How Much Does a Budget Kashmir Trip Cost?
A budget Kashmir trip costs roughly Rs 13,000 to Rs 32,000 per person for a 4 to 6 night package, twin-sharing, before you add your flight or train to Srinagar. The number moves with three things: how many nights you stay, how many people share a room and a cab, and which months you travel. The table below is the honest per-person range for a budget package that still includes a decent hotel, daily breakfast and dinner, and a private cab for sightseeing.
| Trip length | Budget cost (per person, from) | What the package usually covers |
|---|---|---|
| 3N / 4D | Rs 13,000 to Rs 16,000 | Srinagar base + one day-trip (Gulmarg or Pahalgam), hotel or houseboat, breakfast & dinner, transfers |
| 4N / 5D | Rs 15,000 to Rs 22,000 | Srinagar + Gulmarg + Pahalgam, hotel, meals (MAP), private cab |
| 5N / 6D | Rs 19,000 to Rs 27,000 | Adds Sonmarg and a houseboat night, all sightseeing transfers |
| 6N / 7D | Rs 24,000 to Rs 32,000 | Full Valley circuit incl Doodhpathri or Yusmarg, extra sightseeing |
Indicative per-person bands, twin-sharing, verified against our live budget catalogue. Your final quote depends on hotel category, travel dates and group size.
Prefer to think in trip styles rather than nights? The same trip splits into three clear budget tiers:
| Budget tier | Per person, 5N/6D (from) | Where you stay | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backpacker / shoestring | Rs 13,000 to Rs 16,000 | Guesthouse or budget hotel, shared cab, day-trips from a Srinagar base | Solo travellers, students, groups of friends |
| Value (most booked) | Rs 18,000 to Rs 24,000 | 3-star hotel plus one houseboat night, private cab, breakfast & dinner | Couples and small families |
| Comfort budget | Rs 25,000 to Rs 32,000 | 3 to 4-star, all private transfers, more sightseeing days | Families who want a little more room |
These are package costs only. Your biggest separate expense is getting to Srinagar. Flights from Delhi start around Rs 4,000 to Rs 7,000 return in the shoulder season, while the train to Jammu or Katra plus a shared cab is the cheapest way in. See our guide to Delhi to Kashmir trains for the current routes and fares.
Cheapest Kashmir Packages by Duration and Group Size
Here are the budget-friendly packages travellers book most often, cheapest first. Every price is per person on twin-sharing and can be customised for your dates and group size. Off-budget items such as the Leh-Ladakh circuits have been kept off this list so what you see is genuinely the cheap end of the range.
| Package | Nights | Price from (per person) | Best for | Key inclusions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kashmir Family Package | 4N / 5D | Rs 15,000 | Families on a budget | Hotel, breakfast & dinner, private cab, sightseeing |
| Budget Kashmir Honeymoon | 5N / 6D | Rs 19,000 | Couples | Houseboat night, cab, meals, Dal Lake shikara |
| Romantic Escapade to Kashmir | 5N / 6D | Rs 21,500 | Couples wanting extra sightseeing | Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, hotel & meals |
| Charming Kashmir Sightseeing | 7N / 8D | Rs 29,500 | A slower, full-Valley trip | Srinagar, Sonmarg, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, transfers |
| Srinagar Sonmarg Pahalgam Gulmarg | 4N / 5D | Rs 30,500 | A fast four-spot circuit | All four bases, hotel, private cab, meals |
The full list of over 100 budget options, with live prices and durations, sits in the bestselling budget packages section further down this page. Every one can be tailored, so if a package is close but not quite right, our travel experts will adjust the hotels, nights or cities to fit your budget.
