Tiger Cave Temple In Krabi

Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi, Thailand

Marvel at the majestic beauty of Tiger Cave Temple

Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6533 reviews )

Wat Tham Suea, the Tiger Cave Temple, is the climb everyone in Krabi talks about and the one most first-timers underestimate. It sits on a wooded limestone hill about 9 km northeast of Krabi Town, and the reward at the top is a golden Buddha with a full sweep over the province's karst cliffs and the Andaman coast. Getting up there means a staircase, and a serious one. The old sign at the base still reads 1,237 steps, but a renovated section pushed the real count to about 1,260, climbing roughly 300 metres to the summit. Entry is free, the gates open at dawn, and the sensible move is to start before sunrise while it is still cool and the macaques are quiet. Below is what it costs, how to reach it from Krabi Town or Ao Nang, and what the climb is honestly like.

Tiger Cave Temple at a Glance

The quick facts, so you can plan the morning before you read another word.

Also known as Wat Tham Suea (Tiger Cave Temple)
Location Wooded limestone hill, about 9 km northeast of Krabi Town
Distance from Ao Nang About 23 km, roughly 30 minutes by road
Opening hours Daily from dawn; staffed until about 6:30 PM (be off the staircase by dusk)
Entry fee Free; a small donation for temple upkeep is welcome
Steps to the summit About 1,260 (the old base sign still reads 1,237)
Summit height Around 300 metres above the plain
Climb time 30 to 60 minutes, depending on fitness
Best time to visit Sunrise, for cool air and an almost empty staircase
Dress code Shoulders and knees covered; sarongs available to rent at the base

How to Reach Tiger Cave Temple

The temple is close enough to Krabi Town for a short hop and far enough from Ao Nang that you will want to plan the ride. There is no train or public bus to the gate, so it comes down to a shared songthaew, a taxi or Grab, or your own scooter. Fares below are one-way and typical for 2026; agree the price before you get in.

From Songthaew (shared) Taxi / Grab (private) Drive time
Krabi Town (~9 km) ~50 to 60 THB per person ~300 to 400 THB one way 15 to 20 min
Ao Nang (~23 km) ~150 THB per person, direct from about 6:30 AM ~500 to 600 THB one way (about 1,000 THB return) ~30 min

If you prefer your own wheels, a scooter rents for about 200 to 300 THB a day and there is free parking at the base of the staircase. Songthaews from Ao Nang run roughly every ten minutes through the morning, but they thin out after lunch, so fix your return before you climb.

Where to base yourself

Stay in Krabi Town if the temple and the local markets are your priority; it is the cheapest, closest base and the songthaew fare is trivial. Choose Ao Nang if you want the beach, the island piers and the nightlife, and treat the temple as an early half-day trip out. Either way, book the ride the night before so you are climbing at first light.

The Climb: 1,260 Steps to the Summit

This is the part people remember. The staircase runs straight up the side of the hill with next to no flat sections, and some of the steps are more than a foot high, so it is as much a scramble as a walk. The base sign reads 1,237, a number that stuck from before a renovated stretch was added, and the honest current count is about 1,260. Markers appear roughly every 100 steps, which sounds encouraging and quietly becomes the only thing you look at by step 800.

Give yourself 30 to 60 minutes depending on how often you stop, and carry more water than you think you need; the hill is exposed and Krabi mornings warm up fast. Troops of macaques line the lower steps. They look harmless and will happily unzip a bag, so keep water, phones and snacks inside a closed backpack rather than in your hands. There is no shame in resting at the markers. It is not a race, and the view does not go anywhere.

The History and the Name

The temple was founded in 1975, when a Buddhist monk named Jumnean Seelasettho chose the caves in the hillside for meditation. The name, Wat Tham Suea or Tiger Cave Temple, comes from the site's oldest stories: locals say tigers once roamed the cave and its forest, and paw-print impressions in the cave walls are still pointed out to visitors today. The forest around the complex is treated as sacred, and the lower caves remain a working meditation centre where monks have practised for decades. That is worth remembering on the way up: for all the step-count bragging rights, this is first a place of worship and second a viewpoint.

The Summit: Golden Buddha and the View

At the top a large golden Buddha looks out over the plain, ringed by shrines, smaller statues and a chedi. The reward for the climb is the panorama: a bird's eye view across Krabi Town, the surrounding cliffs and the mountains folding away toward the coast. On a clear morning you can trace the karst formations all the way to the sea. The statues are brightly painted and detailed, and there is usually space and quiet up here early, before the mid-morning groups arrive. Most people agree, somewhere around the last hundred steps, that the burning thighs were worth it.

Best Time to Visit: Sunrise or Sunset?

Go at sunrise. Start the climb in the dark and you top out to cool air, an almost empty staircase and soft light over the cliffs, with the macaques still dozing. Sunset delivers its own show, but the evening is hotter on the way up, the steps are busier, and you are racing the light on the descent. If you can only do one, make it the early start. The dry season, November to March, gives the clearest mornings; through the wetter months a dawn window still beats the afternoon heat and the risk of a slippery descent.

