About the Sanctuary of Truth

The Sanctuary of Truth is a religious monument that mixes Buddhist and Hindu ideas in one building, with sculpture and motifs drawn from across Asia. It was commissioned in 1981 by the Thai businessman Lek Viriyaphant, the same collector behind the Erawan Museum and Ancient City near Bangkok, and it has grown into one of the icons of Pattaya. The design follows the Ayutthaya period, and every surface, inside and out, is covered in hand-carved wooden figures rather than paint or plaster.

The building is deliberately never finished. Wood decays in the sea air, so carvers are always replacing panels, which is the point: the sanctuary is meant to show that life is a constant cycle of work, decay and renewal. Because carving is still going on overhead, staff hand every visitor a safety helmet at the entrance. Four gopura (gateway towers) face the compass points and each carries figures tied to a different culture, and the interior pays tribute to the seven forces its founder believed people depend on: Heaven, Earth, Father, Mother, Moon, Sun and Stars.

What to See Inside

The single most photographed feature is the western hall facing the Gulf of Thailand, where four seated figures represent the sun, moon, earth and stars. Look for the elephant reliefs near the eastern entrance, the chariot-and-deity carvings on the northern tower, and the ceiling panels that most visitors miss because they are looking straight ahead rather than up. A guide is included free with your ticket and walks you through the meaning of the main carvings in about 20 to 30 minutes; English tours leave roughly every half hour.

Cultural Shows and Activities

Two free performances are held on the grounds each day, at 11:30 am and 3:30 pm, combining Thai classical dance with a short martial-arts demonstration. Timing your visit for one of these is the easiest way to get more from the ticket you have already paid for. Beyond the temple itself, the riverside grounds offer a handful of paid add-ons:

• Rowing boat hire on the small lagoon, about 300 THB (approx Rs 780)

• Short horse ride on a led circuit, roughly 10 minutes, and a horse-carriage option

• Elephant enclosure with a brief 15-minute show

• Feeding the fish by the jetty, around 30 THB

The add-ons are optional and easy to skip if you are short on time. The core experience is the building and the cultural show, which together fill about an hour and a half.

Entry Fee and Tickets

Standard daytime entry is 500 THB for adults and 250 THB for children under about 1.1 metres tall. Evening slots cost more because they include the lit-up grounds. Children under a set height and monks enter free. Booking a ticket online usually shaves a little off the gate price and lets you skip the counter queue.

Ticket Adult (THB) Child (THB) Indicative INR (adult)
Daytime (8 am to 6 pm) 500 250 Rs 1,300
Evening tour 700 350 Rs 1,820
Included with every ticket Free guide, cultural show, safety helmet - -

For the current gate price, online-booking discounts and the Indian-traveller breakdown, see our Sanctuary of Truth entry fees page.

Timings

The sanctuary is open every day of the year from 8 am to 6 pm, with the last entry at 5 pm. Evening viewing, when the carvings are floodlit, runs on selected days from early evening until about 8:30 pm (confirm the current evening schedule before you go). The two daily cultural shows anchor the timetable at 11:30 am and 3:30 pm.

Session Hours Notes
Daytime 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Last entry 5:00 pm
Cultural shows 11:30 am and 3:30 pm Free with entry
Evening tour approx 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm Selected days; floodlit grounds

For the full opening-hours breakdown and public-holiday notes, see our Sanctuary of Truth timings page.

How to Reach

The sanctuary sits on Soi Naklua 12 in North Pattaya, a few minutes off Sukhumvit Road (Highway 3). If you are driving or in a Grab taxi, head to Naklua and turn towards the coast at Soi Naklua 12; parking on site is free. The cheapest way is a blue songthaew (shared pickup truck) heading to Naklua Market: get off near Soi 12 and walk the last 10 minutes to the entrance. A tuk-tuk or motorbike taxi works too. Coming from Bangkok, it is about a two-hour drive, which makes the sanctuary an easy first or last stop on a Pattaya day trip.

For train, bus and airport routing from your city, see our how to reach the Sanctuary of Truth page.

Best Time to Visit

Come in the late afternoon, around 4 pm to 5 pm. The heat has eased, the crowds from morning tour buses have thinned, and the low sun lights the west-facing hall beautifully for photos. Midday is the hottest and busiest window. Across the year, November to February is Pattaya's coolest, driest stretch and the most comfortable time for an open-air site like this; the sanctuary stays open through the May to October monsoon, when a light rain jacket is worth carrying.

Dress Code and Visitor Tips

This is a working religious site, so shorts, short skirts, sleeveless tops and anything above the knee or off-the-shoulder are not allowed. If you turn up underdressed you can rent a cover-up at the gate for about 200 to 300 THB against a refundable deposit. A few things that make the visit smoother:

• Wear the safety helmet you are given; carving overhead is genuinely ongoing

• Bring light, covered clothing and closed shoes, and a hat for the walk in

• Carry a little cash for the songthaew, add-ons and the cover-up deposit

• Sunscreen and water help, as much of the walk is in the open

For a full packing and etiquette checklist, see our Sanctuary of Truth travel tips page.

What Else Is Nearby

The sanctuary pairs well with the rest of North Pattaya. It is a short ride from the top places to visit in Pattaya, and most travellers combine it with the beachfront and the evening buzz of Walking Street. Planning the wider trip? Start with our Pattaya travel guide.

