The different lakes in Nainital are namely, the Naini Lake, Sattal, Sariyatal, Bhimtal and the Khurpatal Lake. Sarayital, which is 5kms from Nainital is a beautiful lake and a great place to spend some time in solitude and enjoy the beauty of nature. It has the Himalayan Botanical Garden which is a center of study for botanists around the country. Sattal, which is an interlinked group of seven mesmerizing freshwater lakes is a must visit place for the tourists who generally have an eye for picturesque exquisiteness. Khurpatal serves as the source of several natural springs that provide groundwater for human consumption and also serves as a center of fishing.

The word “Naini" is derived from the temple of Goddess Naini which was built on the bank of the lake but later got destroyed due to landslides in the year 1880.
