Koh Lanta In Krabi

Koh Lanta, Krabi: Beaches, Island-Hopping and a Rupee-Wise Trip Planner

Enjoy the natural beauty of Koh Lanta Islands and have an incredible holiday experience

Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6533 reviews )

Koh Lanta is the calm end of Krabi. While Ao Nang and Phi Phi run on day-boats and beach bars, this long island an hour or so south trades the crowds for a string of west-facing beaches, a slow Old Town of stilt houses, and some of the best diving in the Andaman within reach. It sits at the southern edge of Krabi province, and the main island you visit is Koh Lanta Yai. This guide is the overview: which beach suits you, what there is to do beyond the sand, the island-hopping day trips worth booking, how to get there, when to go, and what a trip costs an Indian traveller in rupees. For the deep dives on food, resorts and full itineraries, we point you to our Koh Lanta guides as we go.

Koh Lanta in five quick points

Read this first, then jump to the section you need.

• Come here to slow down: six main beaches down the west coast, sunset over the sea every evening, and far fewer boats than Phi Phi.

• Base yourself by beach type. Klong Dao suits families and first-timers, Phra Ae (Long Beach) suits a bit of buzz, and the south is quieter and pricier.

• The bookable core is island-hopping: the 4 Islands tour with Emerald Cave, plus Koh Rok and Koh Haa for snorkelling and diving.

• Rent a scooter to explore, and give yourself at least 3 nights. A day is not enough to reach the south and the national park.

• Go November to April for calm seas. From roughly May to October many businesses, ferries and the national park scale right back.

Koh Lanta at a glance

Koh Lanta works best as a 3-to-5-night base rather than a day trip. It is a driving island, so most people pick a beach, settle in, and rent a scooter to reach the rest. The snapshot below is the fast orientation. The sections that follow unpack each line.

What to know The short answer
Where it is Southern Krabi province; the main island is Koh Lanta Yai
Getting there Minivan plus a short car ferry, or a ferry / speedboat from Krabi, Ao Nang or Phi Phi
Best time November to April (dry, calm); low season is quiet and many places close
Days needed 3 to 5 nights to cover the beaches, a day trip and the national park
The vibe Laid-back, beachy and low-rise; sunsets, not big nightlife
Getting around Scooter is king; taxis and songthaews exist but are limited
Rough budget Around Rs 3,500 to Rs 7,000 per person a day, trips and stay depending

Best beaches in Koh Lanta: which one is for you

Almost all of Koh Lanta's beaches run down the west coast of Koh Lanta Yai, which means every one of them faces the sunset. They are not interchangeable, though. The north is developed and family-friendly, and the further south you drive, the quieter and more expensive it gets. Pick your beach first, because it decides the feel of your whole trip.

Beach Best for What it is like
Klong Dao Families, first-timers Wide, flat, calm swimming; closest to Saladan pier and shops
Phra Ae (Long Beach) A bit of buzz on a budget Long sandy strip, the widest choice of bars, cafes and cheap stays
Klong Khong Backpackers, sunsets Rocky at low tide but the classic fire-show and beach-bar strip
Klong Nin Couples wanting the middle ground Mid-island, relaxed, a small village and a swimmable beach
Kantiang Bay Scenic splurge A curved bay backed by hills; upmarket resorts, few crowds
Bamboo Beach (Klong Jark) Getting away from it all Far south, small and quiet, near the national park

If you want the full beach-by-beach rundown with where to stay on each, our guide to the beaches of Koh Lanta goes deeper, and our roundup of the best resorts in Koh Lanta matches hotels to each stretch of sand. As a rule of thumb, stay north around Klong Dao or Phra Ae for your first visit and easy access, and head south to Klong Nin or Kantiang if you have been before and want it quieter.

Best things to do in Koh Lanta beyond the beach

The beaches are the reason most people come, but a few nights here reward you for looking past them. Here is what earns a spot on the list.

Wander Koh Lanta Old Town

On the quieter east coast, the Old Town is a single street of century-old Chinese-Thai shophouses and sea-gypsy stilt homes built out over the water. It is the island's heart before tourism, with a few wooden piers, small cafes and craft shops, and a working fishing community. Come late afternoon, walk the pier, and stay for an early seafood dinner over the water.

Visit Lanta Animal Welfare

This well-known rescue centre in the north cares for the island's stray dogs and cats. You can join a free guided tour, meet the animals, or sign up to walk a dog for an afternoon, which is a genuinely different way to spend a morning and popular with families. Booking a tour slot ahead is wise in high season.

Catch a fire show and a sunset bar

Koh Lanta nightlife is low-key by Thai-island standards, and that is the point. The action is beach bars rather than clubs. Klong Khong is the best-known strip for fire shows after dark, and spots like Mango House and the bars along Phra Ae and Klong Khong are easy places to watch the sun drop with a drink. Do not expect Phi Phi-style parties, expect bonfires, reggae and the tide.

Kayak the mangroves and Khlong Chak

The east side of the island hides mangrove channels and sea caves you can paddle into by kayak, and a short jungle trek inland leads to the Khlong Chak Waterfall, which runs best in and just after the green season. It is a half-day off the beach and a good rainy-morning plan.

