History of Kappad Beach
Playing a pivotal role in the history of southern state of Kerala, Kappad Beach, Kozhikode was first discovered by the popular Potugese explorer Vasco Da Gama in the 15th century, when he first stepped on the shores of Kerala in order to find a sea route to enter the nation. And, his group of about 170 sailors was well-received by the then local ruler- the Zamorin of Calicut. The landing of Vasco Da Gama later encouraged some more visits, and India became a British Colony till the time of freedom in the year 1947. The single act of Vasco Da Gama was quite forceful to change the history of Indian subcontinent and affect the same of Europe significantly as well. There is also a monument erected on the beach that commemorates this historic moment with the inscriptions reading the landing of Vasco Da Gama in Kappad Beach.