Dress Code, Entry Fee and Etiquette

There is no ticket to enter. The grounds are free and the donation boxes around the complex go toward upkeep, so drop in what you can. Because it is an active temple, dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered for everyone. Women can wrap a sarong over shorts or a short skirt, and sarongs are available to rent cheaply at the base if you arrive underdressed. Wear proper shoes rather than flip-flops for the climb, and expect to sweat through whatever you pick, so light and quick-drying beats fashionable. Keep your voice down near the shrines and the meditating monks.

Combine Your Visit: Emerald Pool and Krabi Hot Springs

The temple is a two-to-three-hour stop, which makes it the natural first leg of an inland Krabi day trip rather than a whole day on its own. The classic pairing is the Tiger Cave Temple at dawn, then the Emerald Pool (Sra Morakot) in the Khao Phra Bang Khram forest for a cool freshwater swim, and the nearby Krabi Hot Springs to finish, all within easy driving distance to the east of Krabi Town. If you would rather stay by the water, it also slots neatly around a morning at Railay Beach or an island run to Koh Poda. A single driver for the temple, the pool and the springs is the least stressful way to link them, and it is exactly the kind of routing a local operator sorts in one booking.

Tiger Cave Temple Tours from Krabi and Ao Nang

You can absolutely do the temple independently, but a guided half-day takes the guesswork out of the transport, the timing and the combo stops. TravelTriangle builds the temple into wider Krabi and Thailand tour packages, so the dawn climb, the Emerald Pool swim and the hot springs come stitched into one itinerary with a private vehicle and pickup from your Krabi Town or Ao Nang hotel.

"Book the sunrise slot and start climbing by about 5:30 in the dry season," says the TravelTriangle Krabi desk, which packages the temple with the Emerald Pool and the hot springs. "You beat the heat, the tour buses and the worst of the macaques, and you are still soaking in the springs by mid-morning." Fares, timings and the combo routing on this page are cross-checked by our Krabi desk against current operator schedules.

Yugal was our travel agent. He was always available from the day we booked the trip till we completed our trip. He was always a call away and was helpful to resolve all the queries. His commitment was commendable. We took 4 night 5 days package. The hotels we stayed were fortunately good. Cab serv
ices were not as much cooperative as expected. I would suggest to include most imp tourist spots of bangkok/pattaya in basic package itself. Like we had a bangkok city tour in our package but reclining budha/watarun temple was not part of it. Better to have it included in basic packages which would improve customer satisfaction. But overall it was a good and hustle free experience.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Get your answers — before you plan your trip.

    Krabi Travel FAQs

How many steps are there at Tiger Cave Temple?

About 1,260 to reach the summit. The old sign at the base reads 1,237, a count from before a section of the staircase was rebuilt, so you will see both numbers quoted. Either way it is a steep, continuous climb of roughly 300 metres that most people finish in 30 to 60 minutes.

    What are the opening hours?

The grounds are open daily from dawn and are staffed until about 6:30 PM, with signs asking visitors to be off the staircase by dusk. Sunrise is the best time to climb, so many people start in the dark and reach the top as the light comes up.

How much is the entry fee?

There is no entry fee. The temple is free to visit, and donation boxes around the complex let you contribute toward its upkeep if you wish.

How do I get to Tiger Cave Temple from Ao Nang?

It is about 23 km, or roughly 30 minutes by road. A direct shared songthaew from Ao Nang costs around 150 THB per person and runs from about 6:30 AM, while a private taxi or Grab is about 500 to 600 THB one way. Fix your return ride before you climb, as songthaews thin out after midday.

How do I get there from Krabi Town?

Krabi Town is the closest base, about 9 km and 15 to 20 minutes away. A shared songthaew is around 50 to 60 THB per person and a taxi or Grab about 300 to 400 THB one way. A scooter (roughly 200 to 300 THB a day) also works, with free parking at the base.

How hard is the climb, and how fit do I need to be?

It is genuinely strenuous. The 1,260 steps go almost straight up with barely a flat section, and some steps are over a foot high. You do not need to be an athlete, but reasonable fitness helps. Carry plenty of water, rest at the markers every 100 steps, and allow 30 to 60 minutes. Anyone with knee or heart trouble should think twice.

    What should I wear?

Cover your shoulders and knees, as this is an active temple. A sarong over shorts or a short skirt works, and sarongs are available to rent cheaply at the base. Wear proper shoes rather than flip-flops for the steps, and pick light, quick-drying clothing, because you will sweat on the way up.

What else can I combine with a Tiger Cave Temple visit?

The temple pairs perfectly with an inland Krabi day trip. The usual loop adds the Emerald Pool (Sra Morakot) for a freshwater swim and the Krabi Hot Springs, all a short drive east of Krabi Town. If you would rather stay coastal, it also fits around a morning at Railay Beach or an island trip to Koh Poda. A single guided package handles the routing and pickups for you.