For the wider list, including cooking classes, viewpoints and the smaller sights, see our full things to do in Koh Lanta guide, the Khlong Chak Waterfall trek walk-through, and, if you are here over the turn of the year, our roundup of the best New Year parties in Thailand, where Koh Lanta's beach countdowns get a mention.

Island-hopping day trips from Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta is one of the best launch pads in the Andaman for a day on the water, because the marine parks to its south are closer from here than from anywhere else in Krabi. These are the trips worth booking.

The 4 Islands tour and Emerald Cave

The signature day out. A speedboat or longtail loops Koh Muk, Koh Kradan, Koh Chuek and Koh Ngai, and the highlight is the Emerald Cave (Tham Morakot) on Koh Muk. You swim through a dark 80-metre tunnel in the cliff that opens into a hidden lagoon ringed by jungle and sky. Bring a waterproof torch or stay with the guide, because part of the swim is pitch black.

Koh Rok

A pair of tiny uninhabited islands south of Lanta with some of the clearest water and healthiest coral in the region, protected inside Mu Ko Lanta National Park. It is a snorkelling day trip, usually by speedboat, and the reef here is a step up from the beaches on Lanta itself.

Koh Haa

Five limestone islets that are a favourite of divers and snorkellers alike, known for a bright underwater chamber called the Cathedral and easy, clear conditions. Day trips run from Lanta by speedboat, and it doubles as a first-timer dive site.

Koh Phi Phi as a day trip

Phi Phi is close enough to visit for the day from Lanta if you want the famous bays without staying in the crowds. It makes a long day, so an early speedboat is the way to do it.

For how these islands connect and a wider Krabi island plan, see our roundup of the best places to visit in Krabi, and if the Phi Phi group is on your list, the Ko Phi Phi Le guide covers Maya Bay and the lagoon.

Mu Ko Lanta National Park

The southern tip of Koh Lanta Yai is a protected headland, and it is worth the drive down. A short nature trail loops through the forest to an old white lighthouse on the point, with the sea on both sides and a real chance of spotting the resident dusky-leaf monkeys in the trees. There is a small swimming beach below and a picnic area under the pines.

You pay a national park entry fee at the gate, and it keeps daytime hours. Because the road down is slow and the park sits at the far end of the island, pair it with a morning at Bamboo Beach or Kantiang and make an afternoon of it rather than a rushed stop.

The exact entry fee and opening hours are on our Koh Lanta entry-fees page and timings page, which we keep current.

Diving and snorkelling from Koh Lanta

Lanta is a serious dive base in the season, and this is one area where it beats the busier Krabi beaches. The two headline sites are Hin Daeng and Hin Muang, a pair of deep-water pinnacles a couple of hours south that draw manta rays and, in the right months, the occasional whale shark. They are among the best-rated dives in Thailand. Closer in, Koh Haa and Koh Rok give easy, clear conditions that suit beginners, try-dives and snorkellers.

Dive shops cluster around Saladan in the north and run daily boats through the season. If you have never dived, a Discover Scuba day at Koh Haa is the gentle introduction. Note that the big pinnacle trips only run reliably in the dry months, so this is a November-to-April plan.

How to reach Koh Lanta and getting around

Koh Lanta is not on the way to anywhere, which is part of why it stays calm. Most travellers come by minivan from Krabi Town, Krabi airport or Ao Nang, a ride of roughly two hours that now crosses to Koh Lanta Yai on one short car ferry, since the Siri Lanta bridge links the mainland to Koh Lanta Noi next door. In the high season you can also arrive by passenger ferry or speedboat from Krabi, Ao Nang, Phi Phi or Phuket, which is slower but scenic.

Once you are on the island, a scooter is how nearly everyone gets around. The west-coast road runs the length of the island, distances between beaches are real, and taxis are limited and pricey, so a rented scooter buys you the freedom to reach the Old Town and the national park on your own clock. Ride carefully, wear the helmet, and check your travel insurance covers you. Our Krabi trips desk tells travellers to book the minivan-plus-ferry transfer a day ahead in peak season, because the last convenient crossings fill up fast.

For the full route options, current transfer fares and pier details, use our how to reach Koh Lanta guide. Practical on-the-ground pointers, from scooter hire to what to pack, are on the Koh Lanta tips page.

Best time to visit Koh Lanta, and the low-season reality

The reliable window is November to April, Krabi's dry season, when the seas are calm, the island-hopping boats all run and the west-coast sunsets are at their best. December to February is the peak, so book beaches and dive slots ahead. March and April stay dry but turn hot.

The part rivals gloss over is what happens the rest of the year. From about May to October the southwest monsoon brings rougher water, and Koh Lanta genuinely winds down: many resorts, restaurants and dive shops close, ferry schedules thin out, and parts of Mu Ko Lanta National Park and the outer-island trips shut for the season. It can be a fine time for a quiet, cheap, green-season stay if you keep to the north and drive rather than boat, but go in knowing the island is half-asleep, not because a website forgot to mention it.

For a month-by-month read across all of Krabi, see our best time to visit Krabi guide.