What's Included and Excluded in a Budget Package
The cheapest packages win by trimming extras, not essentials. Knowing the line between the two is how you avoid a surprise bill in Srinagar. Here is what a standard budget Kashmir package covers and what it does not.
| Included in the package price | Not included (budget separately) |
|---|---|
| Accommodation (budget hotel or houseboat) | Airfare or train fare to Srinagar |
| Daily breakfast and dinner (MAP plan) | Lunches and any meals off the plan |
| Private cab for arrival, departure and sightseeing | Gulmarg Gondola tickets (Phase 1 and 2) |
| All airport and inter-city transfers | Pony rides, sledges, local guides and shikara tips |
| Sightseeing as listed in the itinerary | Entry fees to Mughal Gardens and monuments |
| Driver charges, fuel, tolls and parking | Personal expenses, shopping and anything not listed |
The single most common extra people forget is the Gulmarg Gondola, which is ticketed separately and can add Rs 740 to Rs 1,900 per person depending on the phase you ride. A few honest red flags to watch on very cheap packages: a bare 'transport included' line can mean a shared cab rather than a private one, a 'free' shikara ride is often only the first 30 minutes, and packages priced far below the rest of the market sometimes recover the gap through forced shopping stops. Ask what the cab is, how long the shikara runs, and whether there are any mandatory stops before you pay.
Cheapest Time to Visit Kashmir
The Valley has two peak seasons, high summer (May to July) and the snow window (late December to February). Prices climb in both. To travel Kashmir cheaply, aim for the shoulder months instead: October to early November, and early March before the Tulip Garden weeks lift Srinagar rates. Hotels and houseboats can run 30 to 40 percent below peak rates, the weather is still good for sightseeing, and the same package that costs Rs 27,000 in June often lands closer to Rs 19,000 in October.
Spring brings the almond and tulip blossom and mild days; go in early March for the lower rates, as late March and April book up fast around the Tulip Garden. October holds crisp, clear weather and the chinar leaves turning. If your heart is set on snow, book the shoulder edges of winter (early December or late February) rather than the Christmas-New Year peak. For the full month-by-month snow picture, see our guide to snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, and for what each season looks like across the Valley, the Kashmir tourism guide has the detail.
How to Make Your Kashmir Trip Cheaper
A few deliberate choices can cut a Kashmir trip by several thousand rupees without making it feel cheap. These are the ones our travellers report actually work.
• Base yourself in Srinagar and do day-trips. Staying in one hotel and driving out to Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg each day is cheaper than changing hotels in every town and avoids repeat check-in costs.
• Travel in the shoulder months (October-early November, early March) when hotel rates fall 30 to 40 percent from the summer and snow peaks.
• Take the houseboat for one night, not the whole trip. A single Dal Lake houseboat night gives you the experience; a budget hotel for the rest keeps the total down.
• Share a cab and a room. Group-size pricing drops sharply from solo to twin-sharing to a family of four, because the private cab cost is split.
• Book the package rather than piecing it together on arrival. Bundled hotel-plus-cab-plus-meals rates are usually lower than walk-up prices, and you avoid peak-day surge on cabs.
• Skip what you will not use. If you are not skiing, you do not need the higher Gondola phase; if you are not a rider, decline the pony touts at Pahalgam.
The cheapest way into the Valley is often the train to Jammu or Katra followed by a shared cab, rather than flying in peak week. Our Delhi to Kashmir trains guide lays out the current options and fares.
A Sample Budget Itinerary (5 Nights, from a Srinagar Base)
This is the plan that keeps costs lowest: one comfortable base in Srinagar and easy day-trips out, so you pay for a room once and split the cab each day.
Day 1, Arrive Srinagar
Check in, then an evening shikara ride on Dal Lake. Share the shikara to split the cost.
Day 2, Day-trip to Gulmarg
Meadows, the Gondola if you want it (ticketed separately), back to Srinagar by evening.
Day 3, Day-trip to Pahalgam
Betaab and Aru valleys, the Lidder river; decline the pony touts unless you plan to ride.
Day 4, Day-trip to Sonmarg or Doodhpathri
Sonmarg for glaciers, Doodhpathri for a quieter, cheaper meadow day.
Day 5, Srinagar at leisure
Mughal Gardens, the old city, and shopping at Lal Chowk before your last night.
Day 6, Depart Srinagar
Airport or cab transfer to your onward journey.
