one trip, see our Krabi tour packages or the wider Thailand packages.

Why plan Krabi with us

"Book the early island boats and you get Poda almost to yourself, and by 11am the day-trip crowd lands," says a longtail skipper we work with at Ao Nang. That kind of ground-level timing is what our Thailand desk checks the tours and transfers on this page against before we put a Krabi trip together. Every itinerary is customisable, planned with verified local agents, and backed by real traveller reviews for Krabi. This guide was reviewed by our Thailand travel desk.

Ready to plan Krabi?

Sort Krabi by area and it plans itself: a base at Ao Nang, two days of island boats, an inland day for pools and Tiger Cave, and time to slow down on the quiet northern beaches. When you want the boats, stays and transfers handled as one trip, browse our Krabi tour packages or start from the wider Krabi travel guide.

The check-in process was seamless. The accommodation itself was beyond my expectations.I really love the swimming pool and the buffet breakfast. Beyond the hotel, the itinerary you crafted for us was diverse and captivating. From exploring the bustling streets of Bangkok to immersing myself in the natural wonders of Phuket, every destination left an indelible mark on my heart. I will undoubtedly recommend your travel agency to my friends, family, and colleagues who are seeking an extraordinary travel experience. Yugal was our travel agent. He was always available from the day we booked the trip till we completed our trip. He was always a call away and was helpful to resolve all the queries. His commitment was commendable. We took 4 night 5 days package. The hotels we stayed were fortunately good. Cab serv
ices were not as much cooperative as expected. I would suggest to include most imp tourist spots of bangkok/pattaya in basic package itself. Like we had a bangkok city tour in our package but reclining budha/watarun temple was not part of it. Better to have it included in basic packages which would improve customer satisfaction. But overall it was a good and hustle free experience.

    Krabi Travel FAQs

    Is Krabi worth visiting?

Yes. Krabi packs islands, cliff beaches, temples and forest pools into one compact area, with fewer crowds and lower prices than Phuket. If you want boat trips, swimming and a relaxed base for four to five days, it is one of the best-value beach destinations in Thailand.

How many days are enough for Krabi?

Four to five nights covers the highlights without rushing: two days on island tours, one inland day for the Emerald Pool and Tiger Cave, and a day or two for the beaches and Krabi Town. Add two or three nights if you also want Koh Lanta or an overnight on Phi Phi.

What are the best places to visit in Krabi with family?

Ao Nang as a base, the 4-Island Tour by longtail, Nopparat Thara's calm sandbar, the Emerald Pool for a swim and Krabi Hot Springs are all easy with children. Ao Thalane kayaking suits non-swimmers, and the Walking Street night market is a fun, cheap evening out.

What is the best time to visit Krabi?

November to March is the best window: dry, calm and every tour running. June to October is cheaper but wetter, with rougher seas that can cancel boats. See our best time to visit Krabi guide for a month-by-month breakdown.

How do I reach Krabi from India and Bangkok?

There are no direct India-Krabi flights. Fly to Bangkok (BKK or DMK) then take a 1 hour 20 minute domestic flight to Krabi (KBV), or fly to Phuket and transfer by road and ferry in about three to four hours. Our how to reach Krabi guide has the full routing.

How do I get around Krabi between Ao Nang, Railay and the islands?

Longtail boats and speedboats connect Ao Nang to Railay and the islands. Railay has no road, so it is boat only, about 15 minutes from Ao Nang. On the mainland, shared songthaews and taxis run between Ao Nang, Krabi Town and the airport. Island tours include the boat, so you rarely need to arrange your own.

How much does a Krabi trip cost from India?

Budget from about Rs 55,000 to 90,000 per person for five to six nights including flights, stay and a couple of tours, depending on season and hotel class (verify current rates). Join-in island tours run about Rs 2,500 to 6,500 per person. For a costed itinerary, see our Krabi tour packages.

Which islands are on the 4-Island Tour versus the Hong Islands tour?

The 4-Island Tour covers Koh Poda, Chicken Island (Koh Gai), Tup and Mor, all close to Ao Nang and ideal for a half day. The Hong Islands tour goes further to the Koh Hong lagoon and its quieter beaches inside Than Bok Khorani National Park, which carries a separate park fee.

Are the Emerald Pool and Blue Pool worth it, and what do they cost?

Yes, if you like nature days. The Emerald Pool is a clear green spring you can swim in. The Blue Pool nearby is a vivid basin for looking, not swimming, and can dry up outside the wet season. Foreigner entry to the Thung Teao reserve is about 200 baht (roughly Rs 570). Confirm at the counter.

Is Railay reachable only by boat?

Yes. Railay sits on a peninsula with cliffs and no road access, so you reach it by longtail boat, usually from Ao Nang in about 15 minutes or from Krabi Town's Ao Nammao pier. Boats run through the day and cost a small shared fare per person.

Is Maya Bay open, and can I visit from Krabi?

Maya Bay reopened after its recovery closure and runs under strict rules (no swimming at the beach itself in places, timed visits). It also closes for conservation for part of the year, recently around August and September, so check your dates. You can visit on a full-day speedboat tour from Krabi that also stops at Bamboo Island and Pileh Lagoon.

Krabi or Phuket, which is better for first-timers?

Phuket has more nightlife, direct connections and big resorts. Krabi is calmer, greener and better for island-hopping and beaches. Many travellers do both on one trip, since they are a short ferry or drive apart. If you want a relaxed, scenic first taste of the Andaman coast, start with Krabi.
