Snorkeling In Pattaya

Snorkeling in Pattaya

Enjoy a visit to the incredible Snorkeling in Pattaya

Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6533 reviews )

Snorkeling in Pattaya means one thing above all: a day trip out to Coral Island (Koh Larn) and the small islands around it, where shallow coral gardens sit a short speedboat ride from the beach. You do not need to dive, and you do not even need to swim well, because life jackets are provided and the best reefs are only a couple of metres down. A shared Coral Island day tour starts from around 600 Baht (Rs 1,710) with lunch and hotel pickup, and a dedicated snorkeling trip runs a bit more. November to April are the calmest and clearest months, and half the fun is the boat ride itself.

Snorkeling in Pattaya: Quick Takeaways

• The main snorkel venue is Coral Island (Koh Larn), about 7 km and a 15-minute speedboat ride from Pattaya; the public ferry from Bali Hai Pier takes about 45 minutes and costs around 30 Baht each way.

• Other good spots are Koh Sak, Koh Krok, Koh Phai (Bamboo Island) and Koh Rin, reached on full-day speedboat tours. Koh Samae San (Nemo Island) is further south inside a naval marine park, so access is permit-controlled and not on every commercial itinerary.

• A shared Coral Island day tour with lunch and transfers costs about 600 to 1,000 Baht (Rs 1,710 to 2,850); a dedicated snorkeling tour runs about 1,200 to 1,800 Baht, and a private speedboat charter about 2,500 to 4,000 Baht.

• Go November to April for calm seas and the best visibility; water stays warm at about 29 to 30 C all year.

• No swimming skill or certification needed. Life jackets are provided, so it suits families and complete beginners, unlike scuba diving.

Best Places to Snorkel in Pattaya

Almost every Pattaya snorkel trip is really an island trip, and the anchor is Coral Island (Koh Larn). A quick note that trips people up: Pattaya's Coral Island is Koh Larn, not Koh Hae. Koh Hae is Phuket's Coral Island, a different place a thousand kilometres away. Koh Larn sits about 7 km off the coast and has the easiest, most beginner-friendly coral of the group, which is why most half-day tours go straight there.

If you want quieter reefs or clearer water, the smaller islands nearby are worth the longer boat ride, and a full-day speedboat tour usually strings several together. Koh Sak and Koh Krok are calm, shallow and good for first-timers, with anemones and clownfish off the north side of Koh Krok. Koh Phai (Bamboo Island) and Koh Rin sit further out, so they get better visibility and healthier hard and soft coral. Koh Samae San, sometimes sold as Nemo Island, is the furthest south and clearest, but it sits inside the Royal Thai Navy marine park at Sattahip, so access is permit-controlled and seasonal and it is not on every Pattaya snorkel itinerary. Check that a tour actually runs there before you book it.

Snorkel spot Boat time from Pattaya Best for What you will see
Coral Island (Koh Larn) ~15 min speedboat, ~45 min ferry Beginners, families, half-day trips Shallow coral, parrotfish, angelfish
Koh Sak ~20 min Calm, shallow, first-timers Butterflyfish, anemones, easy reef
Koh Krok ~20 to 25 min Quieter reefs, fewer crowds Anemones, clownfish
Koh Phai (Bamboo Island) ~40 to 45 min Better visibility, day trips Hard coral, tropical fish
Koh Rin ~45 min Healthiest coral of the group Hard and soft coral, tropical fish
Koh Samae San (Nemo Island) ~1 hr south (naval park, permit only) Clearest water, when access is open Clownfish reefs, clear visibility

Best Time for Snorkeling in Pattaya

Snorkel in Pattaya between November and April, the dry season, when the Gulf of Thailand stays calm, boats run every day and the water is at its clearest. Visibility near Koh Larn is usually around 5 to 15 m and rises toward 20 m at the outer islands like Koh Rin and Koh Samae San, with November to February the clearest stretch. The water is warm all year, about 29 to 30 C, so you snorkel in just a swimsuit and rash guard. The green season from May to October still has plenty of good mornings, but afternoon storms churn up the sea and drop visibility, so book the earliest boat you can and keep a spare day in case the water is up. Whatever the month, the first boat out usually gets the flattest, clearest water.

How to Reach the Snorkeling Spots

Every trip leaves from Bali Hai Pier at the south end of Walking Street. You have two ways across to Coral Island (Koh Larn). The public ferry is the cheap, slow option: about 30 Baht each way and roughly 45 minutes, running to a fixed timetable. A speedboat is faster and more flexible at about 15 minutes each way, and it is what almost every organised snorkel tour uses, usually bundled with gear, lunch and hotel pickup. For the outer islands (Koh Sak, Koh Krok, Koh Rin, Koh Phai, Koh Samae San) a speedboat tour is the only practical choice, and the ride is 40 minutes to an hour each way.

If you are planning the crossing yourself, our Coral Island how to reach guide has the ferry timetable and pier details, and the Coral Island page covers the beaches and what else is on the island.