Overall, we had a very good experience with our travel agent. The trip was planned well, all commitments were fulfilled as promised, and the coordination throughout the journey was smooth. The team was responsive, professional, and ensured that transfers, sightseeing, and bookings were arranged prop
erly, making the trip hassle-free. The only major disappointment was the hotel selected in Pattaya. The rooms were quite compact, we encountered cockroaches in the room, and the towels provided were not up to the expected standard. This part of the experience could have been much better. The itinerary was well designed overall; however, for some outdoor attractions, scheduling visits during the evening would have been preferable, especially during the summer season, to avoid the intense daytime heat and make sightseeing more comfortable. Despite these points, we appreciate the effort and support provided by the travel agent. The trip was enjoyable, and with a little more attention to hotel selection and timing of certain activities, the experience could have been excellent.

We recently booked an 11-day, 10-night land package to Thailand with Travtree Holidays, covering Bangkok, Phuket, and Krabi. Traveling with a 2-year-old can be challenging, but the overall experience was smooth and well-coordinated. Our itinerary was packed with great activities. In Bangkok, Safa
ri World was a huge hit with our little one, and the temple tours were beautiful. The Krabi leg was fantastic—the 7 Island Tour and the Jungle Tour were standouts. In Phuket, the Phi Phi Island tour and the Old City tour were both well-managed and enjoyable. Since we only opted for the land package and airport transfers, we relied heavily on their punctuality. The transfers were seamless, which is a massive relief when you’re hauling luggage and a toddler! The only disappointment was the Elephant Sanctuary tour. It felt very rushed, lasting only about an hour and a half, which didn't quite meet our expectations compared to the quality of the other excursions. Overall, we had a wonderful family holiday. Travtree Holidays provided great service and reliable transport. Highly recommended for families looking for a well-organized Thailand experience!

We recently booked our family trip to Thailand with Travtree Holidays, and it turned out to be an absolutely wonderful experience from start to finish. The entire itinerary was very well organized, making the trip smooth and stress-free—especially important when traveling with young children (our ki
ds are 2 and 5 years old). All pick-ups were perfectly on time, and the vehicles provided were clean, comfortable, and spacious, which made commuting easy and relaxing for the whole family. The hotels arranged for us were excellent—family-friendly, comfortable, and conveniently located. Everything was thoughtfully planned, allowing us to enjoy each destination without any hassle. A special mention goes to our visits to Siam Ocean World (sea life) and Safari World & Marine Park. Both experiences were incredibly impressive and became the highlight of our trip. Siam Water World was fantastic for the kids, with exciting views of the sea creatures penguins etc that they thoroughly enjoyed. Safari World was equally amazing—the safari drive and shows were captivating, and seeing the animals up close was a memorable experience for both adults and children. Overall, Travtree Holidays ensured a seamless, enjoyable, and perfectly managed vacation for our family. We truly appreciate their professionalism and attention to detail and would highly recommend them to anyone planning a trip to Thailand—especially families traveling with young kids.

    Pattaya Travel FAQs

What is the entry fee for the Sanctuary of Truth in Pattaya?

Daytime entry is 500 THB for adults and 250 THB for children under about 1.1 metres (roughly Rs 1,300 and Rs 650). Evening tickets cost 700 THB and 350 THB. A free guide, the cultural show and a safety helmet are included, and booking online usually costs a little less than the gate.

What are the Sanctuary of Truth opening hours?

The temple is open daily from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, with last entry about an hour before it closes. Guided tours and cultural shows run at set times through the day. Arrive in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and the busiest crowds, and to catch the woodcarvers still at work.

How much time do you need at the Sanctuary of Truth?

Plan for 90 minutes to two hours. That covers the free guided walk of about 20 to 30 minutes, one cultural show, and time to photograph the west-facing hall. Add another 30 minutes if you want a boat, horse or elephant add-on.

What is the best time of day to visit?

Late afternoon, around 4 pm to 5 pm. The heat drops, morning tour groups have left, and the low sun lights the seaward hall for the sharpest photos. Midday is the hottest and most crowded.

    Is there a dress code?

No. There is no particular dress code.

How do I reach the Sanctuary of Truth?

It is on Soi Naklua 12 in North Pattaya, just off Sukhumvit Road. Take a blue songthaew towards Naklua Market and walk 10 minutes, or use a Grab, tuk-tuk or motorbike taxi. Parking is free if you drive. From Bangkok it is about a two-hour drive.

    Are guides available?

Yes, and they are free. Knowledgeable guides walk you through the history and the carvings roughly every half hour, with English-language tours available.

Why do visitors have to wear a helmet?

The temple is still being carved and repaired overhead, so staff hand every visitor a safety helmet at the entrance. It is a genuine construction-safety measure, not a formality.

Is the Sanctuary of Truth worth visiting?

For most travellers, yes. The all-teak, hand-carved architecture is unlike anything else in Pattaya, the setting on the Gulf is striking, and the 4.40 out of 5 rating from more than 6,500 travellers reflects that. It is a culture and photography stop rather than a temple for worship.

What else is there to do near the sanctuary?

The sanctuary is in North Pattaya, close to the beach and a short ride from the main attractions. You can easily combine it with the Pattaya beachfront and the other top places to visit in the city on the same day.