What Koh Lanta costs: a rupee snapshot

Koh Lanta is mid-range for a Thai island. It is not backpacker-cheap like it once was, but it is easier on the wallet than Phuket or Samui. The table below is an indicative guide for an Indian traveller, converted at roughly Rs 2.85 to the baht. Treat these as ranges to plan around, not fixed prices, and confirm the fee and fares on the day.

What you pay for Indicative THB Approx. INR Where to confirm
Mu Ko Lanta National Park entry (adult) ~200 THB ~Rs 570 See the entry-fees page
Scooter rental, per day 200 to 300 THB Rs 570 to Rs 850 Pay on the island
4 Islands + Emerald Cave day trip 1,300 to 1,800 THB Rs 3,700 to Rs 5,100 Book locally / with us
Koh Rok snorkel day trip (speedboat) 1,800 to 2,500 THB Rs 5,100 to Rs 7,100 Book locally / with us
Krabi to Koh Lanta minivan transfer 300 to 450 THB Rs 850 to Rs 1,300 See how to reach
Mid-range beach room, per night 1,200 to 2,500 THB Rs 3,400 to Rs 7,100 See resorts guide

Want the trip handled end to end instead of booked piece by piece? Our Krabi travel packages fold Koh Lanta into a wider itinerary with transfers, stays and island trips sorted, and you can compare where to stay in Koh Lanta before you decide.

Fit Koh Lanta into your Krabi plan

Koh Lanta is the part of Krabi you go to when you want to stay a while rather than tick off a day-boat. Pick a beach, rent a scooter, book one island-hopping trip, and leave a slow afternoon for the Old Town and the national park. Pair it with Ao Nang and Railay earlier in your trip, browse the rest of the places to visit in Krabi, and when you are ready to put it all together our Krabi travel guide ties the islands, beaches and logistics into one plan.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Get your answers — before you plan your trip.

    Krabi Travel FAQs

    Is Koh Lanta worth visiting?

Yes, if you want a calmer, more spread-out island than Phi Phi or Ao Nang. Koh Lanta trades nightlife and day-boat crowds for long west-coast beaches, easy scooter exploring, strong diving and a slow Old Town. It suits families, couples and divers more than party travellers. Give it at least three nights.

How many days do you need in Koh Lanta?

Plan for 3 to 5 nights. That gives you time to settle on a beach, take one island-hopping day trip, drive down to Mu Ko Lanta National Park, and still have slow beach days. A single day only scratches the developed north and misses the quieter, more scenic south.

What is the best time to visit Koh Lanta?

November to April, the dry season, when seas are calm and every boat trip runs. December to February is the busy peak, so book ahead. From roughly May to October the monsoon brings rough water and many resorts, restaurants, dive shops and outer-island trips close for the low season.

How do you get to Koh Lanta from Krabi airport?

The usual way is a shared minivan, around two hours, which crosses to the island on one short car ferry now that the Siri Lanta bridge links the mainland to Koh Lanta Noi. In high season you can also take a passenger ferry or speedboat from Krabi, Ao Nang or Phi Phi. Book the transfer a day ahead in peak season.

Which is the best beach in Koh Lanta?

It depends on your trip. Klong Dao is best for families and first-timers, with calm water near the shops. Phra Ae, or Long Beach, has the widest choice of bars and budget stays. Klong Khong suits backpackers and sunsets, while Kantiang Bay in the south is the scenic, upmarket pick.

Do you need a scooter in Koh Lanta?

For most visitors, yes. Koh Lanta is a long, spread-out island and the beaches, Old Town and national park are far apart, with limited and pricey taxis. A rented scooter is how nearly everyone gets around. If you are not confident riding, base yourself near Klong Dao or Phra Ae where more is within walking distance.

What are the best day trips from Koh Lanta?

The 4 Islands tour with the Emerald Cave on Koh Muk is the classic, plus Koh Rok and Koh Haa for clear-water snorkelling and diving, all reachable by speedboat. Koh Phi Phi is also close enough for a long day trip. The southern marine parks are nearer from Lanta than from anywhere else in Krabi.

Is Koh Lanta good for snorkelling and diving?

It is one of the best dive bases in Krabi. Hin Daeng and Hin Muang, deep pinnacles south of the island, are among Thailand's top sites for manta rays and occasional whale sharks, while Koh Haa and Koh Rok offer easy, clear conditions for beginners and snorkellers. The big trips run reliably only in the dry season.

What is the entry fee for Mu Ko Lanta National Park?

There is a national park entry fee charged at the gate on the southern tip of the island, with a lower rate for children. It covers the lighthouse trail, the viewpoint and the small beach. For the current confirmed amount and the opening hours, check our Koh Lanta entry-fees and timings pages before you drive down.

Is Koh Lanta better than Koh Phi Phi?

They are different holidays. Phi Phi is smaller, livelier and busier, built for day-boats and nightlife. Koh Lanta is larger, quieter and spread across many beaches, better for a slow, self-drive stay with strong diving. If you want calm and space, choose Lanta. If you want the famous bays and buzz, choose Phi Phi. Many travellers do both, with Phi Phi as a day trip from Lanta.