Swapping one hotel night for a Dal Lake houseboat night on Day 1 or 5 adds the classic Kashmir experience without changing the routing or the cost much.
6 Popular Places in Kashmir to Never Miss
Every budget package here is built around these six bases. Here is what each is for and how long to give it.
Srinagar
The Valley's largest city and the cheapest base for a budget trip, because you can day-trip everywhere from here. Take a shared shikara on Dal Lake, walk the Mughal Gardens, Nishat and Shalimar, and browse Lal Chowk. Give it 2 to 3 days including day-trips. Timings: all day. Entry fee: none for the lake; small charges apply at the gardens.
Gulmarg
The famous meadow and ski town, and home to the Gondola cable car. In summer it is green golf-course country; in winter it is the Valley's snow hub. A day-trip from Srinagar is enough for most budget travellers. The Gondola is ticketed separately. Timings: all day. Entry fee: none for the meadow.
Pahalgam
The 'valley of shepherds', with the Betaab and Aru valleys and the Lidder river. Good for gentle walks and river time; ride a pony only if you actually want to, as the touts push hard. A full day covers the highlights. Timings: all day. Entry fee: a small ticket at Betaab Valley. Outside cabs, including Srinagar-based package cabs, are not allowed to run to Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari, so budget for a local Pahalgam union taxi for those valleys.
Sonamarg
A meadow of glaciers and the gateway to the Zoji La pass, about a 2 to 3 hour drive from Srinagar. Best as a single long day-trip. The Thajiwas glacier is the main draw. Timings: all day. Entry fee: none.
Yusmarg and Charar-e-Sharif
A quiet, low-cost alternative to the busier meadows, with pine forests, the Doodh Ganga stream and the Charar-e-Sharif shrine nearby. A calm half to full day, and a good way to see the Valley without peak-season crowds or prices. Timings: all day. Entry fee: none.
Sinthan Top
A high pass at about 12,440 feet with wide mountain views, less visited than the main spots, so it stays cheap and uncrowded. Go between June and October; the road is snowbound and closed for much of the winter and spring, roughly November to May. One day is plenty. Timings: all day. Entry fee: none.

Things to Do in Kashmir on a Budget
Most of the Valley's best experiences are cheap or free. Here is where a budget goes furthest:
• Take a shared shikara on Dal Lake at sunset, one of the best-value experiences in India.
• Spend one night on a Dal Lake houseboat for the classic Kashmir stay.
• Ride the Gulmarg Gondola for panoramic Valley views (ticketed separately; choose the phase you will actually use).
• Walk the Mughal Gardens, Nishat, Shalimar and Chashme Shahi, for a few rupees in entry fees.
• Try Kashmiri Wazwan at a local restaurant rather than a hotel to keep the bill down.
• Stroll the old city of Srinagar and Lal Chowk for handicrafts and street food.
• Do the meadow day-trips (Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonmarg, Doodhpathri) from a single Srinagar base to save on hotels.
• Add gentle adventure, river time at Pahalgam, short treks at Sonmarg and Yusmarg, without paid guides for the easy routes.
Shopping and Restaurants in Kashmir
Srinagar's markets, Lal Chowk, Polo View, Badshah Chowk and the Kashmir Government Arts Emporium, are where budget travellers pick up pashminas, Kahwa tea, saffron, dry fruits, walnut-wood pieces, carpets and copperware. Buy from the Government Emporium if you want fixed, fair prices without the bargaining, and always negotiate at the smaller stalls.
For food, the Wazwan is the thing to try, rogan josh, yakhni, dum aloo, goshtaba and Kashmiri muji gaad. Well-known local spots include Mughal Darbar, Ahdoos, Shamyana and Cafe de Linz. Eating at a local restaurant rather than your hotel keeps costs down, and lunch is usually the cheapest meal to buy off the package plan.

FAQs About Kashmir Budget Tour Packages
What is the cheapest Kashmir tour package price?
