About Beypore in Kozhikode
Beypore in Kozhikode district of Kerala is an ancient port city. It is also the second-largest port in Kerala after Cochin. Initially, it was known as Vaypura and was renamed as Sultan Pattanam by Tipu Sultan. The small town on the Arabian Sea is popular for building wooden ships and these ships are called Uru in the local language of people in Kerala. The Beypore Port has played an important role in trading with the Middle East. Arab merchants purchased wooden ships from Beypore. The port still stands and serves the purpose of trading and also is a leading fishing harbor.
History of Beypore
Four Kingdoms ruled Beypore known as Karippa Puthiyakovilakam, Manayat Kovilakam, Nediyaal Kovilakam, and Panagad Kovilakam. The place was also visited by the Romans, Arabs, Chineses, Syrians, and Europeans for trade. The city played a vital role in strengthening trade ties with the rest of the world. The art and craft of shipbuilding are believed to be 1500 years old however, it is difficult to find out the exact period.
Art of Building Uru
Vishwabrahmins from the southwestern coast of India are known for building Uru, which is a large Dhow type wooden ships. These ships are famous among Arabs for the purpose of fishing and trading purposes. For a long time, Arabs have been purchasing these large structures from Beypore. The wood used for making the boat is primarily teak wood along with a different kind of other woods. Teak wood is fetched from Nilambur forests. The history of making Uru cannot be traced back but can be concluded that these boats existed in the period of Mesopotamia civilization. The people of Beypore are known for their art and craftsmanship of building boats.
