Hong Island In Krabi

Hong Island, Krabi: The Koh Hong Lagoon, Island-Hopping and the 360-Degree Viewpoint

Explore the majestic and mystical beauty of the breath-taking Hong Island

Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6533 reviews )

Hong Island is the day trip most people picture when they imagine Krabi from a boat: a hooked limestone island wrapped around a shallow, jade-green lagoon you paddle straight into. It sits inside the Than Bok Khorani National Park, about 6 km off the Ao Nang coast, roughly a 30-minute longtail ride away. Koh Hong (the Thai name, koh meaning island) is the main stop, but the real draw is the wider cluster it anchors, plus a 360-degree viewpoint that rewards a short, steep climb. This guide covers what you actually see, the best time to go, and what a day trip costs an Indian traveller, then points you to our sub-pages for booking a boat and paying the park fee.

Hong Island in five quick points

Read this first, then dive into the sections below.

• Go for the Koh Hong lagoon: a near-enclosed emerald pool ringed by cliffs, calm enough to swim and kayak.

• Climb the 360-degree viewpoint (roughly 420 steps) for the postcard shot of the twin bays below.

• It is a day-use national park. No one stays overnight, and boats run through the daytime only.

• Best season is roughly December to March, and a morning start beats both the crowds and the low afternoon tide.

• Budget around Rs 850 to Rs 1,150 per person for the park fee, plus the boat, on top of your tour.

Hong Island at a glance, with costs in rupees

Hong Island works as a half-day or full-day boat trip from Ao Nang, Nopparat Thara pier or Railay. You do not book the island itself. You book a shared or private longtail, or a speedboat island-hopping tour, and pay the national park entry fee on arrival. The table below is an indicative snapshot for an Indian traveller. Because the exact fee and the boat fares are the two things that change, we keep the authoritative numbers on their own pages and link them here.

What you pay for Indicative THB Approx. INR (per person) Where to confirm
National park entry (Than Bok Khorani) 300 to 400 THB Rs 850 to Rs 1,150 See the entry-fees page
Shared longtail day trip from Ao Nang from ~1,100 THB from ~Rs 3,100 See how to reach
Speedboat island-hopping tour ~1,350 THB ~Rs 3,850 See how to reach
Private longtail (up to 6 people) ~3,000 THB ~Rs 8,500 total See how to reach

The park fee is charged on the island. For the current amount and the child rate, see our Hong Island entry-fees page, which is kept up to date. To pick and book a boat, and to compare pickup points, use our how to reach Hong Island guide. A quick word on trust: our Krabi boat desk tells travellers to take the earlier departure in the shoulder months because afternoon cancellations are more common when the wind picks up.

Where Hong Island sits: the national park and the piers

Hong Island belongs to the Than Bok Khorani National Park, which spreads across a scatter of islands and mainland mangrove off Krabi's west coast. That national park status is why you pay an entry fee and why there is no resort, no shop and no overnight stay: the island is protected day-use land, and the money goes to keeping it that way. It is a useful thing to know before you go, because it sets the tone for the whole trip, low-key, natural and boat-in, boat-out.

Most day trips leave from one of three points. Ao Nang beach is the busiest and has the widest choice of shared tours. Nopparat Thara pier, a couple of kilometres up the coast, is the main departure jetty for many longtail and speedboat operators and is where a lot of pickups actually board. Railay works too if you are already staying there. Wherever you leave from, the crossing is short, so the pier you use matters less than the time you leave: earlier boats mean a fuller lagoon and a quieter viewpoint.

The Hong Island cluster: Koh Hong, Koh Lao Lading, Koh Pak Bia and Koh Rai

Most trips sold as a Hong Island tour are really a short hop around four islands, and knowing them by name helps you read an itinerary before you pay for it.

Koh Hong

The main island and the one you spend most time on. It holds the signature lagoon, the beach and the viewpoint, so a good tour gives you two to three hours here rather than a rushed photo stop.

Koh Lao Lading

A tiny island with a slim strip of pale sand and shallow water that turns a bright turquoise at mid-tide. It is the classic swimming and swing-photo stop, and it gets busy, so it is better early.