Budget Kashmir packages on this page start from Rs 15,000 per person for a 4-night, 5-day trip on twin-sharing, including hotel, breakfast and dinner, a private cab and transfers. Shorter 3-night trips can be arranged for less. The price excludes your flight or train to Srinagar.
How much does a Kashmir trip cost per person?
For a budget package, plan on roughly Rs 13,000 to Rs 32,000 per person for 4 to 6 nights, twin-sharing, before travel to Srinagar. A 4N/5D value trip sits around Rs 15,000 to Rs 22,000, while a full 6N/7D Valley circuit runs Rs 24,000 to Rs 32,000. Add your flight or train fare on top.
Which is the cheapest month to visit Kashmir?
October to early November is usually the cheapest window, with early March a close second. Hotel and houseboat rates fall 30 to 40 percent below the summer (May to July) and snow (late December to February) peaks, while the weather stays good for sightseeing. Late March and April can cost more in Srinagar because of the Tulip Garden crowds.
What is included and excluded in a budget Kashmir package?
Included: budget hotel or houseboat, daily breakfast and dinner, a private cab for sightseeing, all transfers, and the sightseeing listed in your itinerary. Excluded: your flight or train to Srinagar, lunches, Gulmarg Gondola tickets, pony rides, entry fees to gardens and monuments, and personal expenses.
Is Kashmir expensive, or is it cheap to travel?
Kashmir can be done cheaply. Food, local transport and many sights are inexpensive, and a shared shikara or a meadow day-trip costs very little. The main costs are your travel to Srinagar and your hotel category, both of which you can control by travelling in the shoulder season and sharing a room and cab.
How can I make my Kashmir trip cheaper?
Base yourself in Srinagar and day-trip out, travel in the shoulder months, take a houseboat for just one night, share a cab and room, and book a bundled package rather than arranging everything on arrival. Taking the train to Jammu or Katra instead of flying in peak week also cuts the cost.
What does a cheap Kashmir package cost for a couple or family?
Because the private cab cost is shared, per-person prices drop as your group grows. A couple typically pays from about Rs 19,000 each for a 5N/6D value package, and a family of four often lands lower per head. Group-size pricing is the single biggest lever on a budget trip.
Is it cheaper to book a package or plan the trip myself?
For most travellers a package is cheaper and simpler. Bundled hotel, cab and meal rates are usually lower than walk-up prices, and you avoid peak-day cab surges and the risk of overpaying local operators. Self-planning only wins if you are staying long in one place and travelling very light.
What hidden costs should I watch for in a cheap package?
Check whether 'transport included' means a private cab or a shared one, how long a 'free' shikara actually runs, and whether the itinerary has mandatory shopping stops. Gondola tickets, pony rides and garden entry fees are almost always extra. Ask these before you pay.
How many days are enough for a budget Kashmir trip?
Five nights and six days is the sweet spot: enough to cover Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg without rushing, and still affordable. If your budget or time is tighter, a 3N/4D Srinagar-plus-one-day-trip works; 6N/7D adds Doodhpathri or Yusmarg for a slower pace.
Is it safe to travel to Kashmir?
Yes. Tourist areas across the Valley, Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg, are well set up for visitors and see large numbers of travellers each season. As anywhere, check current local advisories before you travel and keep to daytime driving on the mountain roads.
When can I see snowfall in Kashmir?
Snowfall usually runs from late December to March, with Gulmarg the most reliable spot; Sonmarg holds snow into spring. For the cheapest snow trip, book the shoulder edges of winter, early December or late February, rather than the Christmas and New Year peak.
How do I reach Kashmir, and what is the cheapest way?
The quickest way is a flight to Srinagar airport (SXR), about 12 km from the city, with direct services from Delhi and other metros. The cheapest way is usually the train to Jammu or Katra followed by a shared cab into the Valley. Flying in the shoulder season keeps airfare low.
Can I customise a budget Kashmir package?
Yes. Every package here is fully customisable. You can change the hotels, the number of nights, the cities covered and the departure dates, and our travel experts will re-quote to keep it within your budget. Tell us your target price and we will build the trip around it.