Snorkeling Tours and Prices in Pattaya

There are three ways to do it. The cheapest is a shared Coral Island day tour, where snorkeling is one stop among a few beach activities, with a group of 15 to 20 people, gear, lunch and hotel transfers included. A dedicated snorkeling tour costs more but spends the day at the reefs with a guide. A private speedboat charter costs the most and lets you pick the islands, the timing and how long you stay in the water, which is worth it for families or a group chasing the quiet outer reefs. Below are typical 2026 rates in both Baht and Rupees, because no rival page prices these trips in Rupees and that is the number an Indian traveller actually wants.

Option Who it is for Cost (Baht) Cost (Rupees, approx)
Public ferry to Koh Larn (each way) DIY, budget ~30 B ~Rs 85
Shared Coral Island day tour (lunch + transfer, snorkel stop) Families, budget 600 to 1,000 B Rs 1,710 to 2,850
Dedicated snorkeling speedboat tour (gear, guide, more reef time) Keen snorkelers 1,200 to 1,800 B Rs 3,420 to 5,130
Private speedboat charter (half day, pick your islands) Private groups 2,500 to 4,000 B Rs 7,125 to 11,400

Rupee figures use 1 Baht to about 2.85 Rupees (August 2026) and are a guide only. Booking sites sometimes run Coral Island day tours below the figures here, so it is worth comparing a few before you pay. Shared tours usually include a mask, snorkel and life jacket, lunch and hotel pickup; a dedicated snorkel tour spends more time in the water and less on other island activities. Confirm exactly what is bundled before you book, and expect the outer-island full-day trips to sit at the top of each range.

For the operator-by-operator fare breakdown, see the snorkeling entry fees tab.

Gear, Safety and What to Expect

The big reason snorkeling beats scuba diving for a family day out is simple: you do not need to swim or train for it. You float on the surface in a life jacket, breathe through a snorkel with your face in the water, and look down at the reef. Tour operators hand out a mask, snorkel and life jacket, and the good reefs off Koh Larn are only a couple of metres deep, so children and non-swimmers can join in. Basic comfort in water still helps you relax and enjoy it more.

A few practical things make the day better. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, because you spend hours face-down under a strong sun and your back burns fast, and a rash guard or T-shirt helps even more. If you wear glasses, ask about a prescription mask or expect a blur. Keep your phone in a waterproof pouch on the boat, do not touch or stand on the coral, and follow the guide on where the currents run at the outer islands. Underwater you can expect clouds of parrotfish, angelfish and butterflyfish over the coral, and clownfish in the anemones off Koh Krok. At the clearer outer reefs you may spot the occasional sea turtle.

Sample Half-Day and Full-Day Trips

A half-day trip is the easy choice if you just want to try snorkeling. A speedboat picks you up mid-morning, runs 15 minutes to Coral Island (Koh Larn), gives you a couple of stops on the shallow reefs with gear and a guide, adds a beach break with lunch, and has you back in Pattaya by mid-afternoon. It is the cheapest and most family-friendly way to do it.

A full day is better if you want the quieter, clearer reefs. The boat leaves earlier, skips past Koh Larn to the outer islands (Koh Sak, Koh Krok, then Koh Rin or Koh Phai), gives you three or four snorkel stops with more time in the water, a lunch stop on a beach, and gets you home by late afternoon. Book a morning start either way, because the sea and the visibility are both at their best before the afternoon wind picks up.

"Take the first speedboat of the day and start at Koh Sak before the tour crowds reach Koh Larn. The water is clearest in the morning, and you often get a reef to yourselves."

Plan Your Pattaya Trip

Snorkeling is best built into a full day on the water. Most trips run out to Coral Island (Koh Larn), so read up on the island first, and add scuba diving if anyone in your group wants to go deeper. Browse the wider things to do in Pattaya, and when you are ready to book, look at Bangkok Pattaya tour packages or the full range of Thailand tour packages.

Overall, we had a very good experience with our travel agent. The trip was planned well, all commitments were fulfilled as promised, and the coordination throughout the journey was smooth. The team was responsive, professional, and ensured that transfers, sightseeing, and bookings were arranged prop
erly, making the trip hassle-free. The only major disappointment was the hotel selected in Pattaya. The rooms were quite compact, we encountered cockroaches in the room, and the towels provided were not up to the expected standard. This part of the experience could have been much better. The itinerary was well designed overall; however, for some outdoor attractions, scheduling visits during the evening would have been preferable, especially during the summer season, to avoid the intense daytime heat and make sightseeing more comfortable. Despite these points, we appreciate the effort and support provided by the travel agent. The trip was enjoyable, and with a little more attention to hotel selection and timing of certain activities, the experience could have been excellent.

We recently booked an 11-day, 10-night land package to Thailand with Travtree Holidays, covering Bangkok, Phuket, and Krabi. Traveling with a 2-year-old can be challenging, but the overall experience was smooth and well-coordinated. Our itinerary was packed with great activities. In Bangkok, Safa
ri World was a huge hit with our little one, and the temple tours were beautiful. The Krabi leg was fantastic—the 7 Island Tour and the Jungle Tour were standouts. In Phuket, the Phi Phi Island tour and the Old City tour were both well-managed and enjoyable. Since we only opted for the land package and airport transfers, we relied heavily on their punctuality. The transfers were seamless, which is a massive relief when you’re hauling luggage and a toddler! The only disappointment was the Elephant Sanctuary tour. It felt very rushed, lasting only about an hour and a half, which didn't quite meet our expectations compared to the quality of the other excursions. Overall, we had a wonderful family holiday. Travtree Holidays provided great service and reliable transport. Highly recommended for families looking for a well-organized Thailand experience!