Koh Pak Bia

A sandbar island that all but disappears at high tide and opens into a wide, walkable spit at low tide. Whether you get the sandbar or the swim depends entirely on when your boat arrives, which is one more reason a morning slot pays off.

Koh Rai

The quietest of the four and often the snorkelling stop, with calmer water on its sheltered side. Not every tour includes it, so if a reef stop matters to you, check that Koh Rai is on the route.

If you would rather build a wider day around Krabi's islands, our roundup of the best places to visit in Krabi and the best beaches in Krabi shows how Hong Island pairs with Railay and the Phi Phi group.

Hong Lagoon, the emerald pool that gives the island its name

The lagoon is the reason Hong Island tops most Krabi shortlists. Limestone walls curl almost the whole way around a shallow basin, so the water sits still and shades from clear to deep jade depending on the light. Longtails nose in through a narrow gap and cut the engine, and you can swim or kayak across it in flat, protected water. It is shallow enough that non-swimmers wading near the edge feel safe, though a life jacket is sensible and usually included.

Two practical notes decide how the lagoon looks on the day. Tide is the first: at low water the basin drains to ankle depth in places and loses its colour, while a rising or high tide gives you the full pool. Light is the second: mid-morning sun, high enough to reach the water but before the midday glare, brings out the green. Drone flying is restricted inside the national park, so plan to shoot from the water rather than the air.

The 360-degree viewpoint and the climb up

Behind the beach a marked trail climbs to a platform that looks down on Hong Island's two bays meeting at a thin neck of sand, the single most photographed view on the island. It is roughly 420 steps and takes most people 20 to 30 minutes up, on stairs and boardwalk that are steep in stretches with rope and rail to hold. Wear proper shoes, not flip-flops, and carry water, because there is little shade on the way and only a small shaded platform at the top.

Go up early or late. In the middle of the day the steps bake and the platform fills, so a group that reaches the island in the first boats can climb before the heat and have the view to themselves. If the climb is not for you, the beach and lagoon below are worth the trip on their own.

Koh Hong beach, snorkelling and kayaking

The main beach is a curve of soft, pale sand backed by jungle and cliffs, with water calm enough for a relaxed swim rather than surf. It is where most tours break for lunch or a rest between the lagoon and the viewpoint.

Snorkelling here is gentle rather than spectacular. Expect small reef fish and patches of coral in the shallows around Koh Hong and, on tours that include it, better visibility off Koh Rai. Bring your own mask if you have one, since rental gear on the boats is basic. Kayaks are the other easy win: paddling into the lagoon and along the cliff base is the calmest, most scenic way to see the island, and a sunset paddle is a favourite on full-day trips that stay late. There is no dive centre on the island itself, so scuba is arranged as a separate trip, not bolted onto a Hong Island day tour.

Best time to visit, and the tide window that matters

The reliable season is roughly December to March, Krabi's dry months, when seas are calm, skies are clear and the lagoon is at its best. This is also peak season, so islands like Koh Lao Lading fill up and boats book out ahead. April and May stay largely dry but hot. From about June to October the southwest monsoon brings rougher water and more cancellations, and some longtail operators pause on the worst days.

On any given day, timing beats season. Aim to reach the island in the morning, ideally before around 2 pm, for two reasons that reinforce each other. Crowds thin in the early hours before the big speedboat groups land, and the tide tends to sit higher, which keeps the lagoon full and the sandbars swimmable. A late-afternoon arrival can mean a drained lagoon and a packed viewpoint at the same time.

For a month-by-month read across all of Krabi, not just this island, see our best time to visit Krabi guide.

Getting there: longtail vs speedboat at a glance

Hong Island is boat-only. You reach it from Ao Nang, Nopparat Thara pier or Railay, and the choice comes down to a traditional longtail or a faster speedboat. This is a snapshot to help you decide. For live fares, pickup points and how to book, use the full guide linked below so you are working from current prices.

Boat Ao Nang to Hong Island Best for Indicative cost
Shared longtail ~45 to 50 min Budget trips, a slower and more scenic ride from ~Rs 3,100 pp
Speedboat tour ~25 to 30 min Covering more of the cluster in a day ~Rs 3,850 pp
Private longtail ~45 to 50 min Families or groups wanting their own timings ~Rs 8,500 total

A shared longtail is the cheapest and most atmospheric option, a speedboat buys you more time on the other islands, and a private longtail lets a family set its own pace and beat the crowds to the lagoon. To choose a pickup point and book, see our how to reach Hong Island guide. Hong Island also slots neatly next to Railay Beach and Ao Nang on a multi-day Krabi plan, or as a calmer alternative to the busier Phi Phi islands.