We recently booked our family trip to Thailand with Travtree Holidays, and it turned out to be an absolutely wonderful experience from start to finish. The entire itinerary was very well organized, making the trip smooth and stress-free—especially important when traveling with young children (our ki
ds are 2 and 5 years old). All pick-ups were perfectly on time, and the vehicles provided were clean, comfortable, and spacious, which made commuting easy and relaxing for the whole family. The hotels arranged for us were excellent—family-friendly, comfortable, and conveniently located. Everything was thoughtfully planned, allowing us to enjoy each destination without any hassle. A special mention goes to our visits to Siam Ocean World (sea life) and Safari World & Marine Park. Both experiences were incredibly impressive and became the highlight of our trip. Siam Water World was fantastic for the kids, with exciting views of the sea creatures penguins etc that they thoroughly enjoyed. Safari World was equally amazing—the safari drive and shows were captivating, and seeing the animals up close was a memorable experience for both adults and children. Overall, Travtree Holidays ensured a seamless, enjoyable, and perfectly managed vacation for our family. We truly appreciate their professionalism and attention to detail and would highly recommend them to anyone planning a trip to Thailand—especially families traveling with young kids.

    Pattaya Travel FAQs

Where is the best place to snorkel in Pattaya?

Coral Island (Koh Larn) is the main and most beginner-friendly spot, about 7 km and a 15-minute speedboat ride from Pattaya, with shallow coral gardens close to the beach. For clearer water and quieter reefs, full-day speedboat tours also visit Koh Sak, Koh Krok, Koh Rin and Koh Phai (Bamboo Island). Koh Samae San (Nemo Island) is clearer still but sits in a naval marine park with permit-controlled access, so it is not on every itinerary. A quick correction you will see elsewhere: Pattaya's Coral Island is Koh Larn, not Koh Hae, which is Phuket's.

Which Pattaya islands are best for beginner snorkelers?

Start at Coral Island (Koh Larn). Its reefs are shallow, calm and close to the beach, and it is a short 15-minute speedboat ride, so it suits first-timers, families and children. Koh Sak and Koh Krok are the next easiest, also shallow and sheltered, and often added on the same trip. Leave the further, more open outer reefs for once you are comfortable in the water. Life jackets are provided everywhere, so you do not need to be a strong swimmer.

What is the best time for snorkeling in Pattaya?

November to April, the dry season, is best. The Gulf of Thailand stays calm, boats run daily, and the water is clearest, with visibility around 5 to 15 m near Koh Larn and up to about 20 m at the outer islands, sharpest from November to February. Water is warm all year at about 29 to 30 C. The May to October green season still has good mornings, but afternoon storms cut visibility, so book the earliest boat.

How much does snorkeling in Pattaya cost?

A shared Coral Island day tour with gear, lunch and hotel transfers costs about 600 to 1,000 Baht (Rs 1,710 to 2,850) per person, with snorkeling as one stop among a few beach activities. A dedicated snorkeling tour that spends the day at the reefs runs about 1,200 to 1,800 Baht (Rs 3,420 to 5,130). A private speedboat charter is about 2,500 to 4,000 Baht. If you go it alone, the public ferry to Koh Larn is only about 30 Baht each way, but you supply your own gear. Booking sites sometimes run day tours cheaper, so compare a few.

Do I need to know how to swim to snorkel in Pattaya?

No. Tour operators provide a life jacket, so you float on the surface without needing to swim, and the best reefs off Koh Larn are only a couple of metres deep. This is the main reason snorkeling suits families, children and complete beginners, while scuba diving needs training. Basic comfort in the water still helps you relax and enjoy it more.

Do I need to bring my own snorkeling gear?

Not for an organised tour. A mask, snorkel and life jacket are included with almost every shared or private trip, along with lunch and hotel pickup. Many people still bring their own mask for a better fit and their own reef-safe sunscreen and rash guard. If you take the public ferry across on your own, you will need to rent or bring gear yourself.

How do I get to Coral Island (Koh Larn) to snorkel?

Trips leave from Bali Hai Pier at the south end of Walking Street. The public ferry takes about 45 minutes and costs around 30 Baht each way, while a speedboat takes about 15 minutes and is what most snorkel tours use, bundled with gear and lunch. The outer islands are only reachable by a speedboat tour, roughly 40 minutes to an hour each way.

Is snorkeling in Pattaya safe, and is it good for kids?

Yes, when you go with a proper operator. Life jackets are provided, the beginner reefs are shallow, and guides brief you before you get in, so it suits children and non-swimmers. Wear reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard against the sun, keep off the coral, and follow the guide on currents at the outer islands. Anyone with a serious medical condition should check with a doctor first.