Fit Hong Island into your Krabi plan

Hong Island earns its place near the top of any Krabi itinerary: one island, one lagoon, one viewpoint, and a calm day on the water. Pair it with Railay and the rest of the places to visit in Krabi, sort your boat on the how to reach page and your fee on the entry-fees page, and you have a day trip planned. When you are ready to put the whole trip together, our Krabi travel guide ties the islands, beaches and logistics into one plan.

But overall it was a good and hustle free experience.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Get your answers — before you plan your trip.

    Krabi Travel FAQs

    Is Hong Island worth visiting?

Yes, and for many travellers it is the highlight of a Krabi trip. The enclosed Koh Hong lagoon, the 360-degree viewpoint and the calm swimming beach pack a lot into one day, and the island group is less crowded than Phi Phi. Go in the morning to see it at its best.

How much is the Hong Island entrance fee?

You pay a Than Bok Khorani National Park fee on arrival, which for foreign visitors works out to roughly Rs 850 to Rs 1,150 per adult, with a lower child rate. This is separate from your boat or tour cost. Our entry-fees page carries the current, confirmed amount.

How do you get to Hong Island from Krabi?

By boat only, from Ao Nang, Nopparat Thara pier or Railay. A shared longtail takes about 45 to 50 minutes and a speedboat around 25 to 30. You can join a shared tour or hire a private longtail. Our how to reach guide compares pickup points and current fares.

Can you stay overnight on Hong Island?

No. Hong Island is a day-use national park with no hotels or resorts, and boats run in the daytime only. You visit on a half-day or full-day trip and return to the mainland by evening. For a bed nearby, base yourself in Ao Nang or Railay and day-trip out.

How many steps are there to the Hong Island viewpoint?

The climb to the 360-degree viewpoint is roughly 420 steps and takes most people 20 to 30 minutes. The stairs and boardwalk are steep in places with ropes and rails to hold. Wear proper shoes, carry water, and go early or late to avoid the midday heat.

What is the best time to visit Hong Island?

December to March is the calmest, clearest season and the best window overall. Whenever you go, aim to arrive in the morning, ideally before about 2 pm, so you beat the speedboat crowds and catch a higher tide that keeps the lagoon full and the sandbars swimmable.

Is Hong Island better than Phi Phi?

They are different trips. Phi Phi is livelier, more famous and busier, while the Hong Island cluster is quieter and built around one standout lagoon and viewpoint. If you want calm water, fewer boats and a shorter ride from Ao Nang, Hong Island is the easier, more relaxed day out.

How far is Hong Island from Krabi and Ao Nang?

Hong Island sits about 6 km off the Ao Nang coast, roughly a 30-minute longtail ride, and a little further from Krabi Town and the airport, which are inland. Most travellers base in Ao Nang or Railay and leave from the nearest pier.

Can you snorkel at Hong Island?

Yes, in a gentle way. There are small reef fish and coral patches in the shallows around Koh Hong, and tours that stop at Koh Rai usually offer clearer water. It suits beginners and families rather than serious divers. Bring your own mask if you can, as rental gear on the boats is basic.

Do you need to book the Hong Island tour in advance?

In peak season, from December to March, yes. Boats and the popular speedboat slots fill up, especially for morning departures and weekends. In quieter months you can often book a day ahead in Ao Nang, but a morning start is worth reserving either way.

Are there toilets and food on Hong Island?

There are basic toilet and changing facilities near the main beach, and most tours include a packed lunch or a stop for one, but there are no shops or restaurants on the island. Carry water, sunscreen and some cash, and take all your rubbish back with you.

What should you pack for a Hong Island day trip?

Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, quick-dry clothes and swimwear, proper shoes for the viewpoint steps, a dry bag for your phone, and a little cash in baht for the park fee and drinks. A snorkel mask and a light rain layer in shoulder season are useful extras.
